Paradox Doomsday Direct Download
I really just want to thank Matrix for having a darn good direct download system.
Last night, on an impulse, I bought the HOI Doomsday add-on for $19.99 (nice price, I'll say that for them) and I have never had a more aggravating experience. I had to download their proprietary "ZtormDownload" software plus install Microsoft Net version 2.0 before I could even download my game. Then once the download started it took over 4 hours on my fast DSL connection (it was running about 25 Kb per sec). I even aborted and restarted...no improvement. THEN... I had to go to still another web page to download the manual! AND... then a 3rd page to get the 1.1 patch and download it. FINALLY, the installation took nearly 45 minutes.
I gave up and went to bed at this point and just let the computer do it's thing.
So, I just have to comment that I have NEVER had such a negative experience with ANY of the many downloaded games that I have bought from Matrix.
Good work guys...you catch some grief sometime, but I think you do a great job. Experiences like the one I just had with Paradox really make you aware of how good we have it here! [&o][&o][&o]

I use Fileplanet for my World of Warcraft patches. (The Blizzard "loader" really suxxors!)
Unfortunately, I do not think that you can find Matrix patches on Fileplanet. But they may have the HOI stuff. Ill go look...
Bah! Nevermind. They have a patch (v1.1) for the Doomsday addon, but I forgot that you were getting the addon itself. My apologies.

I found Doomsday for $14.99 at Fry's the other day, and it comes with a nicer manual than the one that came with HOI2.

I got a free copy from Paradox, just to check the little "The Wargamer" ad thats in the boxed version [:D]
RE: Paradox Doomsday Direct Download
I bought Doomsday from Amazon.co.uk. It was only slightly more expensive than Paradox direct download, which I nixed about 0.0000000000000041 seconds after reading their how-to...

Yep, it was an impulse to grab the download version, but, then, look how far I have to drive to get to a store... and the even longer wait for the mail to arrive out here [:D]

I bought it at 25 CAD.
I was surprised that this standalone expansion actually comes with the full game of HOII
which is nice.
Their printed manual also looks good

I read somewhere that some pages were missing from the manual (i think about 20) and some of the middle pages were upside down (on the Doomsday forums)

RE: Paradox Doomsday Direct Download
mine is fine
RE: Paradox Doomsday Direct Download
My manual is ok too [:)] Hav'nt looked at it yet though [:D]
Working my way from 1936 as Uk which is a change for me as I normally play the Axis. I am still trying to figure out the merits of the Intelligence section, so far I have 5 spies in Germany and can see what they are working on but I have not tried any smear campaigns yet.
Got mine from Play.com for £14.99 [8D]
I do like HOI2, HOI1 was a bit heavy for me and I never really got that far into it, I might give it a second look at some point though...
Cheers

On the subject of Paradox, I've just ordered 'Take Command: 2nd Mannassas' from play.com for a 'whopping' £14.99. Excellent value. I can wait a couple of weeks extra to to pay considerably less than the direct download for a box-copy, and avoiding the grief rhondabrwn described.

RE: Paradox Doomsday Direct Download
It's bloody tough...and I'm damn sure I haven't mastered it yet, but with the manual and help from the HoI2 forums (nearly as friendly as here), it's not insurmountable. I'm currently running a 1939 campaign as Axis and have control of Europe bar Vichy France, Spain and Portugal (although I'm thinking about them)...the rest of Europe are puppets or occupied. I currently have about 100 divisions facing Russia...but I'm too scared it will all go pear shaped!
The game has great depth. There's production, research, diplomacy with many, many different kinds of dipolomatic moves on offer. I like the way battles are handled with all the intricacies that come with them. It's a very good strategic level game, with loads to occupy you.
HoI2 Doomsday contains HoI2 and the new Doomsday add on...so there is no need to buy HoI2 and then Doomsday...and for £11.99 from Play.com it's any strategic level gamers dream IMHO.

Just picked it up from play.com - don't know when i'll get to play it though, so, so busy. Bought BIN about 2 months ago and have not even installed it yet.
Might be able to give both a go by about 2008[8D]

RE: Paradox Doomsday Direct Download
The game surely has some nice ideas, being the best part of this whole series like EU or Victoria, most diplomatic and intelligence options. Nevertheless I realized again that I'm a turnbased player, thinking WEGO the best of possible options. Even with the ability to slow game down very much and pause totally it will get very messy when you get in real war witn adirect neighbour. If you avoid this best you can do is playing the US where you will be relatively safe from instant overrun. Played one session of HOI2 where I appeased the great enemy Japan with economic diplomacy throughout the whole WW2, while building up myself, controlling a seperate Great American Alliance and attacking Germany in the late phase only. Disappointed I was as I read that the most interesting part for me, the Doomsday scenario 1945 already starts amidts a war with the Soviet Union, so you will have no other options in trying to divide the world by diplomacy and intelligence first, without having to play through WW2 again.
Guess I will rather continue playing CoG, WITP, Combat Mission and TotalWar.

I here you about the turn based, and I, too, was very sceptical about buying this because it was RTS (of sorts...just the term puts me off normally) but when I learned how you could slow it down and even pause, I fell in love.
I think the game has masses to offer. In fact, I generally play on the slowest speed and only pause when I need to go diplomatic/production etc...slowest speed is just fine...conquered most of Europe on this setting.

RE: Paradox Doomsday Direct Download
I thought I owed Paradox an update on this thread since I started it. I just received the following e-mail from them announcing a total revamping of their direct download site. SO..... the problems that I encountered may have now been solved.

Dear PoD user,
Around 13:00 CEST today, Paradox on-Demand will go down for a scheduled maintenance of about one hour. When it opens up again, you will find a new and improved version of our download services as well as many new games featured. The new portal will be called Gamersgate.net, and will be announced to the world next week.
What does that mean for you?
Your account login and password will still be the same, and all your games are still available in the same way. When you look at the new site you will also discover that we are now offering a greater variety of games online, including those of other publishers.
German developer Ascaron Entertainment will be first out to place their products on Gamersgate.net. Their well-known titles Sacred, Port Royal II, Patrician III and Tortuga are now available for download through gamersgate.net. Other developers and publishers will follow in the coming weeks.
We hope you will find many enjoyable hours with the games available on Gamersgate.net
Your Paradox/Gamer's Gate Team

This has been a public service announcement. [:D]
Maybe someone else can report on their download efforts with this new setup.

Yes, very fun game.
I also highly recommend EU2 and Crusader Kings. Nothing like setting up an overseas dynasty or putting the hurt on some muslims invading the holy land! [8D]
