Help needed with a wif naval counter

Post by terje439 »

While trying to write a few lines on each naval counter included in WiF, I have run into
a problem, and I am hoping someone here might help me out.
The problem is as follows:

One of the US naval units, the USS Forrestal has printed a build year of 1944 on it. When browsing the web however, the only USS Forrestal I find is the USS Forrestal launched in 1954. So does anyone know if they are indeed intended to be the same ship?

I find no Forrestal among the carriers cancelled at the end of WWII. But I don't have access to my complete lists (or to my link list). What class would this one belong to going by the stats? Probably not an Essex, unless it was an intermediary name.

I just checked whom the ship was named after. James V. Forrestal only died in 1949, so a WWII ship would not have been named after him. So this is certainly a fictional unit. Reading up some more saying that the Forestal was the first super carrier built for jet fighters, I would assume this counter is indeed supposing an earlier development of that type of ship (not very likely in my book). So the choice of the name was a bit unlucky for WiF (I assume it's AiF, I did not check my counters).

essex
Attack: 2 Anti-air: 3
Defend: 5 Bombardment: 0
Movement: 6 Air capacity: 5
Range: 6 Air class: 5

Ticonderoga
Attack: 2 Anti-air: 4
Defend: 5 Bombardment: 0
Movement: 6 Air capacity: 5
Range: 6 Air class: 5

Forrestal
Attack: 2 Anti-air: 7
Defend: 3 Bombardment: 0
Movement: 6 Air capacity: 7
Range: 6 Air class: 7

So the stats would suit the 1954 carrier imho. And no the name seems to be the final one, as other ships with intermediate names have had their final name stated as Yorktown [II] (originally Bon Homme Richard). So unless any others have any new information I will have to go on with the assumption that the ship is intended as a "what if" counter, and that the "1944" date is for availability only.

Yep, I agree. I expect those stats are also better then the Midways.

Hi Terje,

Which list of naval counters are you using? There are a set of WiF counters which go beyond the historical end of WWII and we don't need descriptions for those. Ask Steve to send you the correct list.

I made the same mistake with the air counters...

Yea a little better at least:

Midway
Attack: 2 Anti-air: 5
Defend: 3 Bombardment: 0
Movement: 6 Air capacity: 7
Range: 5 Air class: 7

and the Forrestal has a second build cycle cost of 6 vs the Midway's 5.
