Supply Theory

Post by el cid again »

I created a number of "natural" economies by

1) Removing sources of secret supply

2) linking together islands that could not work together before - using ferries - or river ferries - or an inland passage ferry (in Canada).

I then "jump started" the economies by giving each point a normal inventory: my first pass was 10 days of output and 5 days of input at each point

I then added tiny amounts of local supply - mainly fish - but sometimes other things to certain points - particularly islands and ports

Then I placed stores at places that had large stockpiles - and sometimes (e.g. Oahu) I had to get creative because WITP won't allow a big enough tank farm (or whatever)

Then I created regional centers with 30 days of supply - and in the case of the USA and Japan some edge points have 90 days - or as close as the game will allow. Finally, I set up Japanese industry with 180 days of full production inventory - which appears to be what was done by CHS. It isn't right- but it is the most we can do with the field values available. I did a point by point calculation - but assumed the basic values were all right (which they probably are not ) unless I know otherwise. That is, I assume that the values for oil, resources, industry, etc were basically right. This is a "quick and dirty" pass to see if things work.

They DO work. Better than I imagined. I have never seen Japan's economy healthy before (in a sense a business person can understand).
I have never seen the Philippine economy work at all. I heard the Russian economy won't work - well it does now. And once I got the ferry system "modified" so it actually works, Coal Harbor (Port Alice in stock and CHS) fills up with supplies and the red goes away. Neat. It will be worth doing a point by point analysis for resource values. But I am not doing that this time.

Honestly, that was not my intent! It may or may not turn out to be true - but I was doing something much more technical: trying to get it right.

What does seem to be true is that the Allies are going to have to work harder. More generally, both sides have to work harder - due to the need to transport more on ships able to carry less. But the Allies have less to carry as well. The Allies actually need to PRODUCE supplies and fuel - not just bring it in from entry points - and a lot of the on map production is a long way from where it is needed. So to the extent the Allies will not automatically overwhelm due to sheer numbers - maybe Japan is more viable?

On the other hand, Japan had enough fuel and resources to last about 30 months, and the database is only big enough for about 6 months - SO in a strictly historical sense - this is not nice for Japan. Japan too will need to produce. But - as Parillo says [The Japanese Merchant Marine and World War Two] - "there is more than enough" - Japan in our game must be organized - or it will suffer the fate of the real historical Japan - only sooner.
