Pearl Harbor

126 Val and 143 Kate, escorted by 76 Zero, launched by 6 japanese carriers north west of Hawaii, attacked this morning the US base of Pearl Harbor, in Oahu island, Hawaii.
After the dramatic attack, during wich the japanese lost only 5 Val and Kate (but 9 Zero, 55 Val and 32 Kate resulted damaged), the US Fleet took tremendous hits.

Wake I.

A small japanese TF approached to Wake and landed naval infantry troops. Coastal defense guns returned fire and damaged CL Tatsuta


Malaya

Japanese bombers attacked Kota Bharu airport. Only 1 Hudson destroyed on the ground. No japanese losses.
The attacker returned in the afternoon and they didn’t encountered opposition.
But the airfield was still operational and in the late afternoon 3 Hudson attacked BB Kongo, part of the escort of the convoy that transported the troops landing in Malaya. No bomb hit.
Another 6 Hudson and 7 Blenheim came from Kuantan but they missed all the targets.

At the same time, 97 Nell and 27 Betty attacked Singapore airport, hitting with 3 torpedoes and 3 bombs CL Mauritius, DD Jupiter and DD Stronghold with 1 bomb each and MSW Ballarat with 2 torpedoes. The Ballarat sunk in the afternoon.
Air losses for the japs are 1 Betty destroyed and 2 damaged, and 18 Nell damaged.
The brits suffered the loss of 2 Vildebeest; 9 Buffalo are damaged.

BB Kongo and BB Haruna, with escort shelled Kota Bharu beaches, covering the landing of japanese troops, and killing 842 men and destroying 24 guns.


Philippines

87 bombers escorted by 49 Zero struck Clark Field airport.
Only 4 planes damaged for the japanese aviation, while the allied lost 6 P-26, 6 P-35, 6 P-40B, 4 P-40E and 2 B-17C


Notes

All the planned landing took places. The heaviest losses have been registered in Kuching (Borneo), Kota Bharu, Vigan, Lingayen and Davao, due to coastal guns.

Tarawa atoll has been quickly occupied by the 900 marines landed.
Also Batan I. has been occupied, and 989 prisoners have been captured.
Para troops dropped in Puerto Princesa occupied the base and the AVD Heron has been scuttled to prevent capture.

At Wake the japanese marines reduced the fortification to zero. They will probably conquer the atoll tomorro.

ANALISYS OF 1ST TURN


Central Pacific

I hoped to occupy Wake immediately and this event didn't occur. We'll see in the second turn.

Convoys en route to Midway are 21 hexes away. At full speed of AP's, I need 7 more days to reach the target (2+2 movements).

The close escort is assured by CVL Zuiho and CVE Taiyo (42 a/c), with BB Fuso and BB Yamashiro, CL Kinu and 5 DD.
In addition, one bombardement TF is escorting the convoys. The TF is formed by BBs Nagato, Mutsu, Ise and Hyuga, CL Kitakami and CL Oi, CS Chiyoda and 7 DD. This TF will speed up when the convoy will be 2 days from target, to soft the enemy defenses.
CS Chiyoda will be detached and will join 3 DDs coming from Japan.
But this convoys are transporting only the 5. Base Force.

South of those ships, there is the main invasion force, composed by the South Seas Detachment, and escorted by a bombardement TF composed by 4 CA and 4 DD.
It’s a bit risky, but I hope that the northern force will focalize the attention of Chuck, leaving the main invasion force in peace.

About KB, after long thought, I’ve decided to not proceed with a second attack. I’m sending the 6 CV west, south of Midway I.


Southwest Pacific

Two convoys will be in danger tomorrow. One heading towards Buna and the other towards Lae. They are respectively 1 and 2 hexes away. They will reach the objective but they will be under air attack of planes coming from Port Moresby.

Malaya-Northern Borneo

I didn’t catch the Prince of Wales or Repulse in Singapore harbor. Maybe thei are at sea ready to attack troops convoys.
The ships that are in more dangerous situation are those ancored at Singkawang (Borneo). If those big ships will attack during the night (as I suppose they will do), it will be a massacre.

Also at Kuching (Borneo) the situation could be dramatic if the british capital ships attack. The 35. Infantry Brigade is unloading unescorted.

There is not too much that I can do. Supposing that Chuck will not send is precious ships north, in the Khota Bharu area, I could send south the TF with BB Kongo and BB Haruna. In a night battle against PoW and R they will probably loose but maybe they will save precious troops. The problem are the british in Malaya. They didn’t score a single hit during the first day but my lucky could end tomorrow. Anyway is the only possible solution. The ships under the command of Vadm. Kondo have been ordered to heading to Kuching at max speed. I will risk the ships and troops at Singkawang. An entire infantry brigade is more important.
The only help that I can send to Singkawang are 2 subs coming from Singapore area. Others subs sailing between Indochina and Malaya are ordered to head south.

Borneo

Three convoys are two hexes from Tarakan. In that port is reported one CA. It could be a disaster if he will sort to meet my convoys. As escort for all the ships I have only 4 DD, 1 MSW and some PC and PG. CVL Ryujo battle group will then move in the middle of the Celebes Sea, hoping her Kate will be enough to stop enemy surface ships.

NIGHT PHASE


The landing of my troops continued everywhere during the night.

Philippines

I-124 sunk with 1 torpedo the US MSW Bittern, W of Manila.
Allied SS are patrolling northern shore of Luzon. 1 AP is badly damaged at Laoag.
In the Celebes Sea, AVD William Preston has been intercepted by the TF leaded by CVL Ryujo. The 3 CA that escorted the light carrier sunk the AVD in few minuts.

At Lingayen 4 DD attacked my ships at anchor, but were forced to break off. DD John Ford leaved the area on fire.
Later 6 PT attacked and sunk one AK.

At Laoag two other DD tried also to surprise my merchant ships but, despite sinking one MSW, they were not able to attack them and leaved the area without other result.

At Jolo the most dangerous enemy ship reported in the area, the CA Houston, attacked the ships at anchor, while unloading. The US cruiser sunk one MSW and 1 PC, and seriously damaged DD Hatsukaze. But my DD managed to hit with one torpedo the enemy cruiser, that leaved the area on fire and listing.

CL Boise attacked one AP escorted by one MSW at Zamboanga. The MSW fought heroically and sunk, but his mission, save the merchant ship, was a success. However the AP is badly damaged.


Borneo

As I supposed Prince of Wales and Repulse attacked my ships a Kuching. It was a massacre, with 3 AP and 1 AK sunk.

At Singkawank Chuck sent DD Vendetta and Vimpire, but they were forced to break off by the light escort. DD Vampire has been hit seriously, and one of my PG too.
Later in the night CL Tromp attacked again and sunk one AK.

At Brunei SS O-20 sunk one of my AP in the harbor. I think the same SS layed some mines that were detected by my MSW in the morning.
At Tarakan my convoy reached the enemy base. CL Marblehead and 5 DD were ther to wait for mz ships. My 2 DD did a great job and saved the merchant troops, sinking also the DD Stewart.
One hour later the allied ships returned agains, and sunk 1 PG and 1 AP. I’ve lost only 31 soldiers. The rest have been rescued by other ships.

South West Pac

My ships reached Lae and Buna and the troops began to land.


DAY PHASE


Borneo

SS KXIV hit another AP in the harbor. My escort seems to be on vacation.
Another AP hit by enemy bombers coming from Tarakan. I hope to open a fighter base in Brunei asap.

In the morning at Kuching, PoW and Repulse attacked again. The TF with Kongo and Haruna were still 2 hexes away, at NW, so the merchant ships were alone. At the end of the battle, six of them resulted heavz damaged.

During the afternoon my troops occupied Miri and Jesselton.

Philippines

At Lingayen one more AP hit by an enemy SS.

Clark Field air base has been demolished today by 82 jap bombers. My pilots didn’t see any allied plane in the sky. We suffered only 3 damaged bombers. No losses.

However, 35 US fighters took-off from Manila and tryed to attack my ships at Vigan, without success. Manila will be the target of tomorrow.

At Jolo one dutch SS placed one torpedo against one AK.
In the afternoon mz troops conquered the island, capturing 927 prisoners.

Taytay, in Palawan I. is conquered by japanese paratroops.


Luzon:

Aparri is captured, as well as Laoag (1259 allied prisoners) and Lingayen.
At Vigan the fort is reduced to 1.


Mindanao:

At Cotabato Sasebo 2. SNLF reduced the fort to 1.
Instead Cagayan is occupied and 512 allied soldiers have been captured.
Also Zamboanga, Butuan and Dadjangas falled in japanese hands during the afternoon.



Leyte:

The two important location, Ormoc in the north and Tacloban in the south, have been quickly occupied. The entire island of Leyte is now under japanese control.


Panay:

Roxas is occupied by japanese troops.


Hong Kong

Chuck began immediately with his tactic to move around the planes at his disposal. 12 Blenhheim attacked my bases at the Pescadores without result. 7 of them resulted damaged.
He placed there also 10 AVG’s P-40 that fought against my planes that attacked the british colony, shoting down 3 Sonia. 5 P-40 have been damaged.

China

7 Il-4 attacked Shangai port, scoring no hit.


Malaya

Khota Bahru afld has been severly damaged again today, by my planes taking-off from Saigon.

Also Singapore airport has been bombed today, by 96 bombers. 12 Buffalo on CAP intercepted them but they were not able to shot down even one. 16 bombers resulted damaged and as all the Buffalo has weel.

British planes scored hit at Khota Bharu, hitting 1 AP with bombs and sunk 1 AK with torpedoes at Singora.

DEI

At Manado the Kure 1. SNLF reduced the dutch fort to 1.


SW PAC

Dagua, in New Guinea, is captured by the 66. Nav Gd, and Gasmata by the 4. NLF.
In New Ireland Kavieng is quickly occupied and the airbase building started immediately.


CENT PAC

The big news of the day, in Central Pacific, is the conquest of Wake Atoll. The US prisoners are 1783.

Also Guam, in the Marianas, is now under japanese control.

ANALISYS OF 2nd TURN


China

At Hong Kong the 38. division, with 104. division and support units, reached the british colony. They will attack tomorrow.

Malaya

The unloading of my troops in Singora and Khota Bharu is proceeding, always too slow.

Borneo

The TF with Kongo and Haruna is 2 hexes NW of Kuching. Maybe it’s better that they didn’t reach the enemy, because I forgot to switch the mission from Bombardement to Surface Combat. If they could reach PoW and Repulse now maybe they could be on the bottom.
Now I have to decide were to send them. PoW and R are 1 hex SE. I don’t think they will sail to Kuching again, but I I will leave them on course to Kuching.
Anyway the 35. Bde is on the ground and tomorrow will attack the base.

Philippines

Jolo afld is operational. I’ve transferred there already a daitai of Nell and a daitai of Ann.

NIGHT PHASE

Borneo

SS I-122 tried to attack BC Repulse near Singkawang, but was forced to flee.


Malaya

SS O19 attacked my troops ships anchored at Khota Bharu but took 3 hits from my escorts.


South Pac

CA Louisville attacked my two merchant ships unloading in Tarawa. CL Katori and 4 PG ran up to fight.
Louisville managed to hit immediately one AK and one PG but the gunners on Katori started to hit the US cruiser. The extensive night practice done before the war helped a lot. After one hour of fighting, CA Louisville sunk, hit around 100 of times,by the guns of Katori and of 4 PG. Two of the PG resulted damaged, but not too heavy.


DAY PHASE

Borneo

While the escort ships cleared the sea by the allied mines, japs troops landed in this important base. The allied warships leaved the harbor during the night.

Tarakan: dutch bombers attacked my ships and hit with one torpedo one of my AP.

Malaya

SS O19 managed to hit with one torpedo one of my AK off Khota Bharu. The escort hit then the SS and I suppose he’s badly damaged.

My air force attacked again the main airports in Malaya. Over Singapore I’ve lost 3 Nell and the damages are minimal.

BB Kongo received one bomb in the afternoon, launched by a Martin, however

Another of my AP torpedoed in the Samar Sea, but she should be able to go back to homeport.
A Val Chutai in Vigan hit with 3 bombs DD John Ford in Manila Harbor.


SW Pac

Two AP have been badly damaged by Hudson coming from Rabaul, on the way home.

Celebers Sea

Kate of my 2 small CV in the zone, sunk with 3 torpedoes one AK

Cent Pac

AK Mauna Loa is damaged with 2 torpedoes by SS I-6 NE of Oahu.


Ground Combat

Celebes: Manado is occupied.

Philippines, Mindanao: Cotabato occupied, and 597 allied soldiers captured
Davao is conquered by the 56. Brigade. 2651 enemy prisoners took.
Mindanao island is now completely under japanese control.
Luzon: Vigan occupied. All the four objective in the northern part of Luzon have been
reached.
SW Pac: Buna and Lae occupied. Now I have to wait that the B.F. reach those base from Japan.

Brunei: the important base of Brunei is occupied
Also Tarakan is occupied. This is important, because from there I can attack enemy airports
In SE of Borneo and the Celebes.
Singkawang: the fort is reduced to 1

ANALISYS OF 3rd TURN


China

At Hong Kong my units are a bit low on supplies. For the next attack I’ll wait unitl the 23. Army HQ will draw more of them to the british colony. In the next turn I’ll bombard the enemy units.

Brunei

I start immediately to transport the 12. Base Force from Saigon to Kuching, to open the airfield.

The 28. NLF is ordered to march from Jesselton to Sandakan.

The oil plants in Brunei are really in a bad condition: 252 out of 300 destroyed.
The airfield is operational. I’ve transferred there one sentai of Oscar and two of Nate.

CVL Ryujo and CVE Hosho joined themselves in the Celebes Sea. Now the two small carriers will continue to operate together.

Central Pacific

KB is now SE of Midway and is ordered to head north. I want to refuel before Operation MI begin, and the tanker are NE of the atoll.
The invasion fleet is still one week away, so I have all the time I need to do it.

Philippines

Luzon: I’ll wait until all the merchant ships finish to unload the supplies before ordering to my units to move south.

Mindanao: I prepare to evacuate all the small infantry units from the island. I will transport them to Palau and from there use them to occupy all the small bases in the DEI.
Most of the goals of the first phase are achieved. To complete it I have to occupy Khota Bharu, Tavoy, Victoria Point, Singkaviang, Sandakan and Midway.
After will start the second phase, the movements towards the inland enemy bases.

Borneo

DD Scout and DD Thanet attacked one AK north of Kuching. Damages are minimal.
One previously damaged AP sunk tonight at Kuching.

Philippines

One AP is torpedoed by S-39 S of Tacloban

Chuck sent CL Adelaide to shell Buna. Maybe he hoped to find some merchant ships there, but they already left.


DAY PHASE

Malaya

Alor Star afld has been heavily bombed today, by my planes that took-off from Kompong Som. I’ve lost only 1 Sally. One Buffalo resulted destroyed.

Over Singapore my bombers arrived without Zero escort. Again!!
I can’t understand why. So, I suffered the loss of 3 Nell and 1 Betty, and another 26 bombers resulted damaged.
Only 1 Buffalo shot down and 12 allied fighters damaged. The damage to the afld are light.

Philippines

15 bombers damaged over Manila in an attempt to surprise the AVG. But only 1 P-40 has been destroyed on the ground.

At Lingayen US PT placed 2 topredoes on one of my AK.

DD Suzukaze took 1 torpedo S of Taclobam launched, again by S-39.

Cent Pac

Bad bad news from there. US planes attacked the tanker convoy of KB!!!
DD Akebono and TK Toei Maru sunk.

South of Hilo, SS I-9 scored 2 torpedo hits on AD Dobbin.

SW Pac

One AK is sunk S of Rabaul, on a way home to Truk.

China

At Hong Kong fort has been reduced to 4.

Borneo

The last objective of the first phase in Borneo has been achieved. Singkawang is conquered.

ANALISYS OF 4th TURN

Central Pacific

The situation of the replenishment task force is really bad. 1 TK and 1 DD are sunk.
Two will sunk tomorrow, two others are in a very badly conditions, other two are badly damaged and only one, with DD Ushio is safe and witl all the fuel on board. Those two ships are heading south as quickly as possible.
KB will sprint at full speed to a position N of Midway. I hope to come close enough to attack the enemy CV. But maybe Chuck will retire her NE.
From Kwajalein I have 2 AO coming to refuel.

On the other fronts everythings is going as planned. The only problem that I have, at the moment are around Midway, as I supposed.

At Menado a dutch surface TF attacked my merchant ships at anchor. 1 AP and 1 PG sunk and 1 AK damaged. The dutch DD Kortenaer took 4 hits and is also on fire.

The US PT attacked again in Lingayen and sunk MSW Rokko Maru and one AK.

One US SS is damaged at Aparri.


DAY PHASE

Central Pacific

Kido Butai has been discovered by a PBY flying from Midway.
Another PBY spotted the invasion fleet NW of the atoll.

SS I-168 is sunk E of Oahu.


Malaya

126 bombers attacked Alor Star afld destroying 2 Vildebeest on the ground. No losses for me.

In the afternoon my troops launched an assault to Khota Bharu and forced the defenders to abandon the city that is now in japanese hands.

Aitape, in New Guinea, is occupied.

I do read other AAR's but naturally tend to pay the most attention to Nikmod AAR's to see how its working. These days i'm rather pressed for time and often won't comment much. Its good to let people know at times though that others are reading them so that they keep posting updates. [&o]
