ANALISYS OF 5th TURN

Central Pacific

Invasion force carrying the 5. Base Force (that has been spotted), is closer to Midway, than the main invasion force carrying South Seas Detachment. I need to slow a bit the convoy because she cannot land as assault force.
But the TF Mutsu will continue on her course to shell Midway atoll for a 2-3 days before the invasion.
I’ve decided not to use the KB’s a/c to attack Midway airport. I know that at the beginning there are few US aircraft there so it’s not a danger. Instead I’ll use KB to cover the invasion and to attack any US CV that will try to threat my forces.

Borneo

I’ve tranferred more a/c to Kuching. From there I can attack now naval sea lane to and from Singapore.
Airport in Sumatra are also targets.
TF Kongo is in Singkawang now, but she’s ordered to sail to Pontianak, 1 hex S, where 7 allied ships are reported.

31. B.F. is one day from Tarakan. I need this unit to open the airbase.

Malaya

I’m completing the unload in Khota Bharu and Singora. More reinforcements are arriving from Saigon. After that I’ll move my troops inland.

56. Infantry Division is arriving to Saigon from Japan. She will wait there for the escort coming back from Khota Bharu. With the escort she will sail to land in Kuantan.

Burma

1st Tank Regiment is 30 miles from Victoria Point, while 55. Division and Imperial Guard is 40 miles from Tavoy.

Philippines

The convoy carrying the first wave are coming back to Pescadores and Formosa. Now they are loading the reinforcements and support units, like Flotilla and Air Division HQ and Engineering Regiment. They will bring them to Luzon.

From Taichu I’ll transport the 4. B.F. to Davao.

Landing on Midway

Post by George Patton »

Report of December 14th, 1941

Cent Pac

The second bombardement TF, formed by 4 CA, shelled tonight Midway island.
After that, the MSW widened path through the minefields. Before the dawn the first troops begun to land. The coastal guns opened an heavy fire against my transport ships and the light escort. Th eoperations continued during the day. One AP, in the morning hit a mine.

In the afternoon one PC sunk due to coastal guns damages.
After that SSD shock attacked automatically because Midway is an atoll. The fort has been reduced to 2. The losses are not so heavy: 78 men for japan and 23 for the US.

Now that SSD is landed also the 5. B.F. will approach to Midway. The unit will be there in a couple of days.

I-7 hit with 2 torpedoes on US AK NE of Hawaii.

The first Daitai arrived today in Wake. It’s the no. 1 Yokosuka, with 27 Kate after a long trip from Japan through various islands. It will be followed by other units, of Val and Zero.
The recon is assured by Mavis.

Philippines

P-40 continued to attack my ships north of Luzon, hitting with 2 bombs one AP and with one bomb another one.

Baby-KB intercepted one US AK NW of Palau and sunk her with 3 torpedoes.

SW Pac

4 AK arrived at Kavieng with a Construction Bn. but Wirraway from Rabaul were very effective and hit 1 of them with bombs.
This CB will be followed tomorrow by a B.F.

Troops landed today in Biak and Sorong, in New Guinea.

The 16. Inf Division is just arrived in Truk and is ready to attack Rabaul but before I need fighter on Kavieng to cover the operation. One Zero Daitai is on travel from Indochina and will be there in two more days.

China

The first of my division arrived at Yenen and, due to river effect, shock attacked with disastrous results.

DEI

From Palau I will send 21. + 22. Special B.F. to Menado, to build up the base and to deploy there some fighters to cover sea operations in the area. The troops will be transferred by 7 APD in three-four trips. Baby-KB will assure some air cover.
When Menado afld will be operative I will attack Amboina and the operation will be covered by fighters operating from Menado.

Malaya

5. Inf Div and support units arrived in Alor Star. The enemy base seems abandoned. The attack will be launched tomorrow.

Khota Bharu afld is now operational and some fighters and bombers arrived already today and will attack Singapore afld tomorrow.

Midway occupied

Post by George Patton »

Report of December 15th, 1941

Cent Pac

Midway surrendered today, after another shock attack made by SSD. My troops captured 3607 US soldiers.
The operation went faster that I supposed.
The next target it’s Johnston Atoll. I’m prepping South Sea Det and 53. Nav Gd Unit, already embarked.
The two base forces have been arrived tomorrow in Tokyo will be sent immediately there.
I hope that sooner or later Chuck will try to defend himself with the CV. I keep KB in the area.
Now Midway will be the main operation base for my carriers. Different TK area approaching to the just occupied atoll to unload fuel. Anyway KB is fine with fuel on board.

I saw that Chuck ha installed an afld at French Frigate Shoals. I suppose is a float plane base. So he can recon over Midway when he wants.
When I’ll go with all the fleet to Johnston I. I will do an attack against FFS also.

Philippines
The 2. Inf Div is heading to south Luzon. She will land o Naga. Legaspi will cut off. I don’t know what exactly Chuck has there. I know only that some B-17 are operating from there and from Naga.

To let Chuck think about the landing in Legaspi I’m sending a CA’s TF to shell the base. Maybe he will move down some units from Naga.

5 PT attacked a convoy N of Vigan, sinking one PC and damaging the 3 merchant ships.

DEI

One of my SS sunk one TK S of Singapore.

17 Sally attacked Palembang airfield, destroying on the ground 2 Lockheed 212 and 1 Swordfish.

SW Pac

Australian Wirraway sunk another AK in Kavieng, while unloading the Const Bn and the B.F. Finally Kavieng afld is operational and I’m transferring immediately some one Daitai of Zero. They will arrive tomorrow.

Malaya

Alor Star it’s easily occupied by my troops. The base was abandoned by british troops.
These part of the 25. Army, leaded by 5. Inf Div. is now directed towards Georgetown.
60 miles S, 18. Inf Div, with 4. and 21. Mix Bde, are marching towards Taiping, that seems abandoned.
From Khota Bharu, the 23. Mixed Bde, with 2 tanks regiment and arty units, started to march SW, towards Johore Bharu. They will join with 56. Inf Division, departed from Saigon to Kuantan and escorted by TF Kongo.

China

Another division arrived at Yenen, and another shock attack due to the river costed me 1888 men. [:@]

At Nanning, my army encopuntered the first defeat of the war. 3 chinese divisions shock attacked and forced my troops to retreat towards Canton. Same result in Pakhoi.
In fact it was exactly what I had preview during my war planning. This was the weaknest line of the chinese front. I didn’t find any way to reinforce it.
Anyway, by now I have no forces to conquer those two bases, and they are not so important. The only thing that I can try is to push towards Wuchow, and force Chuck to retreat the units in Nanning/Pakhoi to reinforce the garrison, but, also for this move, I have no enough forces.

PH is going to be a very very tough nut to crack under the Mod. The AA concentrated there alone would expose KB's lack of staying power when it comes to sieging a strong enemy base without land based air support, much less the airpower there (once the wrecked aircraft have been cleared and replaced) I suppose Midway could be used to base G4M's at for long range support.

If you can pull it off, i'll buy you a

Myself....i seem only capable of losing quads of CV's these days.

Yes the AA firepower is what scares me.
The idea to loose dozens of trained pilots it's not so funny.

its the same quandry yamamoto faced in real life...but you do have one ace. The game puts Midway at level 6 allowing to be a major operator of aircraft. In Shattered sword, the authors stated that Midway was totally unsuitable to support the #'s of aircraft needed to help suppress Oahu. KB they describe (correctly in my opinion) as more of a raiding force vs. a seige engine which is the principle difference between 1st Air fleet and the later war US TF/TG's which included a full support train which, along with massive numbers of durable bombers allowed them to take on land bases.

Not trying to discourage of course. If you can pull it off i'll be suitibly impressed. [:D]

Yes. I noted this level 6 afld. My Betty and Nell are ready in Kwajalein to be transferred when 5. B.F. is landed and when afld is reapaired.

Shattered Sword. It's here on my desk. Just arrived from Amazon a couple of weeks ago. But before I have to end Prange's Pearl Harbor.

Report of December 16th, 1941

SW Pac

CL Adelaide attacked my transport in Kavieng. This is a good move by Chuck. I didn’t expect an enemy warship there. One of the AK is in very bad condition.
Finally today F2 Yamada Daitai arrived in Kavieng and begun CAP.

My troops occupied easily Hollandia, Saidor and Biak, in New Guinea.

Philippines

The TF leaded by XX shelled Legaspi afld, destroying 1 P-40 on the ground.

Manila afld has been hit again. Another P-40 and 1 P-26 destroyed on the ground. No losses for me.

Malaya

149 bombers attacked Singapore airfield without escort. I don’t know why, but my Oscar didn’t take-off from Khota Bharu.
Anyway, I’ve lost 6 bombers and 25 have been damaged. But Singapore has been hit hard, and 4 Buffalo, 4 Vildebeest and 2 Blenheim have been shot down or destroyed on the ground. 74 hits on the airfield.

Then 8 Swordfish and 12 Buffalo came over Khota Bharu to attack my ships unloading reinforcements. My Oscar shot down 7 Buffalo and damaged 8 Swordfish, loosing nothing. However one AP received one torpedo.

China

Two DD have started to evacuated the B.F. forced to retreat from Pakhoi yesterday. The unit will be transported to Samah (Taan).

Cent Pac

During the afternoon I-169 sunk AK Argus NE of Oahu.

Report of December 17th, 1941

Philippines

More reinforcements are landing on Cebu I.

Cent Pac

I-6 has been sunk by US destroyers. I forgot to move him last turn, so the US located and sunk him.
I-3 hit with one torpedo one AK E of Maui and I-5 hit sunk another one AK NE of Molokai.

At Midway I’m unloading the 5. B.F. but the afld is too damaged to be used now. KB is ok with fuel so I will send the carriers east, to chase american carriers. I suppose at least Enterprise is returned to PH to refuel.

SW Pac

A small infantry unit is landing in Admiralty I.

Wirraway based in Rabaul suffered first loss of the war by Zero based in Kavieng.

Malaya

My DD cleared the path from mines at Kuantan, during the night. In the afternoon TF Kongo shelled the places of the landing, destroying one Blenheim and causing a lot of damages. After the bombardement first troops of the 56. Inf Div began to land.

5. Inf Div and support units arrived in Georgetown. I will not attack this turn. I’ll wait that 18. Division occupy Taiping, so that the british troops in Georgetown can not retrait.

Philippines

Manila afld has been hit hard again and another P-40 destroyed on the ground.

2. Infantry Division began to land on Naga during the afternoon.

Report of December 18th, 1941[/b]
Philippines
Landing in Naga are continuing, but today enemy coastal guns hit my troops on the beach and I had 675 casualties. In the afternoon one of my AK received 1 torpedo launched from an allied SS.   I’ve sent out several ASW TF from Pescadores to hunt allied subs around Luzon. S-41 has been hit 5 times and I think he’s badly damaged.   From Lingayen, 65. Infantry Bde and support units are ordered to march towards San Marcelino. Is the first movement of my troops since the landing.   Malaya
SS Truant tried to attack my troops ships anchored at Kuantan but was hit twice by the escort.   149 bombers attacked again Singapore, causing a lot of disasters. I’ve lost 7 bombers and another 17 landed in Khota Bharu whit a lot of holes in their fuselages. 4 enemy planes destroyed on the ground, 6 others damaged and 83 hits on Singapore base. As planned, 56. Inf Division easily conquered Kuantan. 4 Blenheim were on the ground, at the airfield and have been destroyed.   SW Pac
My troops occupied Admiralty Is.  The islands were undefended.   I’ve ordered to CL Kashima to sail towards Admiralty Is. and then proceed to New Guinea. I really don’t know were CL Adelaide is and maybe it could do another raid against my undefended transport. Kashima is the only important war ship that I have in the area at the moment. For that reason CL Naka is departing today from Luzon to join him.   Cent Pac
I’m really undecided about KB. I could send the carriers to the east, to attack merchant sealane (my subs spotted a lot of transport ships), but I don’t want to leave Midway alone. The airport is still too damaged to be operational and so I don’t have bombers there. And maybe Big E is not returned to PH. Maybe she’s still north of Midway. In addition I have tankers unloading precious fuel in Midway. I’ve already lost 5 tankers. I cannot afford another loss. Maybe it’s better to recall Nagumo and keep KB to guard Midway.

Report of December 19th, 1941[/b]

[/b] Malaya
One dutch AP has been damaged by SS I-153 S of Singapore. In the afternoon 25 Nell and 6 Betty took-off from Saigon to attack Force Z, south of Singapore. 19 Buffalo and 9 P-40 were on CAP and shot down 5 Nell and 6 Betty. One of my Nell placed one torpedo on Repulse. The torpedo penetrated the belt and exploded inside, causing a lot of damages. When my planes turned back they left the battlecruiser on flame. What was doing Force Z in Singapore? I moved Nell in Kuching yesterday but they didn’t attack the british capital ships. I don’t understand why. If they move to Kuantan my transport trioops will be in danger.     Philippines
1 PBY hit with one torpedo one AP near Naga. [X(] Later, always off Naga, my escort sunk 3 US PTM. One allied SS responded sinking one AK.   Today my bombers attacked Clark Field destroying 1 P-40 and 1 B.17 on the ground and causing several damages. I registered no losses, only 4 bombers damaged.   On Cebu island allied troops shock attacked and lost 551 men. My troops hold easily.   SW Pac
As I said in the report of yesterday, CL Adelaide appears again. 1 MSW sunk and one AP badly damaged. Adelaide received 5 light hits.   Over Kavieng my Zero shot down 4 Wirraway and 1 Hudson, without loosing planes. Enemy planes didn’t score on my ships. In the afternoon my troops occupied Madang, in New Guinea   Cent Pac
4 US DMS attacked one of my SS, SW of Hawaii. The SS has been damaged but he sunk DMS Hopkins with one torpedo.   Tomorrow my future moves. Now it’s Dec. 20th, and I have to evaluate production, etc. Every ten days I check supplies, fuel, oil, etc. I want take industrial production seriously this time.

Report of December 20th, 1941[/b]

After some days of pause due to a lot of work, we restart to play.   Malaya
I’ve lost 2 Sally over Singapore, but the airfield has been hit hardly again, with 139 bombers, and I think he will be soon abandoned by allied air forces. Enemy planes shot down: 2 Buffalo. 1 Blenheim destroyed on the ground.   In the afternoon my tanks that are running too fast, joined british LCU running S from Khota Bharu and clashed with them, but they are too weak and have been forced to stop.   Philippines
8 Lily destroyed 1 P-40 and 1 PBY in Manila causing little damages to the infrastructures. The other bombers based in Formosa have been sent over Clark Field, that suffered moderate damages (21 hits on runway). Another 2 P-40 destroyed on the ground and no losses on my side.   B-17 are coming sometimes over Formosa’s sky, to attack some ships, but they are too few and they scored no hits by now.   On Panay all my troops landed in Roxas arrived in Ilolilo. Now they are a bit tired and for the next days they will only bombard.   On Cebu reinforcements are coming from every where I can. They are all small Inf Units, but at the end they should be enough to occupy the island.   On Luzon 35000 men arrived in San Marcelino. Intelligence says that in the city there are 8 enemy units. I will bombard for a wile, waiting for some reinforcements from north.   Brunei
My Nell based in Kuching attacked again Force Z that is running south. Chuck abandoned the idea to do whatever he had planned before. I’ve lost 3 Nell and 4 Oscar and my planes scored no hit on enemy ships.   SW Pac
Dutch SS KXVI, that was since a couple of days in Palau harbor, has been finally sunk today.

I had a board game called "East Wind Rain"...bad one at that!

When I play as Japan in the next game I'm going to only allow the submarines, the Pearl Harbor CVs and the Malaya invasion TFs the first turn movement bonus.

Malaya

The bad news is that BB Haruna received a torpedo launched by dutch SS KXVII during the night at Kuantan. The ship will be out of action for months, because she’s now at 42/6/11. [:@][:@][:@]

Another air raid over Singapore, by 121 bombers. No one shot down, just 14 damaged. The airfield seems now abandoned.

The 4. Inf Mixed Bde reached Taiping today and will occupy the city tomorrow.

Philippines

One PC was destroyed by an american SS north of Luzon, but the SS was later damaged by the other ASW vessels.

Cent Pac

I-169 received 4 hits by DC NE of Oahu

China

Antoher Inf Unit arrived today at Yenan, crossing the Huang He river and causing the last shock attack, during which I’ve lost 1595 men (why all the men shock attacked if only one unit crossed the river and the others were already on the enemy side of the river?). Two more units have to cross it.

The 124. ENG B.F. that retreated from Pakhoi completed his evacuation with 2 DD and is now sailing towards Samah.

Burma

Imperial and 55. Inf Div are marching through the jungle since Dec. 7th and they have made only 40 miles!!
