Since you seem to take orders for the refreshments, I prefer "Stella Artois" over "Duvel" (comes from living in the Rhineland)

Stella is the stuff we ship to the rest of Europe 'cause *we* won't touch it. Jupiler is the superior German pilsner type beer from the same brewery as Stella - you'll see.

Too late! Leffe is fairly widely available in the UK now, although it tends to be served in the trendier bars. Other stuff like Westmalle and Chimay can be found occasionally, as they started to ship in more Belgian beer when Leffe took off.

I'm very fond of the above, but I still prefer a good bitter or ale. Do you not like them, or do you just only experience the rubbish lagers and export ales like Carling and Watney's Red Barrel?

You'll have to add that you can't get that beer in a regular store - you have to travel to the monistary itself to get a couple cases and last year they even imposed a 1 person, 1 case buying limit when it got too popular.

Strawberry beer is for girls - really, that's their target audience - but real cherry beer is something else : it's not sweet at all, but rather sour tasting - a traditional beer that has hundreds of years of history behind it and has nothing to do with the post-WWII craze for sweet soft drinks. The really good stuff is rare as well and cannot easily be found in a supermarket nor is it exported. "Boone" and "Liefmans" come to mind first.

Leffe took off big time - I could get it everywhere in France (of all places) last year. Having the #3 biggest brewery-conglomerate in the world behind it might have helped a lot.

Never saw those over here - actually with the stuff we have locally there's only a small market left for foreign beers - top of my head : Guinness, Carslberg, Warsteiner, Tuborg, Corona, Labatt, 1664, ... and no Dutch beers at all [:D]

Exactly [;)] - have you ever seen Dutch beer in a pub over here ?

But when you do have a world-class beer like "La Trappe" you don't export it - sounds like the same "keep the good stuff, sell the rest to barbarians who can't taste the difference anyway" mentality [;)]

And amazingly enough : Heineken can brew a good beer : it's called Bintang and it's sold in Indonesia.

For tradition you cant beat British Real Ales. Thousands out there with some crazy names. All specific to certain areas.

Nothing wrong with warmer beer. Firstly, do you *really* need ice-cold beer when it's 5-10 degrees C and pouring rain outside? Secondly, you can taste more when it's warmer: I think half the world chill their beer because it's so insipid there's nothing to lose and plenty to hide.
