How do you determine which version you are on?

I would like also to play PBEM - what shoud I do to get better at the game?

In the lower left hand corner of the selection screen the version number is shown (atleast in later versions - I cannot vouch for the earliest versions).

In the attached screen shot the version number is 1.087 (the latest).

As for getting better - the simple answer is to play alot. First against the AI till you win against that with ease and then PBEM which is where the real fun lies.
