Please Explain

I have several questions about these mods. Background: I have three PBEM games going at this moment, all are straight stock scenarios (Campaigns 41x2, 42). I am also pretty much a noob having only got into this game around January 06.
Mod Questions: I am generaly confused about what mod to try or what to do. I want the most accurate simulation possible. I have CHS (not installed) and NikMod not installed. I like the historical accuracy of correct units and equipment with CHS, and I also like the game changes that the Nik Mod does. What is the general felling out there about these two mods and is there a mod that combines them into one, is one better than the other? Also what map are people using out there. I now have Andrew's map, is that the standard?

A number of people are working hard at correcting problems of two classes:

1) Actual data errors. These abound - time is money and Matrix did not do a lot of research - and it would take man-mallenia to get it all right. Further, lack of clear definitions mean much work done was not to uniform standards. Further, SOME volunteers sneek in their own pet data, sometimes because they believe the reference books are wrong, sometimes - who knows why?

2) Structural errors. Sometimes these can be mitigated by things modders can do.

In a couple of weeks, a family of new material will be released - called CHS (177 as far as I know) and RHS (no official number assigned yet).
These are related - and offer the player some options. RHS is built on top of CHS - so both have a revised Japanese army, for example. CHS was going to have new airplanes for the Japanese - but in the end didn't adopt them - so that caused RHS to be born. RHS reworked allied planes as well - adding capacilities not in other versions (e.g. there are no heavy transports, no gliders, no submarine bombers, etc). Both sets will have a Soviet Navy - but CHS kept all the millions of little ships and RHS will try to give all the Soviet warships at the expense of something (not yet decided). On the other hand, a team is working on the Soviet Army - and it is unlikely there is room to put those changes in RHS - so while the Soviet Army is reformed - it is going to be more reformed in CHS. The air force may be different - it is a question of time - and not clear yet.
But I have added a Soviet NAVY Air Force which will not, as far as I know, be in CHS. Oh - yes - "aircraft" above includes air unit reforms.
There were oddles of problems - fictional B-17s and not enough B-24s - you name it. This is hardly a comprehensive list.

Bottom line: there will be many more choices in a short time - based on significant research and testing. CHS (new release) lets you have Shinano BOTH as a carrier AND as a battleship. RHS lets you have it either way (pick CVO or BBO versions) - with many similar tradeoffs (CVO is carrier oriented, BBO is battleship oriented) - based on wholly different building programs: CVO is the one actually implemented, modified for early battles; BBO is the one actually planned without modification early enough to affect late war ships. Then there is PPO - you get lots of political points to assign troops where you want them. Usually CHS releases a version for the day after Pearl Harbor at about the same time as the main release. CHS tries to stay "stable" between releases - over long periods. RHS will try to update regularly - if a datum is corrected the files will update every few days. Pick your prefrence.
