What Brach are you going for? I can't find it in this thread. If its the Navy be advised I heard they are now giving infantry training to about 1000 sailors to pull combat duty in Iraq. Good luck. I did 21 years and the medical and retirement benefits will not make you rich but will keep you from eating dog food. [:D]

Do your National Gaurd ever get sent abroad?

Oh yeah, we go. I've recently spent a year "abroad" and in about 18 months I'll probably be leaving for another 1.5 years. So far, I've deployed to 3 different countries. I've been away from home about 1/3 of the past 18 years. Part-time job. Heh.[:D]

Good luck and god speed. Pray for Camp Bucca if you get sent to Iraq. Pretty Quiet down there in the south and you can see the Kuwaiti border 1600 meters off the south berm of the Camp.

Convoys are the riskiest job over there. They run the same routes every day after all and bascially at the same times of the day. At Bucca, you will have convoy duty or perimeter security with riot control duties (largest prison camp).

That is if you are Guard........If you are going active duty, well, you will be up north in the hot zone.

Good Luck, Russ, whichever way you want it to go. If you do go to the great sandbox in the east, you can still log onto the forum on the rare occasion from the military's internet cafes, if I'm understanding things correctly. Please take care of yourself and stay in touch with us.

The Army has offered 6 years Combat engineer but I go to the sandy place.
"Army combat engineers." Here's a bayonet, there's a minefield, you know what to do...

Russ, can't you get your six years by going active reserves? Also, have you looked into federal employment as a "bootstrap" to get 20-year retirement for "combined federal service?"

(I understand this also applies when entering that seldom-used facility, the USMC barracks showers).

[X(] Yikes. That sounds a lot like "don't bend over to pick up your soap"! [:D]

That's the Navy. The only thing at risk of being violated by Marines are sheep. [:D][:-]

Not a joke... The US military is manpower-strapped enough that they have to re-up octogenarians like Mog...[:'(]

If you've never been in the service, then yes. If you have been in then here's the formula: # years served + current age must be < 60. You can join the Guard as long as you're no older than 40.

Hi, It's not number of years served plus current age being below 60 it's current age minus years served must be below 60 to complete 20 years service. (so the oldest a non prior service person could be is 40 however the Guard extends it to 64 but regular army will not allow new enlistee over 37.)

My example
I am 50 (will be on May 7th)
I have 14 years service.
So I can complete 20 within the required time.

Yup, you're right Mog. I screwed it up. I meant years remaining to hit 20 years. (Slaps self.)

Hehe. I served 6 years in the Navy, honorable discharge in 1989.

41 + 6 < 60 = true.

However, I doubt I will be called up. I was in the Navy, not the Army/Marines. I have been out for more than 17 years. I am not in shape.

If I am called up, I will let you guys know, because then the stuff has really hit the fan! The Chinese will be landing in San Diego!

But this thread is not about me. (I keep forgetting that. I sidetrack easy. Sorry.)

Good luck, Mog. Hopefully, it will be a short reactivation (if it happens), and you return home with your wits (and sense of humor) intact.

Actually I screwed up. The formula (for you) would be: 41 + (20 - 6) = 55. Congrats, you are eligible. I wouldn't worry about a draft though. If you wanted to join they'd take you.

Damn'. It is time for the generals' revolt (see Admirals Revolt). What kind of insanity is to send someone over 40 to a place like the Sandbox? I can't say more without getting into politics so I wish you all the best Mogami. Good Luck!
