Uses for CVE Long Island and Reinforcement Levels

Post by Mike Wethington »

OK, I realize that CVE Long Island is a carge CVE and basically useless in UV. Anyone have any recommendations on a good use for this VP-sink?

I have been sending it back to Pearl whenever it shows up. I am assuming that the AI looks at the total VP in theatre and decides to release additional shipping at Pearl based on that number. Kinda assumes that the Nimitz (AI) would start aggressively reinforcing the area if the losses (VP) were high. Does the AI do this? Should I just send this hull to a forward area and let my local CAP build up experience defending it against JN airpower?

Suggestions? Recommendations? Practical Uses?

Noumea is weak on lba at the start of the campaign. If you get the Long Island early enough, you can use it to transfer a fighter squadron or two from Australia.

The only other uses are pretty gamey.

Yep best used to ferry fighter units early in the game........she makes a good bomb/torpedo magnet later in the war when she is more expendable[:D]

For those of you who like slightly cheesy tactics.[:-]

Such as myself[:D]

Get your six carriers (the real ones) in 2-3 CV groups.

Get the Long Island in a seperate one (I like to put in a few CAs to bump up AA and
make it a more tempting target.

If you see the KB prowling for convoys, pummelling one of your bases....
Wait a couple of turns...Let the pilots tire a bit(his not yours).

Then have the LI set on react. Send it right at the KB...Put your other
cv groups to be about 7 hexes away from where you think the kb will be and
cross your fingers. With any luck, some of his planes will attack the LI instead.

Works best if he does not have CSs with him spotting your CVs...If you get real lucky and
he does not spot you, all of his attacks in the morning will be on the LI group.

Well nothing is perfect...[:(]
It helps the odds...

But does not make it an autovictory[8|]

Much to my dismay[X(]
