RE: Bombardment

Post by Nikademus »

The recent operations conducted by the Imperial Japanese navy only served to underscore the postion by SouthPac that extreme caution must be used when considering any operations for the immediate future. While certainly stung, and up till now thwarted from increasing their sphere of influence in the Coral Sea, the initiative nevertheless still rests with Japan and Allied commanders must remain wary and viligent for any sign of future Japanese thrusts...defensive or offensive in this region (or others). Rabaul remains a hotbed of naval land based air activity as well and is still capable of putting a large number of bombers and fighters into the air....enough to swamp Port Morosby's fighter defenses, but not without cost.

New Guneau remains dominated by local Allied airpower. The advanced bomber base at Lae remains empty, serviced only by small barges. The enemy has not attempted a major resupply since suffering major damage on it's last attempt.

SWPacific of course, disagreed with this assessment, citing Japanese timidity and unwillingness to operate under local Allied LBA superiority. Plans for an early advance on New Britian remain on the table.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/19/42

A question was asked to IJN leadership in the last meeting:

-What is Nik planning????

1-How to surrender
2-How to use the wonderful new P-38´s he received
3-A surprise strike in Central Pacific using his remaining carriers
4-Unrestricted submarine warfare against Japanese shipping in the SRA
5-How to make the B-17 carry torpedoes
6-An all out offensive in New Guinea
7-A night surface raid against Rabaul
8-He is planning nothing, just complaining that the game is unfair as carrier ressurection takes 18 months
9-How to confiscate all reserves of sake when he reaches Tokyo

Letter to Yamamoto

Post by Bombur »

-The following letter was sent to the Japanese Navy HQ in Tokyo.

-Dear Admiral Yamamoto, CinC of IJN

Given your coward behaviour since the 2nd battle of Coral Sea, I´m forced to warn you about some serious concerns.
1-If you didn´t notice, you´re winning the war
2-As the provisional winner, you have the obligation to keep your forces in the offensive, according to Bushido code
3-Your failure to do so is a shame and a dishonour to you. If you eventually dies, how will you be able to face your ancestrals?
4-The Japanese failure to keep the offensive is having disturbing effects among our troops, as the inactivity in our fronts is harming their morale. Our soldiers are spending their free time drinking bear and going after South Pacific girls. Hopefully, the same is happening with your troops.
5-We have prepared lots of new toys to welcome you in the next offensive. If you fail to do so, we will be hardly pressed to explain the American taxpayer why we are spending all those US$ in Hellcats and other US made wonders
6-Considering all these things, I urge you to fulfill your obligations of an evil nation

Regards

Admiral King "sink us"

Lae bombed to stone age. Local commanders requesting more flak. How those B-17´s are flying at 8000 feet undisturbed, said one of the Zuikaku boys after he heard the news. On the bright side, the increased air activity is costing the enemy a significant number of aircraft. Intel reports 3 bombers lost over New Guinea (1 Wirrawy, 1 B-25 and 1 B-17)

Bloodbath over Mandalay

Post by Bombur »

-And also air action over China. Allied losses were 50 planes vs. 34 for Japanese. Enemy planes were decimated by Mandalay air defenses again. Losses in A2A were 32 Hurricanes and 3 Blenheims, against 10 Oscars (and no Tojos!). Unfortunately, the enemy air raids destroyed 10 Oscars and 10 Tojos in the ground, thus resulting in a draw (of course, Japanese aircrews losses were smaller). Our forces paid back the allies with two raids on Wuchow, destroying 8 chinese bombers in the ground. For some reason, the enemy had no CAP over Wuchow....the excellent performance of the Ki-44 in A2A (up to now they have a 5:1 kill rate) is prompting many pilots to ask for a faster upgrade for Oscar units. Unfortunately, the Tojo production, currently at 124 units/month isn´t probably enough to allow a faster conversion, and, anyway, there is still some doubt on the superiority of thr newer fighter.

Burma again...

Post by Bombur »

-A bad day for Japan over Burma. Tojos again saved the day against the Hurricanes, but the overall score was only 3x0, however, 7 more planes were destroyed in the ground. Meanwhile a bombardment mission against Gilli gilli resulted in 3 DD damaged against 2 PT, 1 P-40 and 2 Wirraway destroyed in the ground....Yamamoto asked himself if it was a good idea.....

Horrendous bloodbath...

Post by Bombur »

-Japanese fighters achieved an important air victory over Mandalay, by shooting down 36 Hurricanes and 2 Beauforts, losing only 1 Oscar and 3 Zeroes. Unfortunately, the enemy bombers destroyed 25 fighters in the ground. Overall losses for the turn were 42 for Allies and 33 for Japan. JAAF is growing worried with the heavy losses in the Burma front and requested additional help to the Navy. It´s uncertain to what extent additional Zeroes will be commited to the Burma defense, as the Navy is already having some troubles in the New Guinea Front....

-Enemy fighters are so scared that they flee from our Zeroes and Oscars as soon they see them. Unfortunately, losses suffered in the last days depleted our fighters groups in Mandalay, making them less effective. The enemy lost 11 panes to A2A, including 2 B-25´s, but destroyed 27 planes (22 in the ground and 5 in Air combat). Overall losses were 18 to Allied and 28 to Japan. An effort will be made to boost air defenses over Burma, as the enemy fighters are close to exaustion too....
-Some worrying news, enemy submarine activity in SoPac in increasing. One AK lost and one PG heavily damaged in the last turns (4 days). Canton is about to be attacked. Intel located 32 units in the area

RE: Nik won this one

Post by Nikademus »

The grueling attrition war continues over Burma. Allied forces appear to be getting the upper hand slowly but surely though as bomber squadrons from several UK bases, aided by the heroic actions of the outclassed Hurricane escorts, batter their way through to plaster the airfields around Mandalay. Many Japanese fighters have been reported destroyed on the ground as a result balancing the heavy losses suffered in the air by the crack Sentais of the 5th Division.

Recent skirmishes though indicate that the Japanese army pilots are tiring....Hurricane pilots are beginning to score more and more successes in the air.

Message from the CinC of Japanese forces in Burma.

-After decimating enemy forces, our fighters and the respctive crews were provisionally evacuated from Mandalay. The evacuation order was issued in order to allow rest and refit for fighter Sentais. The upgrade to the better Ki-44 is being considered for at least two Sentais. We also consider that the enemy forces were effectively rendered unable for further offensive, as it is demonstrated by the insignificant damage inflicted by last attacks, and to their inability to offer fighter opposition against a raid on Akyab. We are happy to see that crew losses in the last days over Burma were negligible and we just need to replace the planes (however, we have a small trouble with the evacuation of Mandalay, as we have many "planeless" pilots)

Yamamoto to CinC of Japanese forces in Burma:

@##$$#$@##@@@####$!!!! How do you dare to sacrifice our Betties in low level attacks on Akyab. Do you think that the exchange of 7 Betties and their crews for one Beaufort is a great business to the empire?????[:@]

Message from Buna commander to Rabaul commander

-If we lose 4 barges each day, we will be in deep trouble, why don´t you bring the Tokyo express???

The battle for Canton

Post by Bombur »

-The assault on Canton started yesterday and was easily repulsed, with a 20:1 casualty rate. The battle of Canton also involved an attempt by US mercenaries (the so called Flying Tigers)and Chinese bombers to gain air superiority over the battle fields. Again the enemies were defeated, with the loss of 16 P-40 and 6 Chinese bombers, while the defenders lost 8 Oscars and 5 Ki-44. In another development, the JAAF speaker declared yesterday that the production lines of the Ki-43Ib were closed. According to him, a new version of the Ki-43, faster and less vulnerable, while retaining its agility, will replace the older model. Some of the production lines will also be changed to produce the Ki-44. We expect the Ki-43II and the Ki-44 will be able to defeate any plane the allied can field until mid 44. In an unconfirmed report, however, JAAF pilots weren´t happy with the new plane. A pilot of the 77th Sentai, who tested the plane, was said to have complained the the Ki-43II is only a marginal improvement over the older version and its two 0.5 in guns are clearly not adequate to deal with armored allied planes. "We usually spend all of our anmo on a B-25 and it still can return to base", said him "Nakajima engineers should be forced to fly with us the air defense missions over Burma".
