Another minor bug?

Post by JudgeDredd »

I don't know if this is, because I am new to the game, so I could be reading it wrong, but I had a pitcher up and I was watching his Pitch Count (I'm trying to get on top of the stats used in the game of baseball, so I'm trying to watch everything and see how a play affects what stats)and I noticed he had a Pitch Count of 18. The next game log entry shows a 1-2 Pitch and then Strike Out....hence a 1-3 pitch.

Now, from what I can gather, this would mean the pitchers count just increased by 4...but his actual Pitch Count, after the strike out, went to 24 - increasing by 6.

Am I reading these wrong, or is this a wee bug there?

In fact, there is one scenario where the pitch count in the game might show 4 but actually be 6, and that is, @ 1-2, any foul balls would not count unless a bad pitch was made...is this correct?

Thx

Foul balls do count as pitches as the pitcher has to pitch the ball for the batter to foul the pitch. The batter can have 2 strikes and foul off pitches before either hitting the ball, striking out or walking. Sometimes you might see the batter striking out on an 0-2 count and have the pitchers pitch count go up by over 10 pitches as the batter fouls off a bunch of pitches.

Ahhh....so they do count for the pitcher, but a foul ball, unless caught, does not count against the batter? If a foul ball is caught, though, then the batter is out, right?

Thx

Foul balls count against the batter if he has 0 or 1 strikes already against him. After he has two strikes against him, they will not count no matter how many more he fouls off.... unless one of the fouls is caught, of course. In which case the batter is out as you mentioned.

That's one of the weird things about baseball-- a batter can foul off pitches in perpetuity after the first two strikes, so the frustrated pitcher may just elect to issue the batter an intentional walk before he wears out his arm against one guy. Patience and endurance play vital roles in this game, which implies a high level of athletic ability.
