How Many of U have Upgraded Ongoing PBEMs to 1.8?

Post by The Duke »

My buddy and I are in May '43 in a good game.....we're at 1.6 (I think), and debating upgrading to 1.8......

However, I've seen a few threads that concern me w/ problems.....my question for the masses: would you recommend upgrading to 1.8 for an ongoing PBEM?

Yes. I upgraded 3 PBEMs. 2 were already out of synch and upgrading to 1.8 brought them back into synch.

I'm very pleased with 1.8. At this point my biggest gripes with WITP will probably have to be solved with WITP II :)

Note that there is a reported and confirmed bug with version 1.8 concerning battleship and cruiser float plane group maximum sizes.

A fix is being worked on.

Two games upgraded, one in 2/42 so not a great thing, but the other in 9/44 (1,5 years in real life). In this one we only had a handfull of turns since the upgrading but no problems so far. 1.8 seems to be ahead not only of 1.7xx, but also of 1.6 as far as I can tell.

One thing to note ...

Each turn you run with an older version causes additional corruption. Data once corrupt stays that way. There is no magic pill that with undo it.

J & Don have been doing great work to fix the various causes but at the same time, it simply prevents new corruption from happening. Yes, there were a few unexpected things that have caused them to quadruple the scope of what they were trying to fix, but it is getting fixed.

The longer you run backlevelled, the more of the data goes out the window permanently so it is really rather silly to not just keep a copy of your save & game version (in case there is a serious problem) and get on with the new version.

This has the additional advantage of possibly uncovering new issues while the people are available to actually take a look at the problem. You guys want stuff fixed, stop running backlevelled versions and get with the program of getting the current version perfect. Matrix has seen fit to donate additional resources to making this game better, it would be in your best interests to take advantage of this while it exists.
