I decided to conduct a fighter sweep over Chungking in order to see how the Oscars would do versus the weaker Soviet fighters. It looks pretty good for the Oscars. Three are lost in return for 28 Chinese fighters. So, when it comes time to destroy Chungking there shouldn't be much problem.

Heavy bombers are proving extremely effective against enemy armoured formations. This is actually quite realistic since it is easier to damage 5% of the tanks in a force than 5% of the infantry if you catch them in constricted terrain. I'm not sure that the bombing results when attacking formations in fortifications are as realistic as one might wish though.

The slow death of the Japanese forces on Canton Island continues. Worth the price though given the information gathered. I have changed my defensive dispositions radically with massive reinforcements being rushed to various fortresses and a fairly radical modification of the strategic defensive plan. In particular the planned mix of acceptances of engagements and declinations of engagement ( especially the latter) has undergone extensive modification.

Forces from Australia certainly seem to be trying to attrit Koepang. I've been extremely careful to avoid any hint that I'm expecting an attack from Australia and even once when Trey and I were chatting about his offensive plans and he commented that it would be either "Johnston, Midway or Amchitka" I responded only by pointing out that he had ommitted Palmyra [:D]. Cue much banter about the point that it was a good PsyOps trick etc etc and continued "ignorance" of the threat on the Koepang axis.
My preparations for an attack on Koepang are well-advanced and once I see enemy shipping gathering in northern Australian ports I will transfer the necessary airpower into the area. The landing will not be prevented but its very success will be used to engage in asymmetric attrition on terms favourable to Japanese forces. There is much more to winning the war than holding the ground or defeating enemy troops on the field and it is eminently possible to exploit a defeat more fully than one's opponent can exploit his "victory". Koepang will be an example of this.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!
Strange. While I took care not to cut off the enemy path of retreat only a few of the enemy units actually retreated. More than 3/4 of the enemy force remained in Kweiyang. The only thing I can think of is that the units which were forced to retreat had no fortifications and therefore were pushed out by the 2:1 combat odds while the units which did have fortifications were able to withstand the 2:1 odds as they had forts to help prevent a forced retreat. I will rest and then try deliberate attacks to wear down the remainders such that they will be unable to hold in the mountains west of Kweiyang.

Surface TF reactions. Just to clarify this... Are you saying that I must not only own the hex the Allied ships are in but must have a unit based there for the surface TF to react? Just wondering as I have some surface TFs within range of undefended hexes which I'm sure Trey would like to use for fighter bases and had thought that simply "owning" them would guarantee a reaction.
Hi, I think it is enough to make the dots turn red by stepping on them. Then have TF set to react with the required range setting and speed. TF should then respond when enemy TF enters that hex to execute any type of mission (but not if it is just passing through)
Your troubles with IG division puzzle me. Other units moved over same path without problems yes?
Your screen shot showed what appeared to be full IG unit however supply required 13 is not what a full Japanese infantry division requires (It was carrying a normal divisions amount) There are no IG fragments on map? (I am trying to understand if bug could be something like this
Unit with fragments issued orders to move.
Fragment adopts parent unit orders
Parent unit somehow becomes stuck because fragment has not reached objective
I am sure I didn not verbalize that correctly. but I am wondering if fragment/parent unit order confusion is root of problem. Of course if there are no fragments then that would not be cause but I think whatever is telling IG division that it only requires 13 supply is somehow connected. (The unit that is being displayed as IG parent with TOE and all may be confused by program as a fragment and somewhere IG fragment is moving with small portion of troops and high supply requirment.)
I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!
RE: BUGWAR 2006!
With all the crap surrounding bugs and the forum reaction to my reports on them in this thread I stopped recording turns for a couple of days so we'll pick up the action from 17th March 1942. Nothing much was missed. The Australians continued bombing Koepang and my redeployments in the Pacific continue.
In India the March northward and the race to bring in more supply also continued. Supplies are critical but with the capture of all of western India up to and including Bombay expected in the next week things should stabilise quite nicely. In addition once I can create a road link between south-eastern India and my holdings in the west supply from Thailand and Burma should flow northward. In other words the margin I calculated will turn out to be a lot thinner than anticipated but it will prove sufficient.

At present there's a little sally by Dutch forces onto the road connecting Palembang to Teloekboetang. I have sufficient force in place to counter this excursion but am using it to provide a little low-risk live-fire training for some of my bombers.

And the end result of the damned bug! Fortunately with the Imperial Guard division already due in Hyderabad by the day before yesterday and now stuck in the hex outside Hyderabad I expect to be able to besiege Hyderabad within the next couple of days and retake it by the end of the week.

The single highly fatigued Tank Regiment which attacked Panaji was repulsed. Another is only a day away and Panaji will fall when this arrives. Unfortunately I missed a rule which has greatly impacted my industrial strength. I didn't realise that all HI I captured would be halved and, as such, am experiencing quite a deficit in HI. I'm at least 500 HI per day below where I thought I'd be at this stage and my HI reserve is dropping lower and lower. I have begun a programme of expanding HI in the home islands by at least 1000 HI per day and am accelerating my landings in south-eastern India in order to capture the industrial regions there as quickly as possible.

With that done the entire force will sweep down onto Chungking and engage in immense battles with the Chinese defenders.

Below you can see a picture of the situation in India. As you can see developments are proceeding apace with Bombay almost isolated and my forces poised to continue the dash northward in order to prevent Indian forces retreating into the Karachi bastion.

Hmm, even though I have almost 2:1 odds it seems the Chinese are able to inflict disproportionate losses on my Japanese ground formations. I find this strange. Does anyone have an explanation of why a force which is not cut off and outnumbered by about 3:1 can inflict losses at this sort of ratio?

RE: BUGWAR 2006!
Unfortunately missed a couple of turns again. Basically about the only things that happened were that I decided I couldn't continue to ignore the large amount of shipping I was seeing at Dutch Harbour and it would be suspicious if I didn't raid it and that more shiping kept showing up at Derby. It looks like there are at least 25 APs and AKs in Derby and at least 1 Australian division backed by a Base Force and one other, unidentified, unit. At Dutch Harbour there appear to be about a half-dozen APs defended by an equivalent number of light surface units.
I am frantically building a base at Kiska in order to support my surface strike group and minelayers in support of Amchitka and continuing my withdrawal from Palmyra and Christmas Islands. Elsewhere the illusion of weakness on the direct route to Fiji is also being maintained and my Betty Daitai at Noumea are awaiting sighting of a reinforcement convoy on its way to Canton.

I find the ROs excellent for blockade work. They are small and manoeuverable enough to evade Allied ASW efforts and RO 63, 65 and 66 are my most succesful submarines. The I-boats are holding a loose cordon on the routes to Dutch Harbour from Seattle and Alaska while two RO boats do the close-in work. I am holding off on further attacks in Kweiyang until such time as the Chinese forces I kicked out a few days back have all returned to the hex. I don't want to kick the remainder out only to have to check my advance in the mountains because the 50,000 Chinese I'd kicked out a week previously have recovered to such an extent that they can, with the aid of the mountain defensive bonus, halt my advance again. Below you can see the situation around Koepang. Kendari is almost a size 5 airbase and should be size 6 by the time Trey attacks. As you can see my defensive force is centred around a mix comprising 2 Naval Bomber Divisions and an Army Bomber Division. My basic concept is to allow the Allied invasion fleet into range and then to hammer it with Bettys and Nells while the Army Bomber Division ( at a range of 8 hexes) bombs the transports unloading at Koepang ( and later any planes which fly into that airfield). Withdrawing the Australian invasion forces will prove "costly" and I will attempt to force Trey's hand by landing counter-invasion on Timor and marching overland to Koepang.
So, not to hold but to bleed and make more cautious that is the plan.

A suspiciously high number of vehicles there. Perhaps you have found one of the armoured brigades that Trey managed to save?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Harlock,
Yup. 2 armoured Brigades are at Trimcomalee and the other is now trapped in Bombay. That's all three armoured Brigades trapped. Of course while the benefit of trapping them outside of Karachi is that I don't have to fight them inside Karachi the down side is that I have quite a few Indian Brigades running around the Indian countryside potentially blocking supply lines and generally making a nuisance of themselves and preventing my from concentrating my entire force against Karachi.

RE: BUGWAR 2006!
Intresting. Are going to divide your army and bypass Bombay in order to blockade Karachi?
Also any plans on bringing in more troops into the India? It seems that you have China quite well defeated and that should free up some Infantry division to be used there.

I'm resting the troops here for a moment as I want to gather sufficient force to ensure that when the Chinese are pushed out of Kweiyang their rout will not end short of Chungking. Ideally, of course, they would retreat towards Yunan and end up in a non-supplied jungle path. Interesting, between preparation levels and Level 7 forts the British defenders of Bombay have sextupled their effectiveness. The two divisions I have in position are insufficient to the task at hand. Two more divisions are a couple of days out and when they arrive on-scene the attacks will continue. It is essential to maintain the pace of the advance. Every weak Indian Brigade which is prevented from entering Karachi will rob its defence of an adjusted AV of up to 1200. That's almost 3 of my divisions. Fortunately with 2 divisions and 2 tank regiments cutting eastward and the others northward it would appear that my plan of driving northward before the divisions in Eastern India could be withdrawn to Karachi has worked. Bombay should fall around the first of April. My supply situation in India is now almost breaking even and once Bombay falls I should have sufficient supply to speed my operations significantly... I'm quite pleased at how I managed this invasion on a logistical shoestring. Less than 30,000 tons of supplies were landed with my invasion forces and I gambled a LOT on taking resource centres and supply dumps intact. It appears to have worked well and proves that the model for the invasion of Australia is workable.

The linking of bases in south-eastern India continues.
Aztez,
I don't foresee a need to besiege Karachi at this stage. I dislocated Trey's defences and have thus doomed most of his forces in south-eastern India but it would be an error for Trey to try to relieve Bombay by bringing troops from Karachi down. No, he will try to break through to Karachi only with those forces moving northward from Delhi and south-eastern India. I will win that race.
4 Divisions will invest Bombay and take it as quickly as possible using whatever methods yield the quickest results. Casualties here are an irrelevance. 1 division is airlanding into south-eastern India while 2 more are pushing eastward to Delhi and Calcutta respectively. This leaves 4 more to push towards Karachi and block the Indian divisions racing towards Karachi. Since my goal will not be prosecute to kill but the infinitely easier prosecute to drive off/stalemate I believe that those four divisions will be enough to stalemate things for a week. After that week the four divisions from Bombay will become available and I will hunt down the survivors of the south-eastern forces. With that done I will re-orient on Karachi.
This delay will also allow me to bring the army level bombers to bear on Karachi. I have about 750 available and intend to use them all. Several parachute regiments will also be committed to the assault. I've heard that paraborne drops cause the defenders to fight at a disadvantage if they coincide with a ground offensive.
Does anyone have any idea of how best to bring down fortification levels when one can't get 1:1 odds on the attack? I read a long thread about ground combat which went into detail on this some time ago but I can't find it now.
In other news the continued Allied naval presence at Amchitka presents an excellent opportunity to delay Allied attacks. Surface combat raiders have been dispatched to Dutch Harbour. Reinforcements are on the way and the attacks will continue until the Allied surface forces at Dutch Harbour have been eliminated. I expect to suffer no permanent losses but will have to send a few CLs and DDs back for repair. Consequently I'm sending additional CLs and DDs so that by the end of the 3 or 4 days of night surface strikes which will be required the survivors will still be able to muster a CL-led DD TF ( plus 1 x CA).
The evacuation of Koepang, Palmyra and Christmas Islands continue as does the reinforcement of the forward and nodal bases.

I wasn't expecting sacrificial stay-behinds but there's an entire Infantry Brigade at Diamond Harbour. Not a decisive effort but just complicating the British operational picture and attempting to tempt Trey into retaking these bases. The pros for him are that he will damage the HI there. The con is that if he attacks he pretty much guarantees that the units diverted to these attacks will not make it to Karachi. If I were in his shoes I would not attack but I think that the temptation to reduce my "winnings" will prove irresistible.

This was a probe to get an idea of what I am facing at Chungking. A large force but not one which cannot be attrited to uselessness given time. I should be able to mass approximately 10,000 AV at Chungking once the Chinese hold-outs behind my lines are taken care of. My timetable for China has gone out the window and I don't think Chungking will fall before the end of April as it will take some time to clear the Kweiyang and Changsha axes but it will fall.

I wasn't expecting sacrificial stay-behinds but there's an entire Infantry Brigade at Diamond Harbour. I'll bring forces in to contain it until the two divisions pushing eastward can add their weight to the assault. Trey was obviously still guarding against a further amphibious invasion in south-eastern India and left these units to make me pay if I went that route.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Rawalpindi base !!!

When events at Karachi reach a head and sufficient airfields have been built for my use the army bombers at Singapore will be withdrawn and directed to the Indian theatre of operations. I doubt there is much the forces in Singapore can do at this stage. Another six four-engined bombers fail to return from this mission. A couple of Mavis I had just based into Johnston Island in anticipation of a major Allied move against Palmyra... I expect this around the turn of the month... are destroyed but their pilots survive. Reinforcements are about 10 days away. System damage has limited the speed of the reinforcement convoy to 9 knots and, as such, it is arriving almost 2 weeks later than intended. I am worried that it will get caught up in the covering battle for the invasion of Palmyra but am determined to press on. Even if half the reinforcements are lost they can rebuild in time.

Naval bombardment of Bombay, at 20,10 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!
I committed to this bombardment in order to attempt to assess the effectiveness of my bombardment group against Karachi. My hope was that if I could limit damage suffered to my ships that repeated naval bombardment could rob the Allies of their support troops and air support and allow my land-based air and repeated ground attacks to wear down the defending combat troops.
Unfortunately I forgot to set the escorts to "do not bombard" and paid for this with one destroyer sunk and another with 99 sys damage and 90+ flotation.

This is important. I am trying to ensure a clear line of supply from Burma into south-eastern India. I amn't sure how much good it will do in terms of supply but I think Indian Industry will be very short of fuel so anything I can do to bring in more OIL to fuel the HI there will be extremely useful in the long run. Does anyone have any idea how much the trails hinder the transfer of OIL into India to fuel the HI there.
My HI levels are definitely critical at this stage as I recently ( within the last two days) undertook a plan to expand my Home Island HI by 600 points. Unfortunately I didn't realise it would take 10 HI for each planned point of expansion. So my HI reserves were halved in just one day and what had been a quite comfortable margin of error is now no margin at all.

Cant help with the Oil question unfortunately. Even as allies I'm never sure if i need to send oil to india. It's supposedly self supporting but i cant find enough oil centres there for that to make any sense [&:].
Looks like the indian adventure is going well. he reall has cut and run and given you the border (burma/india) on a plate. some nice cities round there too.

RE: BUGWAR 2006!
And the prize for unluckiest ship in the world goes to the Agra. The Ise and its escorting destroyers stumble across these two ships fleeing from south-eastern India. Frustratingly while Agra was damaged heavily enough to later sink the transport Empire Wildebeests manages to outsprint the undamaged destroyers. Interesting.
Never try to explain the surface combat model. In this case the defenders of the faith will say that the AK was far enough away, in a cove, in a squall, whatever, so it escaped detection altogether. What gets me is that this does not mesh well with the fact that every friendly TF in a hex will get intercepted by just one enemy TF. Those same folks who line up to explain surface combat anomalies won't try to explain this last ability. What a conceptual mess.

LOL! And what the surface TF misses the submarines clear up. 2 DDs, a PG and an MSW. Not a bad haul for a night's work. Damage to Japanese shipping is extremely light. Of course I expect this to change as his bombers get lucky with a break in the weather and hit back. Combined with the earlier attacks ( lost due to my error) this makes 2 DDs, a PG, an MSW, a couple of AVDs and, most importantly, TWO DMS sunk at Dutch Harbour and a fair few merchants sent scampering back to Canadian and American ports. The DMS are extremely important ships to attrit and I would have swapped a CA for these two ships. Thankfully I got them in exchange for moderate damage to two CLs and a DD, all of which will survive.

Not bad. Only Yura has sustained any serious damage ( about 50 sys). Abukuma will also have to go back to Japan for repairs but I believe these raids will have bought the time necessary to bring Kiska up to a Level 3 port. I have a dozen minelayers and an MLE waiting there ready to engage in a massive mining campaign of the Aleutians. Theoretically a dozen minelayers with 1 mission every 4 days can maintain a minebelt of 18,000 mines at Amchitka assuming 1% wastage per day. That should be sufficient to help keep Amchitka safe. If Trey doesn't attack in the next two weeks and waits for Dutch harbour to become a Level 4 airbase ( it is currently level 3) then Amchitka will, essentially, be safe from Allied attack. He can attrit me and impose a high rate of wastage of my supples at Amchitka but his ability to actually take the base will be almost completely removed.

RE: BUGWAR 2006!
Rob,
Yes, you're right. On the other hand the entire reason behind my landings in the far west was to gain access to two rail routes to Karachi both of which were shorter than the routes British and Indian forces in south-east India would have to take. I paid in blood ( or rather in extravagant Kate losses) for this advantage and so I'm glad it looks like it is going to pay off. Everything depends on there being less than 1500 AV ( ideally 1000 AV) in karachi. More than 1500 AV pretty much guarantees that Trey can hold out against the Southern and Burma Area Armies. This will require bringing in troops from China and completely wreck my timeline for Northern Australia and New Zealand ( with fairly disastrous consequences for my overall strategy).
Ron,
Aye, surface combat is "opaque" to say the least. Is there any thread dealing with surface combat dynamics? I know someone had written one ( and am currently trawling through the last 2 years of the War Room in an effort to find it... 30 pages done, about 15 more to go) and I think it may even have been you.
