The desperate defenders of Java pull off another repulsed attack. How long can this go on with the squad generation rates as low as they are for the Dutch? Should I make every effort to reinforce Java or just maintain the pressure I have been doing so far? I'm limited by Political Points seeing as I have retained the services of the RN CVs and their FAA groups having told Winnie to bugger off.

Has anyone noticed that any bombardments coming after defending are always completely nullified?

Interesting thing about sub attacks when the sub has some empty tubes, in this case Truant has only two torps left so the forward tubes are empty. Truant attacks but fires no torpedoes. The random selection of tubes does not change despite the fact that some of the tubes are empty so 50% of the time the sub won't fire despite "attacking".

I'm having the same success at Batavia as I had at Manila and Singapore...just enough firepower to hold off the Japanese. I'm thankful of the sub cordon around Batavia as it must be somewhat responsible for Bill's lack of bombardments.

Allied Bombardment attack
Attacking force 5740 troops, 20 guns, 1 vehicles

Notice the zeroed effect of the bombardment due to the Japanese attack. I've yet to see any damage done by bombardments made after an enemy attack, deliberate or shock.

Ron...Im seeing some slightly different ASW results in my v1.795 games. Ive started 3 v1.795 games and my results have been consistent in all three. Basically, I track IJN subs day after day with my search and ASW AC. I send out ASW TFs of 6 DDs(house rule max limit). These DDs are mostly the RN with ASW rating of 8 or the USN flush decks and DMS with an ASW rating of 4. Usually the IJN sub gets off the first shot and usually they miss. But I most likely only "rattle" the IJN skipper's cage and they escape. Over 3 games Ive lost 15 of my ASW DDs to maybe 10 IJN subs so a consistent loss ratio of 3:2 even with every day spotting and tracking by ASW AC. The hunters seem to be at a disadvantage to the hunted. So far I have yet to hit a sub with ASW AC let alone sink one in v1.795. Like Nomad, I have faced the specter of an IJN sub sitting on my shallow water friendly base hex day after day immune to ASW AC at 1 hex range and 100' altitude.

Granted, these are all early war results as my IJN opponents all surrender in the first couple of months. CHS has a pretty cool upgrade feature as the Clemson Class flush deck DDs upgrade on 1/1/42 from ASW 4 to ASW 8 with SG radar and I have yet to test these in ASW combat.

As far as Allied subs go, I am _MUCH_ more likely to suffer damage or sink from Japanese ASW AC than from ASW TFs.

Hope this info is useful. And keep up the good show in China.

Thanks, but the situation in China is the result of loads of hard work by the CHS folks.[&o] You will know what I mean as you progress a little in a CHS campaign if you have not already. I just love the CHS scenario.

As for ASW I usually only send a group out if the sub is in the same hex or adjacent to the ASW TFs home base. I do this for a number of reasons. Booting a TF a few hundred miles and conducting ASW attacks vs a sub the same turn are a wee bit on the gamey side for me given the sub is usually the hunter until technology catches up with old subs designs by mid 43. I also limit myself to one hex range so that any ship damaged by a torp retires and is inport the next turn. I don't play with Allied damage control ON so I'm very careful.

Batavia Falls November 1st, 1942!

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Well, according to the Japanese replay anyway.[8|] I played the replay twice and got two entirely different outcomes. First try, Batavia was again lost, this time at 3:1 odds. I ran it again because I wanted to check on a sighting and I had S-44 hit two ships in two attacks, sinking a freighter as well as damaging the tanker in the two previous replays. And get this, Batavia held out at 1-1 odds! This replay bug really needs to get fixed. It is not a game breaker but it would be nice if at least the root cause was nailed down so the variety of folks who are experiencing a variety of sync issues can finally enjoy the replays as Allies for once.

So Bill has taken Batavia! Java's defenders are more than a little concerned as the island is difficult to defend on the western half. I'm not sure how long I can hold Java given the amount of LCU firepower Bill has deployed on the island, and having a decent base like Batavia makes his position extremely strong. Should I bring in more troops and make Java the meatgrinder of the Pacific? It is almost 1943 and the DEI is the centrepiece of any Japanese bid for success so it is very tempting. I've got the LBA necessary for a prolonged campaign but the ground forces are the questionable issue. I don't see any need to involve the USN carriers, they are better used elsewhere to keep Bill guessing and stretched as thin as possible.

I'm amazed at how many "Milk Runs" I'm enjoying...Kendari, Amboina, Lautem, Tavoy, Rahaeng, all of China, Rabaul, Espirity Santo... No Japanese opposition. I've noticed that Bill is still flying Nates in front line service. Perhaps he is experiencing production issues?[X(][;)]

All those engineers in Batavia and they did squat...all resources and oil are undamaged. Now I have to bomb them. Can't do anything about the massive stockpile of oil and resources though...yet another free gift for japan. Hmmm...I'm seeing a pattern here.[:D] Perhaps the design could have been made to work more like building fortifications. Player should be able to dictate whether the resources/oil still produce or not, and be given the tools to attempt to destroy them rather than again having to trust TIMMY![8D]

Well, in accordance with my need to attack strategic targets like ports, resources, oil, and HI in an attempt to get Bill to divert some of his airpower back to China and Burma, I've ordered missions as far as Hanoi, with disappointing results thus far.

Samarinda and Balikpapan about to be invaded?

Post by Ron Saueracker »

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/04/42

Bill must be prepping for an assault on Samarinda and Balikpapan as he is pounding the two airfields into dust and a couple sizeable TFs have shown up off Jolo.Tawi Tawi.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 22,54

Japanese Ships
AK Momoyama Maru, Shell hits 2
Allied Ships
SS O16, hits 4

This was wild to watch (yaaay, I got to actually see an accurate replay)! O-16 opened the action using her 88mm and was promptly smothered by return fire, taking 4 penetrating 3" hits in return and losing a torpedo room's services...the same once selected for the attack I guess because no torps were fired. Pretty sloppy job by the Dutch CO.

Sub attack at 22,54 N of Bangka Is

Japanese Ships
AK Tairai Maru, Shell hits 3, on fire
Allied Ships
SS O16

This is the second time that this sub has attacked on the surface and not fired torpedoes because the tubes selected to fire are either out of action or empty. Two banks of tubes have torps. A 1 in 3 chance and the empty tubes are chosen again. This is a flaw which occurs alot.

Again O 16 attacks, submerged this time and guess what? It chooses to fire the empty tubes again! Because it was a submerged attack the animation showed the sub firing 0 533mm torps! Perhaps Joe and Don can look into this. Anyway, the punishment for being both foolhardy and stupid is death and the O-16 succumbed to the depth charging of Akigumo and Akizuki.

Contrary to what I've been told I believe that crippled subs (50% or greater flood damage?) can't dive. In this example S-36 is once again detected by the big Japanese TFs in the Makassar Strait and attacked. Replay says S-36 "dives deep" but Ushio hits the sub four times with her 5" main battery and the sub goes down. In any case, this makes two submarines sunk by Japanese surface ASW today, the best performance so far this game.
