OT - Turn Based Modern Naval Combat

Post by SwampYankee68 »

First I'll appologize for the thread placement - I'm hoping the OT will warn off people who don't want to read about something not Harpoon.

I was hoping that someday I'd see a modern Naval combat game that was turn based, that could be played by email.

I'm just hpoing that someone who makes the design decisions sees this, I guess.

This is probably digging back but Fleet series had a computer version (5th Fleet IIRC). IIRC the board game translated well into a video game. Would probably be a good one to have around again as well[:)]

If you are open to paper rules and miniatures, why don't you check out the Harpoon4.1 system?

There are quite a few sites catering to it.

Check out Admiralty Trilogy, H4_Zulu_Station, Harpoon4 on the Yahoo groups.

There is also a discussion forum on HarpGamer.com

Fleet command, yes. I don't know if I could get it to run on a newer machine, I think it was DOS. But, wouldn't that make for a great remake?

Edit: Miniatures....I do appreciate the suggestion but with kids and dogs, I don't see that happening! [:D]

I played Harpoon 3 (the GDW book edition) with only pen and paper. It is very doable, if, of course, you have some friends to play with "live".

Actually, a long time ago (thinking back to GEnie long time ago) I hosted a convoy defense against an attack Soviet submarine online. I did it with a battle area marker that I referenced all locations to. Worked quite well and used the Harpoon system of rules.

Fleet Command runs under XP - there is a patch specifically for that purpose.

I think that NWS is working on a new game that might fit the bill, far off though, I think.
