Post by Speedysteve »

Hi all,

2 day update since the 24th was relatively quiet with bad weather grounding all air operations.

---------------

On the 23rd Libs hit Taung Gyi damaging resource production down to 55% capacity.

---------------

SS Silversides reported firing at and missing AK Nitiren Maru in the Sulu Sea on 23rd.

Luckily on the 24th she found the damaged AK Nitiryu Maru (damaged by Sawfish on 20th May 1943). She finished the freighter off with a torpedo.

---------------

Tomorrow an AK, 3 x AP and an AO arrive at San Francisco

Speedy,

Do you keep track of all damage you cause and who caused it? If so, why?

Hi Mike,

For some strange reason I pay a lot of attention to sub ops and ASW in general. I personally believe it's one of my strong points of WiTP play.

Also I just feel it brings something different to an AAR rather than the usual stuff.

Basically yes I record any sub attack/ASW attack [8D]

Hi all,

The latest patch has now been applied - 1.8[8D]

-----------

SS Hake had fun with new attack logics[;)]

Patrolling 180 miles south of Iwo Jima she sank the empty TK Matsumoto Maru with 2 torpedo's. The destroyer escorts searched frantically. Some of the DC's landed near enough by to pop a few rivets.

SS Thresher located another TK convoy in the middle of the South China Sea. 6 torpedo's fired at TK Fujisan Maru all failed to detonate[:-]

-------------

Here are the relative assault values at key locations in Burma and China:

Ground combat at Kunming

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 5494 troops, 193 guns, 0 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 4275

Defending force 229843 troops, 249 guns, 0 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 5894

Allied ground losses:
30 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Chungking

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 2430 troops, 83 guns, 0 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 7807

Defending force 241658 troops, 297 guns, 12 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 6809

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Myitkyina

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 94211 troops, 717 guns, 457 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 1835

Defending force 159603 troops, 1203 guns, 22 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 3039

Japanese ground losses:
21 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 34,28

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 81941 troops, 709 guns, 990 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 2091

Defending force 85245 troops, 639 guns, 309 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 1801

Japanese ground losses:
31 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

---------------

Tomorrow SS Raton and an AK arrive at San Francsico.

Hi all,

SS Sawfish encountered a couple of MSW's on ASW patrol NW of San Marcelino. 1 of them came close to detecting my baby but failed.

---------------

Taung Gyi's resource production is down to 42% capacity. Hard to knock it down to very low levels with 50ish heavies. Pretty reasonable i'd say.

Air attacks against IJA positions in Burma and China.

In the next 2-3 days there will probably be enough ready P38's in Darwin for a strike against Timor.

---------------

The main bulk of LCU's on their way from Noumea to Midway are about 1/2 way there now.

Tomorrow an LST and AR Jason arrive at San Francisco.

SigInt comes up trumps again:

Hi all,

San Francisco was a hive of action in the late evening!

Orders had gone out for various ships to form up and for various untis to move towards the embarking area...........

Men of XIV Corps, 1st Cav Division, 250th CD unit, 7th Infantry Division and 18th Engineer Rgt (new addition to Falcon) began loading on transports.

Meanwhile over 800,000 tonnes of supply and fuel were loaded on freighters and tankers ultimately bound for either Midway or Wake.

Another TF was formed in the distance comprising of 10's of ships that will embark men at Pearl Harbour en route to Midway and then Wake.

It's time to get things moving [8D]

---------------

During the day of the 27th SS Balao and SS Pompon were subjected to ineffectual ASW attacks from MSW's.

SS Seawolf patrolling 120 miles NE of Jesselton sank MSW Tomozono Maru #3 with a torpedo.

---------------

Faber is reinforcing Burma. 5 more units were spotted on the rail line....see below.

This is very interesting to me. I spend tons of time thinking from the Japanese perspective. I need to try and figure out what the Allied player is thinking. You're helping to show me where possible weak points are in my defense perimeter.

Thanks, Speedy!

It is interesting, as an Allied player with all of his games still stuck in April '42 or before, it does my heart good to see some jap butt getting kicked.

Gives me hope that one day I will have more than P-40s and Hurris to fight with. Go get them Speedy!

Hi all,

Thanks Niceguy. It is indeed good to see Mid-43 as Allies. I have another Allied game going against Pompack in June 42 and it is tough going........

It's going to be a lot of fun very soon [8D]

-----------------

SS Pogy got in on the action today. She had recently arrived on station inbetween Pagan and Marcus Island. She located a well protected convoy (protected by IJN destroyers no less). She managed to negotiate the escorts and sank AP Haisho Maru with 2 torpedos. Unfortunately the ship was empty.......

-----------------

Most of Faber's reinforcements reached the Mandalay front today. Among them are divisions. His beginning assault value increased from 1801 to 3271. He'll need another 1000 points to get 2:1 at beginning values.

-----------------

San Francisco is still a frenzy of activity. About 50% of the loading has occured. Some air groups were also loaded on board AK's today. Many already exist at Midway but no harm in having a few more:

1 x PB4Y
1 x F4U
1 x B25J
2 x SBD

Hi all,

Interesting..........The airfields of Mandalay have received a batch of aircraft by the looks of it. After being abandoned for days this strikes me as strange. As such basing it on Fabers last tactic he CAPped the rail line. I'm therefore standing down the heavies and escorting the rail line big time. We'll see if i'm right or wrong.

Also Glen spotted an ML at Midway. Sneaky gits. I have 24 patrol planes searching but rarely find the b*stard subs. I have found 1 480ish miles south of Midway. An ASW TF is en route.

----------------

SS Rasher heavily damaged PG Aso Maru 180 miles SE of Hong Kong with a torpedo.

----------------

Even more enemy forces have reached the Mandalay line - upto an AV of 3778

Hi all,

Hmm. A minor annoyance. I guessed right in that he CAPped the rail; line but WHY ON EARTH didn't my P38's take off on escort. Everythign was set right. Instead a measely 8 Spits took off. Great............

I lost 46 aircraft to his 11.

I'm hoping the useless P38 will escort my raid to Mandalay aiirfields tomorrow[:-]

------------

SS Salmon patrolling 120 miles south of Sandakan fired 4 fish at MSW W.10....they failed to detonate.

SS S-27 spotted a small convoy 360 miles NW of MArcus Island. The small MSW escort kept her at bay though.

------------

Well this is it guys.........a HUGE armada set sail from San Francisco at midnight. The yare bound for PH to pick up more troops, re-stock fuel and then onto Midway and Wake.

Combat wise we have:

TF1 - CV Lexington/Saratoga, CVL Independence, BB North Carolina, CA, CL, 2 x CLAA + 10 x DD's - c.210 aircraft.

TF2 - CV Enterprise/Hornet, CVL Bellau Wood, BB Washington, CA, CL , CLAA, + 11 x DD's - c.210 aircraft.

TF3 - CV Essex/Wasp, 2 x CVL, BB South Dakota, CA, CL, CLAA, + 10 x DD's - c.240 aircraft.

3 x SAG. Each containing 3 x BB, 2 x CA, 2 x CL + 10ish DD's

Transport CV group - 3 x CVE + escorts.

2 x Transport TF's containing 60+ ships each (a 3rd is en route from Noumea to Midway nearing Johnston Island).

2 x supply convoys. The first heading to Midway now containing 54,000 tonnes of supply and 480,000 tonnes of fuel. The 2nd will move to Wake containing 80,000 tonnes of supply and 216,000 tonnes of fuel.

31st May 1943

Post by Speedysteve »

Hi all,

The last day of May brings a big day of action! Let's start in Burma:

My raid on Mandalay found the Tojo/Tony party on CAP. Good 121 enemy fighters rose to meet my 72 Lightning veterans. In any means it was a clear victory for the Allies. 62 planes were destroyed by my Lightnings and a further 57 were smashed to pieces on the ground. I lost 22 P38's and 7 Liberators.

On the ground things were just as bad for Faber. He decided to attack my defences on the rail line with the addition of his newly arrived formations. It made no difference:

Ground combat at 34,28

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 179395 troops, 1648 guns, 610 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 3780

Defending force 87251 troops, 716 guns, 992 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 2112

Japanese max assault: 7420 - adjusted assault: 3903

Allied max defense: 2197 - adjusted defense: 4487

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
10264 casualties reported
Guns lost 163
Vehicles lost 38

Allied ground losses:
987 casualties reported
Guns lost 44
Vehicles lost 8

------------------

My heavies at Darwin decided to destroy what is left of productuion in the area. They wiped out the resource production on Amboina today. Sorong tomorrow.

------------------

Sub War:

SS Kingfish frustrated me today. Located 360 miles west of Eniwetok she encountered ML Yaeyama. She fired 6 fish which failed to detonate. She tried an end around attack and fired her last 4 torpedos which missed![:-] She back' off to Midway. SS Peto departed today to replace her.

SS Drum sank MSW Yoshino Maru with a torpedo 180 miles of Tarakan.

My Midway based ASW group found the I-Boat but the g*t I-30 blew up DD Bagley with 2 torpedo's before any of my ships had a chance to get him. The other 4 ships are to continue searching the area.

------------------

June arrive as do Corsair IV's and B26G's....July is THE BIG MONTH for plane arrivals..........

Hi all,

Normal bombing resumed over Burma with FB's hitting IJA troops on the Rail line and LBA from Dimapur and Ledo hitting Myitkyina.

The Libs once more bombed Taung Gyi Resources. Down to 30% production. The yare to target Pagan tomorrow........

A sweep of 23FG Lightnings is ordered from Yunan to Hanoi tomorrow.

---------------

SS Grayback encountered a well protected convoy in the middle of the Phillipine Sea. No target vessels were identified since DD Makinami located the sub and dropped several DC's in the vicinity. Light damage sustained. Remaining on station.

The Midway ASW group is returning to Midway after finding no evidence of I-30...I will get her.

--------------

Several ship classes upgraded today - BB Royal Sovereign, CA London, CA Australia, CL Leander, DD Isaac Sweers, SC class, AD/AE/AS classes.

Tomorrow CA Suffolk arrives at Karachi and a DE at San Francisco.

Hi all,

Pagan has also tasted Allied wrath now. 20% of resource production was disrupted today by Libs from Imphal.

My Hanoi sweep from Yunan was fairly successful. My Lightnings shot down 16 enemy Tojo's/Tony's for the loss of 4 Lightnings.

-----------------

SS Drum successfully engaged a freighter today 180 miles east of Tarakan. She hit AK Kano Maru with a torpedo. The escorting MSW's failed to locate my sub.

-----------------

A 3 x CVE replenishment TF was formed in San Francisco today. These babies will resupply my CV losses. They are escorted by 7 x DD and a DE. Heading straight to Midway.....

Tomorrow 3 x AK, a DD and a DE arrive at San Francisco.
