Release Countdown! TOAW 3 Feature Preview #6

Post by JAMiAM »

We're making a contest out of this feature preview. I wish I could give away a free game to the "lucky winner" but that would probably be pushing it...[;)]

Anyhow, look at the screenshot on this post, and the next one. Then test your TOAW Grognard Quotient, by correctly identifying the new features.

1 new feature spotted - Okay, you still leave fog on a mirror, and are not yet legally blind.[8D]
2 new features spotted - There's hope for you, but you might want to uninstall your copy of Teletubbies: From Bristol to Berlin, and start playing serious games again.[;)]
3 new features spotted - Good to see that you're still playing TOAW![:D]
4 new features spotted - Great eyes! The first to successfully list all four features in a single post will have their name immortalized as a terrain feature, or city, in my next introductory scenario.[&o]

Hi!

Seems you have a "formation icon"

You also appear to have a "tanks on top icon"

You show the turn progress at the bottom of the screen.

And you added to unit info.. proficiency, readiness, supply.

As all this, plus the TOAW logo middle right screen is changed to reflect TOAW III. And the Turn info is moved up. And is that a new terrain type east of Brookhaven on the river (swamp, marsh?), though with ISDN and set to not download graphics at optimal resolution hard to tell?

Pretty sure it's always said that. And the terrain General Staff is looking at is just cropland.

There's the other three (two?) pointed out by Jo (unit quality numbers and rounds remaining/used), plus I suspect the arrangement of stars around the TOAW III logo means something. Since there are ten of them, maybe it's something to do with rounds.

Anyway, the assistance with round management is certainly a very nice feature.

New interface art
Proficiency, readiness and supply in interface
Phases remaining and planned combats display

There is no 4th feature unless you count phases and planned combats as 2 items.

Fairly certain the stars around the logo have always indicated remaining combat rounds. Can't really check at the moment.

I don't think so. I just loaded up at turn that was part way through. All the stars are grey. At my usual resolution there aren't even enough stars.

A lot of close ones here. Between you all, you've identified them, but who will step forth and name them all, precisely, in a single post?

Will we be seeing "Crazy Dutchman Bay"?
Great Bend-on-Turner River?
Raised Lava Flats?
Amosville?
General Staff Airfield?
Czaroboskaya?

Or, something else, entirely?[:D]

The number of gold stars shows a setting of the new feature - a maximal number of rounds per battle.
Ralph - please, give my the composite units!

Well, let's see...

Image

1) The InfoBox went from the bottom to the top
2) The graphic changed, in TOAW2 it basically had no function, AFAIR it only displayed a rotating golden star when the PO was thinking
3) The Planed Combats/Turn Used info is new, in TOAW2 you had to remember all of that, or had to quickly plan a combat and check the turn-used grey boxes.
4) Is not new, its the rocky-tile graphic
5) Is new, earlier the info box wouldn't show this info, to get it you'd had to open the unit info box (which I did a lot!)
Oh, please, could you remove the new TOAW-Star graphic and replace it with a unit-info box which displays the equipment of the currently selected unit? Now, THAT would be great! Please?? PLEEEE.. HHEEEEEZZZZZZZ *looks with tears in eyes*
6) The right click for attack option is not new, as can be seen in this comparison

So, we have:
- new color (grey instead of green) (I liked the green better :P )
- info box has a new position
- info box displays additional informatins
- changed the star-graphics, probably with improved functionality
- added Planed Combats/Turn Used informations

Thats 5 changes out of the promised 4 new ones ;)

Stefan! You old dog! You got them all! The second bullet isn't really a "new feature" since it was just moved, from below the bolted panel, to above it, as you noted.

The improved functionality of the star circlet is a graphic approximation of the Turn Used, Planned Combats information. It also shows up during the PO's turn, which is nice since then you can see how the PO is spending its rounds.

So, when I incorporate your name into a terrain feature, do you want your real name, old nick (Kraut) or this new one?

Oh, and welcome back to the world of TOAW!

Hmm, I like Kraut, back in DnO, I usually planed of renaming Moscow to Krautstadt after I've defeated the big red bear, so if you could slip in a Krautstadt here or there, that would be great :D

Oh, and I'm not really 'back' yet, as I still have to find the time to play TOAW again, but I will have a very close look at TOAW III that's for sure :)

Can you rename cites? If you can't, it's a great idea for the next version[&o]

It sounds easy to implement, has absolutely no functionality, but it would help some people get sucked in. It would be great for taunting in PBEM games too.

As of now, you can't rename on-map features while playing, be them cities, rivers or else. It's all set in stone by the designer in the editor.
