More Allied AP Ship Graphics

Post by JWE »

Howdy,

Just a little preview of the CHS Allied APs. These are the "Fancy" models, with the more prosaic to come. I sent these to Fremen for inclusion in "Fremen's Shipyard". This is for those of you that just can't wait for the finished set to be posted. I hope Fremen can make use of these.

The full CHS set should be finished in a week or so, then off to Spooky & Rogue. Fremen, if you see this, please feel free to pull anything of mine down into your shipyard. I have no ego about this; take what you want.

The ships are, from the top: Aquitania (nothin more need be said), Manoora (Aussie AMC/LSI, with several near sisters including Westralia), Highland Brigade (a 14,000 GT ship built for Nelson Line with 4 sisters in the "Highland" class; well used troopers), Warwick Castle (a beaut, often used as a trooper to India and beyond), and Derbyshire (member of the "Shire" class of 6 ships, also used as a trooper to India and beyond).

Hope you all like. Ciao.

FREMEN

You know, I haven't really thought about camo. I did the US AP/AK ships in standard Measure 13 or Measure 14 because I hadn't seen too many with a Thayer pattern or even a graded Measure 22. It's a lot worse for the Allies since I have no idea what patterns they used in the Pac. I've seen pics of Kanimbla, for example (Aussie LSI) at the Tarakan op where she was a solid Measure 14. Some of the KPM vessels humping troops to Moresby in '42 were still in house livery; black hull, yellow cove stripe, light grey superstructure, etc.. Later war I'm guessing that the US and Allied ships in SWPOA were painted to general USN standards, but I really don't know.

I'm really in the dark about Brit camo schemes in South East Asia Command. Maybe Lord Louie required everyone to use Mountbatten Pink?[;)]

If anyone out there has any suggestions, I would be very happy to add some "color". Ciao.

I, for one, am not in favor of too much camo. Considering the small size of the icons available, I'd rather have something that is easy to identify. The purpose of camo, after all, is to make the ship hard to recognize. And the purpose of the icon is to recognize the ship.

I tend to agree with Don. The site that Cobra turned me on to (many thanks) has the AP/AKs in Measure 31, 32 and 33 dazzle patterns in '43 & beyond. I don't know how a "pattern" will effect the overall impact of a ship profile.

It may be possible to do some sort of "Western Approaches" camo scheme. I did the Klipfontein, below, in her standard house livery and replicated her with a Brit B5 hull and 507C topsides. Maybe pattern camo is best for warships, leaving the poor miserable auxiliaries to more prosaic paint jobs. Don't know. I'll try some and see how they turn out.

Ciao.
