Honor to those who serve.

By the way, that same study showed that 25% of all 16 year old drivers will have a crash in their 1st year of driving. My newphew in Iowa has a permit at 14 1/2 so I am sure he will wreck the car before he gets a license.
I never understood this, just how out of it are 16 year olds? I didn't have my first accident until I was 25 (not my fault) and I didn't cause my first fender bender until I was 32. On the other hand when I was 18 a cop pulled me over and told me I had committed 6 moving violations in 3 blocks. [:D] When you're young like that it's not as much a matter of obeying the laws as it is just don't hit stuff. Reflexes and mental sharpness should compensate for poor obedience of the laws. [;)]

Well, it helps if you know/remember that teenagers are unable to assess risk. Literally. Recent studies on how the brain changes during puberty and very early adulthood show that a teen's brain literally is unable to accurately assess risk. They can't understand consequences or forsee how something could go wrong.

That is the reason cited in the study. Teens not only think they are invincable, but their brains can't process the threats that are there. Let alone the fact that they all have cell phones glued to their ears at all times (4X crash risk and 9X llikely to be fatal by the way).

So next time your teen does something stupid and says he doesn't know why he did it he may be telling the truth. Now keep in mind that these are averages. There are many 25 years olds who should not be allowed to operate an electric toothbrush let aone a car.

This same trait is why we use 18 year olds for combat. You tell them "Charge that machine gun" and they will do it. Tell a 30 year old the same thing and he will most likely ask if there is another way.

Mike, I hope the mission is THAT important. I learned early in my career to ID the bosses that are emergency junkies and stay away from them. YOu can spot one by the fact that they love to make themselves more important by elevating the urgency of everything involving them to emergency level.

I work in the Ohio National Guard Joint Operations Center. I'm the logistics weenie. We deal with all mobilizing (and demobing) units (which keeps me very busy this time of year). In addition, we're the focal point for all info coming into and going out of the state. I love the job, but things are very busy now with units moving around. I don't have meetings every weekend, just when certain events occur. There are days when we just sit around here watching Fox News (which is on 24 hours a day here). It pays the bills. Two more years and I can retire if I want to.[:D]

Just remember the phrase:

Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

Unfortunately, i've never been able to convince most folks of the validity of that statement...[:(][8|]

When it comes to mobilizing soldiers, poor planning on someone else's part means I'll do everything I can to fix it. Someone did that for me when it was my turn, and I'll do everything I can for those guys whose turn it is now.
