IS 2 Sneer vs Andy Mac

Post by Sneer »

I decided to play this mod to check new set of toys - 42y in PBEM starts boring to me after I found my holy Graal

about mod and changes in toys and strategy

there is little choice given by mod designer - if sb wants to take malaya and DEI - and we all know it is necessary - UK fleet need to be dealt with
LBA is much more powerful in this mod so Death star tactics is no longer available against well prepared defence

malaya need to be taken fast - with 400+ planes ready for allies and so powerful fleet - you can't destroy everything - there should be no problem with rather very long and tough defence - there are strong and experienced troops -lot of planes and terrain is generally good for defence - Alor Star is difficult task for Japan

you can't go for DEI without eliminating singapore in this game so you need to do it right- kick -knock out - bring down and finish - otherwise you will fail in reaching oilfields

My favourite strike axis - via Mersing must be abandoned- singapore is too strong - i can't cut enemy in half - it is impossible unfortunatelly due to number of allied planes - attrition fight is bad in any situation and especially in this mod - there is only 3mil supply available - almost 600k less than in stock game - so no industry rebuilding in first half of war - lots of bases in china is very low on supply - also many land units need reinforcements. there is no way i could activate china in 42. also troop deployment is difficult - 33rd Inf div from Burma command is in Shanghai and needs to be transported to fights area
i may be wrong but there is much less base forces available to strenghten pacific atolls chain

looks like I will have to put faith in 2e naval bombers which are lethal in this mod as cap can no longer stop them all
in my postponed game against Raver 50 zeros and 120 naval bombers were almost slaughtered by 200+ cap - in this mod I would expect about80 bombers to go through and attack ships -imagine what 80 highly experienced nells can do with BBs

i have bad feelings about this game - Malayas and PI needs very high force concentration - too high to play it safe.
on the other hand if I manage to eliminate UK carriers early I will keep advantage in carriers much longer than in stock game.

Game seems to be well balanced at first glance but i fear lot of will be revealed later.
there are much more battlewagons in game so there should be more naval engagements.

Ships :
basic Japan CV is slightly stronger than in stock version - 8 to start with
basic CVL is similar to Shoho class - 4 to start with
Battlewagons - lighter armament than in stock version but they are also faster
CA - similar stats but much lower endurance - bad as they were my usual escort for CVs
CL- revolution -10DP 5" guns on each - now player now how to use them
DD - did not check by now

overall AA armament is about twice like in stock version - but also average durability of planes increased

planes - i have 50+ 4e bombers capable of carring 4 500kg AP bombs /10 hexes normal range - they would be great to attack singapore harbour but range is too low
more zero fighters available at start
oscars seem to be capable of fighting against hurricanes

i'll try to post more in the evening

reassuming
there should be a need to make sth about UK fleet to move against US
I'm slightly worried about 3 fast dutch BC and 2 UK BC off Singapore as even best strike on Singapore harbour will leave enemy at least 5 BC - even 6 if New Zeland counted +slow BB in Colombo+ numerous cruisers
US fleet will be carriers - 5 and 10+ BB + 3 BC + also numerous cruisers
if allied will want to attack fast and hard they have more than enough ships
Andy Mac eggagerates about about how devastating will be initial strike
i have no chance of breaking offensive power of UK fleet but only secure initial landings on Malaya
there is even no single chance of damaging every cruised in Singapore - not counting DDs - and remember that 250kg bombs of Vals will be useless against heavy ships so only 200 kates matters -
My heavy 4e bombers would be great here but there is no way for them to go with full load and reduced is not worth effort

.... i've got first turn from andy so rest soon....

Hey Sneer - I'll definitely be watching this thread - hopefully learning from it as we go!

I think your biggest worry is the carriers. If you can sink them then all he has are the BCs to use against you and those can be kept away by Kates and Nells..

The 4E bombers are useful although they do consume a lot of engines. Be warned they're a bit weaker than the B-17..

So I guess to sum up, if you can sink the CVs, then you should be able to make landings in Malaya at Kota Bharu without much fear. Look out for the Beauforts though.

initial strike

Post by Sneer »

i'm highly disappointed with Singapore result - only 1 of 10 kate groups run with torpedos
Lady's luck bless to Andy - he will probably run drunk when he sees results
only Ark Royal and Hermes sunk instantly
Formidable got 40 bombs - like many other ships but lethality of 800kg bombs is very low comparing to torps - lack of nells in port attack is visible and if was allowed all major ships wpuld be sunk today - instead of this I had to use them on airfield attack
all important ships as well as 3 CAs on fire and heavy damaged - probably most of them in 80's and 90 's but with little float dmg - simulations showed as Andy pointed 4-5 capitals sunk and I have never seen so weak strike - good point that airfield is heavily damaged and lot of fighters were destroyed on ground so I can repeat strike - enemy bombers were dispersed so on one hand I didn't managed to kill them on the ground but they were unable to strike back hard -

secondary strike on Manila - average results with few Subs sunk and many heavy damaged- there are so many sips there that i don't even try to strike all of them

landings went smoothly - major at Lingayen and Khota baru - both ap 100k+ troops
with secondary locations at Appari , Kuantan and tertiary on whole northern Borneo and rest of philipine outer ports

Wake was taken as expected - i'll try to block enemy here and on marshalls using large numbers of nells - i think he can only use 3 CV within first 2-3 weeks so cap will not be adequate in this mod
also reinforcements will go to the region - my 2 cvls from PI + 2 CVE should offset at leat 1 carrier backed by heavy ships -also 1 big shanghai division is directed to the area
rabual should fall before andy's ship will reach area

overall evaluation of 1st tyrn is bad - i intended to instantly sweep Java with carriers and now I need to repeat strike
probably I will send only kates with cover and vals will stay on naval attack - I expect Andy to use cruisers against kuantan in the night -
I have 2 TF with 4BB each covering place but Andy has 60+ torpedo planes in the area so they can't stay close - also their ammo level is low

I assume i need 3 days to be on shores so there are 2 critical days left only - I estimate i can loose 10+ transports but there is a chance I will cut off alor star / georgetown area from Singapore - otherwise Andy will be forced to withdraw immiedietaly to singapore and with most of malaya taken I would be able to close port and airfield

troops dislocation on malaya
Alor star 2 inf div + support 1000+AP
khota baru 3 inf div + support 1500+AP
kuantan half of inf div + 1 inf bde + marines equivalent of full inf div 800+AP
there is also 150 LB and similar amount of DB in the area as well as 80 nells will be left here

PI

lingayen 3-4 inf div + support < i don't remember correctly>
appari BDE
legaspi - marines - i expect i will send BDE from davao in 6-7 days
half inf div is PI reserve and if initial offensive will be working well it will be send to malaya

Look out for the Beauforts though.

carriers can't stay here - they are needed in pacific- otherwise i loose marshals - lack of one day due to dissappointing 1st strike is painful

greetings...

probably is my fault, but what's the point of this mod if British navy is reinforced only to give Japanese more VP?

(don't get me wrong Alikchi, i really appreciate your work and effort, it is certainly intersting "what if" scenario, but with strike on Singapore like Sneer did it, my question seems logical to me..)

with much bigger airforce in malaya (4 hurris and 2 spitfires sqn) and with 3 CV British could feel safe in singapore. so it is logical that lot of heavy ships would be stationed there - colombo is too far away

force deployment make singapore attack a must
you can't leave 3 CV and 9(4 in singapore +3 dutch +2 out of harbour) battlewagons + hoards of cruisers alone if you want to do any invasion close to area.

there is no way to eliminate UK/dutch fleet out of game in 1st day or even 1st week
and you need to remember US is almost ready to action at your backs

No worries, it's still a beta, so all the criticism I get helps me :)

I think I may release two Iron Storm scenarios - one default, and one modified slightly for a "KB strikes Singapore" scenario. With the subs around Pearl now moved to Southeast Asia, and with the British better prepared (they probably would have detected the KB coming in, the South China Sea is a VERY well traveled sealane, unlike KB's route against Pearl Harbor).

I agree with what Sneer says, the balance is pretty tough as it is already for Japan. The heavy ships should, logically, be stationed in Singapore. Probably they should be better defended though.

I will be doing some research to see just how likely British detection of a KB strike on Singapore would have been. If the KB attacks Singapore, there should be penalties, so the balance isn't wrecked, because the KB couldn't have "snuck up" to Singapore like they did in reality to Pearl Harbor. The US fleet is a big penalty obviously but I will probably be implementing Sneer and Andy Mac's suggestions in this alternate scenario.

I hadn't thought about a KB strike on Singapore when I made the scenario, so this is a learning experience for me. This is only the second time a KB attack on Singapore in my mod has been made.. gotta do more testing to find out what the balance really is! I'll keep observing these games to see how it all works out..

BTW, not about the scenario, but that was a really impressive first strike Sneer, I don't think I've seen anything more destructive [X(]

Greetings Sneer:

I'm pleased you have elected to also open your own thread about this encounter with Andy Mac in Alikchi's new scenario.

From the many AARs I've read, you are among the most competent of the Japanese players, and I haven't yet seen your equal in both aggression and organization. As always, I appreciate your matter-of-fact assessments. It should be a first-rate match.

Alikchi has done an excellent job in creating this scenario. Although it doesn't hold much interest for me as a 'what-if', I'm glad you've decided to have a go at it.

Good hunting!

probably is my fault, but what's the point of this mod if British navy is reinforced only to give Japanese more VP?

I think Admiral Laurent strike on Hawaii isl is far more aggressive and i think this scenario is tougher for Japan than anybody think so my reputation can be little lowered[;)]
Also it will be extremaly difficult to be aggressive in this game as there is less supply available - in stock version mistake margin in industry rebuilding is very low
in this game ....
there is no industry rebuilding except ...
1.you need to build more nakajimas
2.you need more zeros and oscar - i convert nates as there is plenty of them storaged - funny thing - PDU is on and will use nates for so long
3 a bit more armament/vehicles is needed - many units are understrenght - many tank units are almost half strenght

Main problem of this game is Andy - he made bold movement against marshalls playing against Pauk and I'm sure he will gamble against Wake or even Kwajelain - they are weak at the moment
i can little here - within 4-5 turns 3 daitais of nells will be send there and probably 1 zero group - also in 2 days base force should start building up eniwotek as major support base for Wake
naval forces should consists of 2CVL 2CVE old BB and few cruisers so if 1-2CV only will be spotted i will go to play

i need 2 weeks to bring carriers there what is a bit long - i estimate Andy needs only 10 days - that's why I'm so unhappy about need of repeating carrier strike on port- in normal games i'd use nells in 1st turn and 2nd and job would be finished
Andy wrote he wants to surprise me this turn ... we will see
this turn I should take both Khota baru and Kuantan and as I have aviation regiments there there will lots of planes there soon - including DB at kuantan and nells in khota baru so it would be wise for him to run

there is enough cruisers and DDs to try hunt my CV at night - i'd be happy if he tries as game mechanics is against such hunts:
1. you need to hit hex exactly - i think more difficult than IRL - i'm only 120 miles east
2. even if he catches CV they can be targetd only during 1st phase of combat - difficult to hit in so short time usually at longest range - in 2nd round they dissappear and my 2BB escort can play

2nd turn will most bloody to my transports - i don't have spare cap to secure them - if i want to strike Sing once more
on 3rd they should have their own cover from captured bases

no - i had no choice - i thought about detaching 3-4 CV to cover pacific and finishing sing with nells - but Andy insisted on baning nells from port attack
that's why all carriers are needed in DEI

but ...
1 inf div is on its way to reinforce area and inf bde is available within 2 months - i also hope I can finish Pi in 1 month so if 1 inf div lands on wake I will wipe it out with my 7 big units and whole combined fleet- i doubt any andy landings can be stronger in 41
minelayers area in the area
carriers should move fast as i have replenishment TF all the way from dei to wake/marshalls

all who saw wake pictures would be amazed with 150k+ of Jap forces invading

Greetings...

I would do same what Sneer did it.... Actually I'm planing to attack Singapore in stock scenario on turn 1 (due total inability to achive historical results at PH) in my future PBEM games...

I just tried to jump in Allied boots...

Thanks for response guys....[:)]

Thanks Alikchi, that is exactly what i thought....

day 2

Post by Sneer »

day 2 - i'm not pleased - looks like BB floating was low as I expected and they were put out of the harbour - i had to divide attack planes on both port and naval but carrier based planes due to abundance of target missed them - only rodney was hit once by nell bomber
as expected day 2 was most difficult in terms of enemy torpedo bombers - tomorrow will be difficult too and 4th should be a relief
50k troops already unloaded at Kuantan
110k at khota baru and 100k at Lingayen
davao and cagayen will be attacked tomorrow - with good luck mindanao will be fully captured
appari and legaspi will provide cap for lingayen

enemy cruiser noticed on their way to johnson Isl

3 nells and 1 zero group as declared during transfer - currently at saipan - cve and 2 cvl full speed headind Kwal

i decided to split KB - 6 CV will make fast sweep and moves to kwal area
small KB 2CV &2CVL will help hunt in singapore area
it is a huge risk with this cap model but looks like US machine is on and I have no choice

brrr looks like I'm a bit dizzy
i noticed -now - that BBs were torpedoed today - change in plans - both CV groups will go to soerabaja -port should be empty but maybe there will be other target fleeing - on day 4 or 5th they will divide and smaller group will hunt in the area and bigger will sprint to kwal

i noticed dutch planes in singapore and AVG - looks like Andy wants me to stay and be hit due to leaking cap - no chance - if java is weaker let's go to Java :-) maybe I will hunt enemy BCs ?

task of finishing enemy fleet is given to airforce - tomorrow all planes put on naval attack
2 nells sqn put in singora - in this mod they have only 12 normal range

my bet Andy will go after wake to relief pressure but any troops landed there so early will be lost as I wrote earlier - i doubt if he puts anything on gilberts and doubt if he dares to go against kwal - however it would be nice - i should have 120 nells there tomorrow and 300 AP behind lvl 5 fort

no i bet it will be wake

day 3

Post by Sneer »

Kuantan not taken - should fall this turn - cap over lingayen and khota baru - i estimate i'll loose nor more than next 10 ships till the end of landing season - so i should finish with less than 20 transport killed- not bad for such operation
120 nells and 60 zeros at Kwal [8D] i'm waiting for enemy TF - last report enemy fleet near Johnson
Alikchi - i love you!!!! - i found southern are inf division in both tientsin and kanazawa - it means that within less than 1 month i will have 3-4 inf div ready to counterattack any Andy's landing in pacific - if not i can direct them to PNG fast- and with carrier superiority he will be unable to reinforce
that will be really good - after reading Andy's AAR against Pauk i know that he will land somewhere - he will not wait - every allied player i know after having his toys broken wants to go with counterattack what means opportunity of breaking more his toys[:D]
enemy retreats from alor star - looks like Andy wants to retreat all troops to Singapore - i don't even want to imagine my losses when etering this hex
almost all allied airforce in singapore -reports of 150 fighters and 150 bombers - why should I be so stupid to play there with carriers ?? - with nells at khota baru and singora + kuching and later DBs at mersing and johore all his navy movement will be cut off - sallys in meanwhile should burn enemy supplies
KB splitted -6Cv started sprint to Kwal -should be at Kendari tomorrow - smaller part will hunt at batavia - this should make Andy rethinking and redeploying planes - even if is risky

in 7 days I should have at kwal region 6CV 2 CVL 2CVE 5 BB + screen - in 10 days inf div should appear at marcus area
tomorrow strong base forces will land at eniwotek and marcus

looks like 2 Pi reserve div +2 suppot unit are cut of at san fernando :-) i will deal with them in next few days - looks like Luzon will not have many units to defend - if Andy makes mistake and will try to fortify both Manila and clark in same time - and I bet he does both places will be too weak to stop me

72 nells at cagayen + 27 at palau + 27lilys at legaspi should cut retreat path from PI

there is one problem - there are too many allied ships in this scenario - i can imagine hunting them all

btw again I managed to kill most allied mining abilities :-)
as well as both dutch AR heading to Sing
