Pink subs are the problem

Post by Ron Saueracker »

After nearly ten months of constant combat the 22nd Australian Brigade has boarded the Montoro TF and is heading for Australia for some well deserved R&R. The 13th Australian Brigade is now in the line. The 27th Australian Brigade, having seen almost as much combat, is in much better shape and will remain in Java until relief can be brought in.

While no official statement has been made on this I'm assuming something is being done to rectify the exceedingly high air/sub spotting results. Some say if this is done (perhaps limit subs being spotted by air to a maximum of once per air phase or lowering the chance of sub detection by aircraft drastically) subs need to suffer a lower chance of intercepting enemy TFs (because it would assume the sub has submerged). I disagree based on the abstract nature of the model and how it limits subs to one target per attack, does not give subs a chance to fire a defensive torpedo shot, does not allow subs to follow/track/shadow a target if slow enough (only on auto sub ops but auto sub ops is flawed in my opinion) and does not allow sub vs sub attacks. With this many limitations currently hindering subs, further hinderances due to being submerged are redundant.

As for some folks concerned over inability of surface vessels to sink subs, this is adjustable by increasing the number of charges dropped per DC rack in the editor now that the surface ASW is workable.

Bill back in Batavia

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Once again, now that Bill and I have finished pumping the neighbors cat waiting while the land combat issues were cleared up, Batavia is under seige. Because of the break we had to take to sort the movement morass and in the spirit of the game I turned off the build fortifications feature for Batavia. I activated it two turns ago and the completion of a fort level one survuived one whole day! LOL. We are back where we were a week or so ago but with slightly rested units. The units I had pissing around in the jungle are a complete mess.

RE: Bill back in Batavia

Post by Ron Saueracker »

I'm really wondering how Bill's logistical situation is impacting his operations? Not having the DEI and Burma must be catastrophic to the economy. I expect an all out push of some sort in the DEI but the loss of all those APs must be complicating the heck out of it.[;)]

Too good to last...more sync issues.

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Well, too good to be true. A week of no sync issues was great and now I'm spoiled by how the game is supposed to work. Because of this, I'm deflated yet again as the sync issue ruins the thrill of the game for the Allied play.

Couple this with the air search model crap. Since I spend the majority of my time waiting for endless BS "sub spotted" messages to cease one would think that a massive carrier TF would show up. Of course not, at least not until it is 4 hexes from Colombo!!! Man they have to get the sub crap fixed...I'm OK with not seeing the Jap CVs but the sub silliness is infuriating, especially when the combat replay is totally bogus due to sync problems.

Bill says he was pretty bummed about the lack of shipping targets in Colombo. I don't blame him! Pretty sparse to say the least. I'm pretty bummed about my bombers "voting" to not launch for what, the upteenth time now? Makes no sense. Complete misrepresentation of military procedure. This CAP check, morale check and further restrictive launch checks for Allied aircraew is way off the mark. One does not get too many opportunities to strike back with reasonble expectations of doing damage to enemy CVs this far from the safety of a base. Oh well, at least the Japanese lost a whack of aircraft.

The overhauls on many submarines are continuing and Tarpon's (my favourite submarine) is completed. New SJ radar, AA and extra bow tubes all should help her get out of the hole she has dug for herself in the game...three patrols, no ships sunk or damaged with herself being damaged by the endless hordes of air attacks the current air search model instigates. I even changed her skipper, promoting "Moon" Chapple from S-38, despite the fact that the entire leader database is a useless mess. There is no way to tell if a leader is currently employed or is available because the UI is abominable and there is no limit to how many billets a leader can fill (I've heard some gamey buggers have all their surface combat TFs commanded by Raizo Tanaka!![8|]). In my mind spending how many hours trying to fix a leader bug fully knowing that the database is hosed anyway is a waste. Better to have just eliminated the individuality of leaders, given them all 50 ratings and let random die rolls add variance.

I disagree with your conclusion here Ron:

I am playing two Nik mod 5.02 using 1.795 and I "feel" that subs are able to get shots off a little too easily now and if you decrease the spotting, then they will be sinking ships every day. The real problem is that we will have to wait and see, and if there is a problem, it will be quite a while before it can be fixes.

Of course you disagree, you're from Negativity.[;)] I'd like to know just how seriously a high DL limits a sub's ability to attack. I think it is very severe from what I've seen in my game thus far. At any rate the sub sightings have to drop drastically. Main thing once this is done is to get the DC racks dropping enough charges per attack, right now they only drop one per attack when really they should be dropping at least three per rack. This can be accomplished with the editor thankfully. Aside from the air spotting, how do you feel about the new ASW? I think Mike Wood did a wonderful job on it.
