NEW SCENARIO FOR HTTR!

Post by simovitch »

"In front of the Ourthe"

Best played as GERMAN player.

December 20th - 22nd 1944.

General Krueger's LVIII Panzerkorps was finally making progress after suffering a series of setbacks east of the Our River on December 16th and 17th.

After re-assembling the 560th Volksgrenadier and the 116th Panzer division on the 18th, he ran his panzerkorps virtually unopposed for 20 km through Houffalize and on to the Ourthe River south of La Roche. After learning that the bridges over the Ourthe may not be able to hold his tanks, he turned his korps 180 degrees and countermarched back through Houffalize and then turned northeast toward the more promising crossing point at Hotton.

At the same time, elements of CCR, 3rd Armored were assembling in the Hotton area with orders to advance in the direction of Marcouray and Samree and make contact with the enemy.

Fully playtested - should be a challange to German player. Has options to favor either side.

Until El Savior gets it posted on his site, I can send you the files if you email me. You will have to build the map cache yourself if you desire such. Make sure you send me your actual email address with your request.

Yes, I've done a few ardennes mods for CMAK, as well as a few ETO-Ardennes scenarios that are available on the new CM Scenario depot. I'm a little burned out now from CM (after 3 years steady on)which allows me to concentrate on the Airborne Assault series. I've been drafted into the Data Design Team for the upcoming "Battles from the Bulge" series.[8D]

I'd like to think of this scenario for HttR as a resume for the BFTB DDT.[:D]

I tested the scenario yesterday. I must say that I was enjoying it very much!

Damn roads are in poor condition, German forces are tired and heavy forest will slow my advance. To make it even worse, enemy has blown the only bridge over Orthne. My engineers are on the way, but enemy is trying to recapture Hotton and Soy. This is a challenge. [8D]

Today I will play scenario to the end and I'll find out is my hook-action going to succeed. My poor forces have marched whole day and night... Probably they are not in the condition to fight until rested. [:(]

Excellent works Simovitch!

Got a decisive yesterday, but only thanks to a mistake made by the AI and the scenario end which came in a very timely manner. Still what a challenge!
Thanks Simovitch!

As I mostly played the "official" scenarios it is difficult to appreciate how tough it is to get from A to B this is why I used the wonderful map pattern of El Savior.

kind of spoiler follows so you may want to stop reading here.

Cheers,

RedDevil

My suggestions:
The only way to get these guys to Hotton on time is road column formation, quickest route, fingers crossed [:D].
Make the most of the few mech units
You should really try as hard as possible to have some engineers working on the Hotton Bridge on the night between day 2 and day 3. They get entrenced very quickly and with some suppression they may un-prime it before the attack starts.
Add many waypoints particularly when getting in position for attacking the bridge. In an previous attempt one of my mech infantry units decided it was a good idea to use the road next to the Hotton bridge to move towards the village to the NE of Hotton with not very nice consequences for the bridge...

In a strange way I like it when this happens. I'm quite sure many Generals have been cursing their subordinates due to catastrophic errors and dumb manoeuvres.

Indeed. And thanks to plainfully realistic command delay there is no way you can undo it. [:D]

I love this game!

Actually thinking about it the problem was not the path, but rather the "reattach" button.

The Bn was in position and (silly me) I decided it was a good idea to re-attach one unit who very cleverly decided that the fastest way to rejoin the bn was taking south bank road through the Hotton village...

I guess the only way to avoid this mistakes is to make sure that you reattach a unit only when it is very close to the HQ.

Just wait until you play the scenarios in BFTB with the slope effects developed in COTA. I am playtesting some of the BFTB beta scenarios and the frustrations that the combatants experienced fighting in the ardennes terrain is well represented.

You will now have to take into account the countouring of the land (which will be very geographically-historically accurate of course) to plan your advance. Add to that the expanded weather options and traffic congestion algorithms and you will really begin to feel the challenges that the germans felt trying to meet their timetable.

well, the operative word here is beta. There are powers at work far beyond my humble existence that will decide what stays, what goes, and what is really planned for implementation. I will leave it to them to make any "official" progress reports[;)].
