Other Named Pilots can be created during game play by two methods:
1. Running-out-of-Pilots protection. When the number of available pilot slots reaches a certain level, the game will attempt to free up some pilots by pulling "extra" pilots from airgroups. Any airgroup that has significantly more pilots than it's maximum aircraft size will have some pilots pulled from the group and placed in the pool - thus becoming available for use in other squadrons.

Don, this is very interesting. I often read about how others stack many extra pilots in their frontline air units. I personally don't do it with one exception and that was a mistake. 46 pilots in a 27 plane sentai.[:(] I never knew this could happen.

I have a request that isn't necessary, but may decrease confusion over this pilot switcheroo thing from 1.081. I look at the named pilot pool as being 2 pools. First there are the named pilots from previous versions that have a delay and are associated with a certain unit.

Second is the group of named pilots we can create from 1.081.

Is there any way to separate these in the intel screen? Also, is there any way (short of the editor) to get a list of the first group so we can see which units are to receive free named pilots?

Thanks.

We are reluctant to add too much more information for the Pilots as there are no options for the player to act on that information. Indeed, we weren't even sure if it was a good idea to add the display of the Named Pilot Pool to the Pilot Pool screen. We only did it to show where the pilots went during "Disband Into Pool" - without it players would very reasonably ask "where did the pilots go?".

We are currently re-evaluating the Disband into Pool and Named Pilot Pool features.

Thanks Don. I understand your reasoning and appreciate all you do. I'm an information nut and would love to see who is available to reinforce my air units from the named pilot pool. Even though we don't have any control over these pilots, it's nice to see who's available to different units. It appears (although I may be wrong) that these pilots won't move to their unit until an extra plane is available for them. If we know they are available then we can add a plane (if possible) to allow the pilot to enter play.

One last question. When I upgraded, there was a number of named pilots in the IJA and IJN pilot pools. Are these all (including those still delayed) or just those currently available?

They are most likely entirely delayed pilots assigned to airgroups but not yet used. You would only see unassigned named pilots is you were close to running out of pilot slots (30,000) or had disbanded some airgroups into the pool.

The fact that they (delayed pilots) show in the pool indicates that their delay has expired but they have not yet been taken on strength by their assigned group(s). That does indeed mean that there are no planes currently requiring pilots in those groups.

Ahh, thanks much. Now I have to get them into their assigned units so they can earn their pay (and die gloriously for the Emperor.)[:D]
