Having Fun

Post by Arjuna »

Hi all,

It's part of my sorry duty to replay the Advanced Tutorial incorporating all the changes made since we originally designed it six months ago. It's a tough job but someone's got to do it.[;)]

It's the morning of Day 3 and the Allied counter offensive is just starting to bite hard. For two days the valiant 19th Australian Inf Bde have been fighting a hold and delay operation against superior German panzer and infantry forces. The German 33rd Pz Regt came perilously close to seizing its objective - the Yef Alamanas crossing of the Sperkhios River in Greece.

Unfortunately for them the jig is up. The 2/8th Inf Bn of the 19 Bde was relieved late on Day 2 when the 1st UK Arm Bde stormed across the Komma bridge in the north-west. This enabled me to shuffle across the 16th Bde in the early evening and launch a dawn attack south east into Anthilli. This has just booted the 33rd Pz Regt HQ out of the town and they have decided to call off their attack and run back to Lamia in the north.

But I have committed the 4th Hussars Lt Tank Regt to seize the Eastern Marshes and cut off their escape route. In the meantime I ordered the 17th Bde to cross over at Komma and launch a major assault on Lamia.

Oh the joy of a well executed plan.[:)]

First time one of your plans actually worked ? [:D]

Me, I keep looking if there's a "Dumb AI down" option ... somewhere ... surely there must be one ...

Day 4 and the big assault on Lamia progresses. The 17th Bde's attack has just about run out of puff. It's 2/6th Bn is being repulsed from the endge of town. Thankfully, the 16th Bde is formed up behind it and just about to commence their assault. The German defenders are being hammered here but fight on grimly for the town. The 1st Arm Bde is forming up in the east and will deliver the knockoput blow.

Lamia is liberated and the defenders enveloped. The piece de resistance was the envelopment by the 2/8th Inf Bn on the western side of the town, which has trapped the defenders fleeing from the combined fury of three brigades attacking.

It's a sad sight to see routing units with nowhere to fall back to, left to spin their wheels halfway off the map. Hopefully there aren't too many scenarios with major objectives near map edges.

That gets me to wondering...
Do retreating units know to stop and regroup at the map edge or do they indeed spin their wheels without the knowledge that they can't retreat any farther?

Arjuna, I assume you've noticed this, but in case you didn't, in the last screenshot (the battle result screen) the Decisive Victory "stamp" obscures the text under it so that the text becomes hard to read. I think the stamp should be under the text and not vice versa.

Also, the signature of Wavell has odd looking white spaces which, I think, shouldn't squirm quite like that.

Wait till you see the animation. It's not visible in a static shot, but the stamp is added after a few second on the letter : first the letter appear then it is "stamped" with the victory (or defeat) message. So, the stamp should be above the text, not under.

I agree. It's a bit odd. I believe it comes from the fact it is now moddable, hence a separate graphic file added to the paper letter image. But color/transparency can be better managed there.

Note to Arjuna : if you delay the release of the game because of this, you'll be responsible for worldwide riots. [:'(]
