Russian doctrine in future game?

Post by Real and Simulated Wars »

Hello,
I'm looking forward for Panther's next release. It could be a bit irating for some of you guys that even before the upcoming game being released I'm bitching with questions regarding the game after that! But well, I'm bored and game-less.
Dave has posted elsewhere that there is a future game in the works which will be in the Russian Front ("Red Star Rising"?). He also discussed the possibility that the game will include "Russian doctrine". It doesn't surprise me that being Panther games so oriented towards command problems, the particular style of command of Russian officers would be taken into account.
I have two questions:
1) Can anybody broadly tell what those changes will be?
2) Is German doctrine modelled in HttR and the upcoming CoTA? The German low level officers, particularly during the early years of the war were trained to take the initiative and given flexibility to accomplish the commanders intent (mission specific command style). This is in clear contrast with the Russian's command style (order specific command style).

Thanks,

Chelco,

Good question - even if a tad premature.[:)]

At the moment in both HTTR and COTA both sides use more or less the same doctrine. When we originally designed the engine we made provision for multiple doctrines. It's just that we only use one for each task type at the moment. So I plan to change that for Red Star Rising ( RSR ). What that will entail in detail I have yet to address.

Soviet doctrine differed from "western" doctrine in many ways - in planning, reactions and reassessment. In general it tended to be more fixed, less flexibe. The offense placed special emphasis on breakthrough and exploitation, which often saw their armour charging off deep into enemy territory, often unsupported and they would continue often ignoring the looming threats developing on their flanks. That's just one example.

What we probably will do is to isolate the individual reassessments and provide a means where different forces will implement a different suite of these. That way the Soviet forces may ignore the reassessment for previously unseen enemy threats during an attack, while the Germans implement it. We'll do something similar for the reactions as well.

Anyway I better get back to finishing off COTA.

Thanks for the response Dave,
I will get back to you with this matter after the release. I have a couple of AI papers about this.
Cheers,
