i had 40 cap -31 attacked against 17 unescorted sbd
16 sbd attacked
i think it is too much
there was not even single us fighter to delay zeros
so not 1 but maybe 3-4 or even 5 should be shot down ?
maybe not every plane should be able to continue ?

All fighters present in the hex at the time of an attack are eligible to attempt to scramble. This is basically all fighters not conducting LRCAP or offensive missions (including those escorting strikes) during that phase .

Including those set for Training?

Let's think about this a bit.
1. Do the CVEs have Radar? ( probably not ? )
2. Do the A6M2's have Radios? ( probably not )
3. Are you assuming that all 31 of the A6M2's should always be in position to intercept before the SBDs make their bomb run? ( no way they can be )

You might feel you were unlucky but I think the result is about right. If you got lucky then you might splash 3 or more SBDs.

I am unaware of a CVE without radar.

A6M2s were designed to carry radios. Many pilots preferred to leave them behind for a bit of extra maneuverability. Nevertheless, the command ship would usually have one - which is why we have reports of their messages.

You should go look again, the IJN CVs don't have radar and neither do their CVLs or CVEs.

I am not going to worry about ferreting out the references but the IJN airborne radios were not very good and many or most pilots removed them from their A6M2s. So what if the command ship had one, it is hard to use it to talk to those who left their radio on the ground.

Naval carrier based Zeros had radios. (The Tainen boys removed them around the time of Lae/Lunga)
However the carrier Zero's radios didn't work so great so it was dicey. (USN ironically had a similar though not as severe issue prompting Fletcher to request VHF radios after WatchTower began)

Biggest challenge for Zero Fleet Defense was that the Japanese had no radar (in most cases) and no equivilent to the budding USN fighter direction. (Each IJN CV controlled/managed it's own CAP)

I think it should be tough to stop the SBDs. I belive I read that the SBDs actually shot down as many zero fighters as they lost to them. Hardly a situation where they would need to cut and run at the site of a zero.

I'm sure the SBD gunners thought so....[;)]

Short burst of the SBD guns could send a Zero Down in Flames[:D] i read somwhere that i think in the Battle of Coral Sea one of the SBD was flying next to a Kate and the Gunners shoot to one another with the easy to predict Result[:D]

i find it is better when A2A combat is concerned
i know it was aimed for leaking cap
i can't say which version of air combat is better /worse - stock or Nik mod probably Nik mod is better but it needs tweaking in pure fighter vs bomber engagements
Nik Mod only changes the values of some devices in the database. The combat routines are exactly the same as the game code has NOT changed. Because of the increase in a/c durability more a/c are damaged and less are destroyed. Poor results are most likely attributed to detection level/ lack of radar/ altitude/ fatigue etc

Of course, this precludes a situation such as the one which finally caused the RAF to give the go ahead to bringing 303 Squadron to operational status (from training status).
