Another US ship reported sunk (US Drum, hit by ASW ships in Japanese home waters). Things didn´t went well to Japan in the last day, as raids against Mandalay went piecemal, fortunately, the green enemy pilots weren´t able to shot down the Japanese bombers. A fighter sweep against PM resulted in some success (3 enemy fighters lost vs. no losses among Zeroes)

-Japanese air units are noticing increased air opposition over Kohima. Last raid resulted in the loss of 2 Zeroes, 1 Ki-43, 1 Ki-48 and 3 Ki-21. Nine enemy planes were destroyed, six of them in the ground. Japanese submarines are doing a good job in Coral Sea, damaging another AK, althought escorts inflicted light damage to I-2 in return. A sweep over PM resulted in 9 enemy fighters being shot down, against one Zero (lost to an Wirraway-the pilot tought it was an F4F and didn´t noticed the rear gun)

PM under attack

Post by Bombur »

-Another sweep over PM resulted in 4 Wirraways and 3 P-39 shot down. Two Zeroes lost. Japanese commanders in Lae asked Yamamoto for a pause in these operations, due to relatively high crew losses. One of our crews is worth 20 Wirraways, said the Tainan Daitai leader, unless we use all disposable means to neutralize Port Moresby, we will lose the air attrition battle.

Surprise!!!!

Post by Bombur »

-The Japanese fleet was retiring at crusing speed such was the confidence that PM was unable to launch air attacks. It was a surprise to us that 9 level bombers escorted by 32 fighters located and attacked Japanese carriers. Althought the enemy attack was easily repelled (with the loss of 22 planes), five Zeroes and the same number of pilots were lost to the enemy planes. Intel estimates that those planes were probably evacuated to Australia before the night bombardment and then returned to Australia in the following day. PM was operational only 36 hours after the big bombardment. Anyway, the whole operation was successful, with the enemy losing 54 planes against 5 Japanese.

No action...

Post by Bombur »

No action today, except for a brief sweep of the Lae boys over PM. Our pilots noticed significant increase of air opposition, but no planes were lost from either side. More worrying are estimates of 520000 men defendind PM, done by our air recon. Did we miss something????
