Aha! I knew it!

Post by Grand_Armee »

After months of playing, I finally broke down and played Spain. I have noticed before, and stated before, that this game seems to love the hell outta the Spanish.

So, I started the 1792 campaign as Spain. On the first turn, I DOW'd France. A couple of turns later, I lost my first battle to the French. Thereafter I formed an alliance with Austria, and together, Austria, Prussia, and Spain caused France to surrender to all three.

In the meantime, Prussia had been forced to surrender to Russia.

Shortly after the peace, Russia dow'd Saxony. Saxony asks Spain...the nation with the crappiest troops and the poorest economy to become it's protector. We accept because as Spain...we have no money...and That Saxon corps will be helpful since we can't build a corps yet.

A couple of turns later Poland asks for the same despite the fact that it's covered with Russian troops who are eager to get at Spain. Again, Spain accepts.

Spain had sent no diplomatic mission to Poland or Saxony. Spain had no trade with Poland or Saxony. Spain had sent no subsidies to either country.

I've played every other country, experimenting in various ways to get the allegiance of Saxony and Poland without attacking them outright. Never have they come so easy.

This, I feel is some bogus Programming since Spain had proven way back during the war of Austrian Succession that it couldn't even manage a force of 40K men in Northern Italy.

Quality horses? Where'd that idea come from? Every historian who's written about the period wrote that Spain's cavalry had been ruined by too many years of mule breeding.

Some things need cleaning up. One is the power of Spain. Another is the paltry amount of cavalry given to Prussia in this scenario.

I hope these things will be fixed in the final mod.

I still love this game. Nothing else is comparable. But, please clean up these things.

We have an official alternate Prussian scenario with increased cavalry. If you go to our website (www.west-civ.com) and look in the Downloads section it should be there.

For what it's worth, Napoleon's horse, whose bones are entombed in the Museum of Natural History in Paris, is a Spanish horse. La Guérinière, the head of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna in the mid to late 18th century, considered Spanish horses to be best suited for war because of their "natural courage and obedience." That's the source of my making Spain start with the Quality Horses upgrade. It's easy to mod nations' starting upgrades if you want to eliminate this.

Our current plans for a features patch for COG would be to add data tables that would force the game to conform to more historical parameters. For instance, we would have a data table that would forbid countries from becoming protectorates of the listed nations, and perhaps have a list of provinces into which nations cannot move their troops. Similarly, we might add a data table that would forbid certain relationships between listed nations.
