Of course you disagree, you're from Negativity.[;)] I'd like to know just how seriously a high DL limits a sub's ability to attack. I think it is very severe from what I've seen in my game thus far. At any rate the sub sightings have to drop drastically. Main thing once this is done is to get the DC racks dropping enough charges per attack, right now they only drop one per attack when really they should be dropping at least three per rack. This can be accomplished with the editor thankfully. Aside from the air spotting, how do you feel about the new ASW? I think Mike Wood did a wonderful job on it.

I have one Nik game where I have lost 26 ships to sub torps and we have played 55 days. That is just under .5 ship per day. I have not lost a sub yet and have sunk 3 of his IJN subs. That is where my 'feel' that subs are getting too many chances to fire. I may be wrong and maybe as time goes on and I have more escorts available I can lower the loss rate. I am not sure right now but I am sure I have had a couple of ships damaged by sub torps also, so the rate actually is probably higher.

In my other game I have lost 34 ships in 75 days, again just under .5 ships sunk per day. Lets see, in 1400 turns I should lose about 630 ships to subs at that rate. Seems to be a bit high to me. I would like to know how other people are faring. [:D][:(]

Thank you for the update pictures Ron, Makes a lot more sense now [&o]

Looks like Japan is really paying for such a deep penetration of the Pacific, given the date can you hold Java till the bitter end? If you can the bitter end might come a heck of a lot faster then usual. All sorts of new possibilities spring to mind. I'm very impressed you managed to retain at least air parity over Java.

As to Subs, yea the new ASW model is 1000x better then the original, mike certainly worked some magic on it. As for your concerns over DL and spotting. In my experience as both japan and allies (using nik mod) subs do work for both sides extremely well in areas that arent blanketed with air patrols, and they should be a lot less effective in heavily patrolled water. whether the massive detection is too powerful ?? I really don't know for certain. Air attacks on subs now rarely work imo so while they might be spotted they no longer get plastered with air dropped ordinance all the time.

Maybe the high detection is a necesssity to get the routines to work as they do ?? possibly a trade off for a better asw model ..who know ??

annyway .. thanks for the update , im most impressed with the piccies [:D]
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

I'm not sure if I can force a stalemate in Java given my political points. Java needs some more troops I suspect as Bill is landing alot at Merak. I can however apply pressure elsewhere...teehee. If I can hold out though Bill is in for a world of grief early as you say. If I'm forced back to Timor, just having held on this long is going to play havoc with Bill's ability to get the most out of the DEI's reources and oil, if he get's a chance to repair what is left that is. Could turn out to be alot like the Solomons and New Guinea campaigns.

It's my experience that the sub sightings skyrocket when float plane equipped ships are concentrated in one area. That is what is occurring in the Java Sea right now as all Bill's BBs and cruisers seem to be bombarding Batavia. I'm thankful that the number of attacks vs subs has been reduced though. I've lost 5 of six subs to air dropped bombs so far.

Next game I play will be the new CHS and I'm going to adjust the dc rack totals to get racks to drop 4 DCs per attack, not the one they are now. Going to adjust the ammo to match as well. This should increase the lethality of shipborne ASW attacks, something which I know a few folks are concerned about.

Bill is losing the air war in Burma as his Oscars are being outmatched by Spitfires and Hurricanes. In China, the air war has been rather sedentary with a few Chinese bombing missions but today a major (every moderate ranged fighter in the Chinese theatre) conducted a sweep over Nanchang and basically wiped out the Nates and Oscars there. A battle of the 1930's vintage first generation monoplanes. All together, 30 Oscars and 15 Nates were posted as lost on the Intel Board today.

Kearsarge goes under the scrapper's torch...

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Seeing as I have preserved my fleet and not lost a carrier, USN/RAN heavy cruiser or USN light cruiser after nearly a year of combat, I figured I'd post my reward for careful and lucky gameplay.

Sounds like your opponent is using his subs more vs shipping than as scouts for the fleet. Is this the case?

Well, yes they are. I lost CV Yorktown to a sub between SF and PH. She got hit about 1/3 of the way from SF. What really sucked was that she got to SF and I disbanded the TF and she had 90 FLT damage. That night she sank. [&:] In the 6 days it took for her to travel back she never took more than 8 FLT damage increase. So she gets to a nice big port, docks, and sinks?

Anyway, they are both using their subs off of the WC and the East coast of Australia. One put about 6 subs around Pago Pago. The problem is that you can not sink them and heavy air patrols are not suppressing them at all. I even had one put a sub into PH hex and I could not do anything to it for three turns. You would think that having 100 plus 2 and 4 engine bombers on ASW patrol could do something about a sub in that 60 mile hex, not to mention 60 PBYs doing Naval Search. All at 100% mind you.

But one thing I hate is that even knowing where the subs are, the AI will still move my transport TFs right over them and in my view it looks like 50% of the time the subs are getting a shot off with the IJN getting about 70% hits. I am losing a lot of ships but my opponents will have to take them back for new torps soon.

Another case: I spotted 4 subs in the hex adjacent to SF. I put all the WC bobmbers on ASW, 100 feet. Sent 2 6DD ASW Tfs and not a shot was fired at the subs, lucikly for me, no sub firings either( Yorktown was passing through with 6 DDs attached ).

I have lost a CV, 2 CAs, 3 CLs and 5 DDs to subs, the rest minor ships( AKs, APs, TKs, PGs, MSWs, etc. )

You must be having the worst luck. I've sunk 13 Jap subs with depth charge attacks and 6 with air dropped bombs. Bill and I seem to be having a hell of a time intercepting enemy shipping with subs unless in choke points or enemy base hexes and approaches to bases. When I set up a CS convoy the AI routing turns into linguini sometimes as it "avoids" enemy subs. Basically the reverse of what you are experiencing.

If they are getting bombed or are in various states of disruption/fatigue I believe the movement is reduced. Maybe this is happening?

They are not being bombed and have low disruption/fatigue. Maybe I just need to put a boot up the commanders ass to get them moving. I was having the same trouble with troops in China that were in rear areas moving to the front that would move very slowly.

Sorry to chime in so late, I just "rediscovered" the fun of reading the AAR's.

In regards to supply moving on it's own from Kendari to the hex dot to the northwest, or the supply heading over the Owen-Stanley mountains on it's own: I speculate that you have "expand all bases" on at start. So, the supply is "needed" by these other bases (which start at low levels) in order to expand. I routinely turn off "expand all bases", "accept reinforcments", and so on, then spen several hours going through all my units and bases, and turning "on" only those that I wish to spend those reinforcments supply on.

My apologies if this does not make any sense, or has already been covered...

In regards to that screenshot of the USN VS squdron with 8 LCDRs and 5 CDRs flying in it with experience levels of 80+: Holy Cow! Is it still that way?? Is this related to the missing leaders bug and the bug were a file gets corrupted from other concurrent WiTP games?

I'm going to test your theory about the "expand bases influence". In fact it is on. I'll try it! Very good thinking.

I think the leader/pilot thingamabob is listed as fixed for the 1.8 patch.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/24/42

I've started to consciously maintain pressure on Bill through the air by focusing on an number of theatres simultaneously. If he wants to contest any he will either have to start using larger numbers of aircraft or better quality aircraft. Burma has the RAF blasting the Tavoy resource centres after neutralizing the Oscars and Nates in that theatre. China has the AVG and CAF pounding on LCUs outside of Japanese bases, amassing for a possible bid for Changsha. If Bill does not bring in more or better planes to China, Nanchang is going to see a resumption of the air attacks on its heavy industry and resources. The South and Southwest Pacific has seen a growth of airpower with which to harass Japanese possesions in those areas. All of this is aimed at forcing Bill to dilute his efforts in the DEI.

Bill is very quiet in this AAR, trying to make me nervous or something, eh?
