What's Wrong with this Picture?

Post by barbarrossa »

I'll jump on the "what is it?" bandwagon.
I was in Turret 2 during this shoot -- actually filling the role of turret officer before they wised up and put a real 0 in there.

So, what's wrong with this picture?[;)]

We don't have the matching downrange photo of those "bricks" arriving?

Nope.

But everyone should see what a HC 16" .50 round looks like through a turret rangefinder when it hits the beach [:D].

Actually, there's something on the ship that's not quite right.

This is actually the big promo pic from from our first shoot.

Looks like a French or Dutch flag below the port side crossbar of the mast.

That's the red pennant telling other ships that we are conducting live fire from the port side.

French?! Perish the thought mon ami![:D]

My cousin Tim was on the New Jersey..He told me it is very dangerous to be on the deck when the big guns are firing.
Looks like people are out there??

The rule at the time I was aboard was O-5 level and above you could be out on the weather deck to watch.

I think they relaxed that during Desert Storm because I've seen pictures with knuckleheads in the foreground during shoots.

This may be too hard a "what is it", but I'll leave it up a while and see if someone can get it.[:)]

It looks like the anchors aren't symmetric? Perhaps someone forgot to put enough duct tape on one?

This ship is level? Shouldn't it be listing at least a little with multiple barrels firing at once like that? For that matter did they ever fire all those barrels at once?

Actually, it seems to be listing a little bit into the direction of fire.

Hmm, interesting... I was going to attach this picture below to show another full broadside, but it seems the NJ is only firing six out of nine barrels here?

IIRC, the Navy stopped firing all of the guns at the same instant in a broadside, and timed them to all fire within a very short time, something like within a second or two. It puts less stress on the ships framing than firing everything at once.

The first turret doesn't seem to have the directors on it? Or whatever those nice boxes on the sides are at the back end fo the turret.

The focsle seems too short, even allowing for the foreshortening effect of the angle of view... May just be an optical illusion.
