RE: Pending RHS release
RHS is a baby brother to CHS - which is an older attempt to revise Matrix towards more historically correct scenarios. CHS means Combined Historical Scenario - referring I supposed to the "combined" efforts of a group. CHS also is the main source of scenarios which use Andrew Brown's Extended Map (but others also use it). In spite of that, you can use the stock map with some CHS scenarios - and also Andrew's first map - which is not "extended." Extended means you get bases from Aden to Panama - for the Allies - not to fight over (I guess - I think the point of the I-400 was to attack Panama- but I hear it is "cheating.")
RHS was born because a number of changes proposed for CHS were either going to take too long to be incorporated - or because they were unacceptable to some in the CHS group. RHS has its own map - now released at Roguemarine and I hear Spooky's site - which is 100% compatable with Andrew Brown's Extended Map. That means you can use either the CHS or RHS map with any extended scenario. The differences are technical: RHS allows ferry movement at more points, river navigation at certain points, has more mountains, and a different interpretation of vital railroads/trails, etc. The revised art for the RHS map is done by Cobra - which is a good thing since I am not an artist. Lots of people have little things they wanted - Russian ships - blimps - you name it - and I either adopt their work or implement it on request - it is the RHS way to be open to members of the forum - and the "author" line of RHS scenarios says "The RHS Team"
Andrew Brown - coordinator for CHS at the moment - and I - coordinator for RHS - are cordial allies - and we share files and ideas almost daily. Our goal is to provide the Matric community with options - not to fight a battle to the death over who is better. [Are apples better than oranges? I see no point in such questions.] RHS is more open to change and, for that reason, more dangerous - more likely to involve technical problems. We are introducing radical devices - gliders, midget submarines, kaiten, blimps, MAD (a detector of submarines), drop tanks - all for the first time in a major release - and all of which may fail to work as desired (although it appears from testing that all will work rather well). CHS is devoted to "stability" and seeks not to change a scenario for long periods of time: RHS will update any scenario the moment a better bit of data is tested "safe" - if you want an old version you better save it yourself. Neither is "right" for all users - YOU get to choose. RHS is concerned with problems like "the armor on Japanese turrets is too thick" and "the crusing range of many ships is too great" - and gives priority to correcting such issues - even at the expense of "stability."
The concept of RHS was first proposed by Andrew Brown in a suggestion to me. The name was proposed by Joe Wilkerson in the context of a famous submarine simulation variant - RSH - Real Sub Hunter. That game is sometimes criticized for being "too realistic" - something usually said of anything I am associated with. RHS will have a more logistic focus - and make you work to get things where you want them - if we get where we want to go (no more AKs to burn).

Maybe not. We may be able to switch maps using a utility so you only need one. I do that.
RE: Pending RHS release
Pardon a maybe silly question or two. I just looked at the link to Rogue's site - is there one of those files that is all-inclusive, or do I have to download all the pieces? Second dumb question - are all of those pieces final release (I know the scenario is pending)?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

RE: Pending RHS release
I'm very interested in trying the RHS (as well as the next version of CHS)! Thanks for the hard work.
Quick question: Would you consider adapting your RHS changes to the shorter scenarios (#1-8) that came with the game?
Quick question #2: Is the RHS (or CHS for that matter) suitable for play against the AI, or do the changes throw things too far out of whack for the computer to handle on its own?

due to 4 considerations I decided to do several files 1 to assist those on dial upPardon a maybe silly question or two. I just looked at the link to Rogue's site - is there one of those files that is all-inclusive
2 very unstable FTP uploads made it impossible to to get to sites in upload 3 because of size
to keep two copies on a host site hurts their capacities 4 it makes updating files with new issues much easier to handle

CobraAus - thanks much for your reply. No need to explain, your generousity in doing this for the community is very appreciated! I was just wondering the best way to download.
I've gotten all the files where they need to be (I used a separate install - I have the disk space and it makes things easier to keep straight). It looks like the 'carriers' and 'battleship' startgame_1024 files have the same name and over-write each other when unzipped. Should they be copied to different installations or something?

There may be shorter scenarios - but not adaptations of the stock ones per se. See this answer in your thread on short scenarios for CHS.
I have backed up a bit and delayed release so CHS will be AI friendly - in spite of my lothing for AI. This turns out to be necessary for testing anyway - and I see no point in killing the AI. RHS is now to be based on stock 1.8 as much as possible - almost completely - with exceptions for cause when these clearly are a good idea. The better OB may make the AI work better - to the extent AI works at all.

These file sets are not yet suitable for playing - they are issued only for review of data. There are technical issues - and since I have decided to change foundations - ALL files need to be in sync with those changes
Eventually you will get a separate scenario number for each version. WHAT those numbers will be is not yet determined. It may be every number is already in use by someone! Stay tuned...

RE: Pending RHS release
Sid, you say that the RHS will be based on the stock scenario rather than CHS. Does this mean that the allies will be dealing with Fighter Groups and Bomber Groups as opposed to the individual squadrons?
My personal preference is still for the latter, mainly because I hate seeing "49th FG/A" ...

No - it is a real conversion - and by the way CHS is also converting - but I don't know the details of how much. We only are putting common things in stock slots. Almost everything done by CHS is in RHS - possibly more stuff - possibly corrected data - but all the CHS work is preserved as is or in improved form - nothing is gone except some junk small craft (pretend sub hunters for example, rocket landing craft that don't work, etc).
RE: Pending RHS release
So, when can we expect first scenario files? Or at least a readme [;)]
