OMG!!!! This from Yahoo's News site. That does it, I am declaring my own country and idiots will be shot on site!

Some New Yorkers were given a pop quizz on geography. Some couldn't locate New York on a world map!!!!

javascript:void(window.open('http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/free?cn ... menubar=no'));

In case that link doesn't work
http://my.yahoo.com/index.html

Why is this a surprise to you?
I can believe that there are some Americans, sadly, that can't locate cities like London, Cape Town, Cairo or even Copenhagen, but to not know where the city you live in is, that blows my mind.

My grandmother, was born in North Texas and only twice ever left left the county in which she was born, but I know for a fact she knew where New York city was.

Dear Diary,

Day 5 since my last PBEM turn. The withdrawl symptoms are already starting, shakes, mild headache, and irretablility. My boss stopped in this morning and he looked surprisingly like Yamamoto...must not give in to temptation.

Half the population of New York couldn't find their own behinds with both hands, a GPS, and a ground guide. When they decided children had "rights" they pretty much killed education. Within 50 years we'll need to change the name of the country from "U. S. of A." to "Moron's is US". Sad..., but true.

50 years? Try 50 minutes! I'm sorry, but 99,999% of Americans are dumber than a lobotomised lab rat...

Like I said, I'm sorry. The US has some of the world's smartest people, but also a disproportionally large percentage of very ignorant ones, who know nothing about the world they're living in. They have all their needs fulfilled by their immediate environment, and see no reason to learn about the world at large.

Let me guess? "...and the rest are Danish immigrants!" It's not that bad yet..., but the "marching morons" are increasing in numbers every day. The easiest way to spot them is they are PROUD if their ignorance.

Nyet, the Danish immigrants have become just as dumb as the rest. I'm a big fan of America as a concept, but it never ceases to amaze me how so many of them there Americans are so ignorant, and, as you said, proud of it.

It's spreading, too... Sooooo many Danish schoolchildren are leaving school without knowing a lot of stuff that somebody my generation would consider basic, general knowledge.

I would say every country has its share of ignoramuses. I'm a college professor by trade and I would say that the truth is somewhere shy of the alarmism induced by erroneous answers to geography quizzes. Definitely a lot of rednecks, but also a lot of educated people.

BTW a lot of the questions on that quiz were rather arbitrary. "In which city is the series CSI set?"

Danes may be smart but publishing inflammatory cartoons of Muslims is not something that would have happened in the US...[;)] I guess PC has been good for something...[:-]

Like I said, the dumbing-down is spreading; lots of ignorant people in this country too. As for the cartoons, believe me: that was a galactic-level piece of bad judgement, but... and you knew there'd be a "but"... the ONLY reason they wouldn't be published in a US paper is that Americans are the most litigious people in the history of everything.

Let's change subjects; don't want Thread II to be flushed down the crapper, like Thread I. How about a couple of battlewagons?

hmmm - NJ class and the Oklahoma?

Not having my reference stuff handy, and being rather restricted in my internet meanderings, i'm not sure about the newer ship (i'll guess the New Jersey, but i am almost positive on the Oklahoma. i think this was shortly before they tried to tow her back to the mainland (and she foundered...)

It's the Wisconsin and the Oklahoma. Just look at the friggin' size difference: the Oklahoma was 18,000 tons lighter than the Wisconsin...
