Baker I. Invaded 7/12-7/13/42

Post by Mark VII »

Normal air activity over India that I'm not showing except the exploring raid on Lucknow to effort an identification of the new ground unit there.  Its a Brigade from the 5th Indian Division so Lucknow is safe for now.

In China there are several Chinese Corps that have been isolated behind my lines.  Before moving North I have decided to eliminate them to gain the land victory points and to free up my units that were pinning them.  Over the last week there has been several ground assaults and constant air attack.  This turn, four corps finally surrender.

As suspected, the Americans invade Baker Island.  My recently reinforced (two days ago) minefield does good work and nails a Battleship, DD and an AK.  None sink(that I know of), but they are out of the battle!  One surprize is that only the 2nd Marine Division and an Engineer Rgt land,.  Only last turn on the 11th did the fort level finally get to level 2, this will be critical in the upcoming shock attack!

Since the Americans landed on Canton Island and they started to shore bombard Baker even before Canton was secure I was pretty sure Baker was the next target.  Over the last three weeks I have been gathering assets in the Gilberts ready to strike the next American move.  The most important element is that the Baker garrison holds during the initial assault.  They do.

Operation BroadSword has now been ordered into action, there will be a surface element and a navalair element.  I have noticed that once the BB Bombardment TF is done, it retreats to the nearest base to rearm.  I wonder if a surface action TF is left behind, haven't seen one.  I hope to hit the invasion transports hard and sink some of the 2nd Marine Division before they get ashore.  Stay turned!

Its 0720 as Cdr. N. Ishikawa stood on the open bridge atop the conning tower of the I-15 watching Lt. Bando as he made final preparations to take off in his E14Y1 Float plane for the morning reconnaissance mission.  At 0415, Ishikawa had received a message from 4th Fleet informing him of the criminal American bandits invasion of Baker Island the day before.  4th Fleet wanted his boat to be especially on the lookout for any American Carriers plus any other shipping that might be headed to Baker.

With a roar, the 340hp Hitachi engine easily powered the small float plane in the air.  Bando headed due north to begin his 30 kilometer circle around the submarine to make sure there were no surprises near by before heading out for his 200 kilometer search to the East.  As the Lt. vanished into the low clouds it was time for some breakfast to be sent up!

Five minutes later, the Lt. was seen approaching from the northwest at low altitude.  "Damn" Ishikawa mutters to himself thinking the Model 1-1 had another mechanical problem and todays mission would have to be scrubbed.  Instead, Bando starts to signal with his lamp:  "Two enemy ships bearing 300* 25 kilometers on course 120* speed 12 knots stop.  Believe to be battleship or large cruiser and destroyer stop.  Larger ship is smoking and has list to port stop.  Do not believe I was spotted as in clouds stop.  Heading south now to not give away your position stop.  Happy hunting stop."

Ishikawa signals back: "contact report received stop.  We will close and attack stop.  you continue with your mission stop.  long live the Emperor stop"

The I-15 immediately turns to a new course heading 300* and speeds up to 16 knots.  20 minutes later smoke is spotted by the lookout and the boat dives to periscope depth.  95 minutes later, Ishikawa has identified the larger ship as either a Pennsylvania or Oklahoma class American Battleship.  The American is having some kind of problem and has slowed to 10 knots with light smoke coming out of the port side near the bow.  The I-15  had manuvered to with in 3600 meters when both enemy ships slowly started to turn away.  Ishikawa immeadiatly orders all six tubes fired and the Type 95 weapons sail on their way at 50 knots.

Ishikawa keeps watching through the periscope and is rewarded by seeing two water plums tower over the battleship followed by two booms reverberating thru the hull of the I-15.  The crew shouts....BANZAI!!! BANZAI!!! BANZAI!!!  Oh, the destroyer has changed course and is now headed our way.  Time to dive away for some more depth and change course and lets live another day!

Ambush at Baker Island

Post by Mark VII »

This operation(BroadSword) had been planned for some time.  When the Americans invaded Baker Island and if the garrison held out during the first attacks, off we go.  A recently redeployed KB would sit at 240 miles to the west and direct airstrikes at anything at sea.  A cruiser surface action group would charge to Baker and take on what ever it found.

I believed the American battleship deathstar would not be there as it had bombarded the day before and was spotted heading to Canton Island.  I knew invasion transports would still be in the area but was not sure if a surface group would be left behind to protect the invasion forces.  My surface TF was led by Tanaka and set to mission speed with the hope they would go in during darkness, they did.  Tanaka found a TF only slightly larger than itself but containing a new USN battleship.  Two battles, the first went only two rounds with the first being ONLY the Japanese TF flinging long-lance torpedoes at the hapless Americans from a range of 3000 yards.  The second round only a minor exchange of gunfire at 4000yards and then the TF's broke off the action.  The second battle was only three rounds starting at 7000 yards, then 8000 and finishing at 10,000yards.  The first round was an exchange of gunfire which started out to the disadvantage to the Japanese and then a long-lance hit on the North Carolina in the last round.

KB had very bad luck, was in position by the PM airphase of July 14 but there was a large cloud over it so no air ops.[:@]  The AM phase of the 15th also saw no air ops because of storms and finally during the PM phase on the 15th did the skies clear up.  Most but not all of the attack Daitai's attacked but they did good damage for loss of only one Zero and six Kate's!

For the first time in a long time, subs played an important role.  Three crippled American ships were attacked with two immediatly sinking with the third hopefully to follow soon.

Very happy with my minefield!  A battleship, three DD's and a AK have run into mines!  This helped to sink a DD plus with Pennsylvania eating an additional two torpedoes, hopefully a BB soon!

Known Tally including submarine cleanup duty shows one Omaha Class CL and four DD's sunk.  There are several American ships who should be sinking soon and have a long way to go to a level 3 or larger port.  Palmyra(L5) is the nearest at 960 miles.  Canton I is only a level 2 port but is 480 miles away.  Looking forward to seeing some "sinking" messages!

I know this tactical victory is not a war winner for me.  But, it will slow down the counter-offensive some and maybe force Ed to use his carriers much closer for the next op.

India and China had the normal shore and air bombardments but left them off the AAR since nothing was really new!

Chokai shown putting a long-lance into the North Carolina at the end of the second battle. I believe this helped slow down the NC for when the carrier a/c attacked! Overall there was seven long-lance hits on the American combat ships. Indianapolis has to be in trouble!

RE: Ambush at Baker Island

The first air attack goes after mostly the North Carolina. It would appear that only the Vals from the Akagi, and the Kates from both Akagi &Kaga were part of this first attack. LCdr T. Chihaya led the Akagi's Kanbaku's in first from 15,000 ft. All against North Carolina which seemed to not put up a whole lot of flak. 11 hits from 27 Vals knocking out several AA guns and starting fires. Thats just under a 41% hit rate with only 10 damaged and all returning home!

Then the determined Kanko's bored in at wave top level to deliver their deadly fish. Seven hits on the North Carolina and at the very end of the phase 4 Kate's went after the Hobart and nailed her two times. Nine hits from 36 Kates is not to shabby(25%). Six Kates did not return. No message yet on the North Carolina or Hobart but the NC has got to be going down. Can't see how she can survive 8 torpedo hits in less than 24 hours???

The second wave went after the transport TF but concentrated on combatants. Concord is ripped apart by torpedoes and along with a DD Sink minutes after the raid departs! Yes, five AP's/AK's are hit, three with two torpedoes each so lets hope they go down soon.

Val's hit with 26% of their bombs and the Kate's score with 28.5% of their fish. Overall between the two air raids, Val's land on target with 34.7% of their weapons and the Kates get 27% of the torpedoes into American hulls, not bad!

And to those who think the RO's are useless, think again! RO-63 fires the rear two torps and get two hits on damaged O'Brien breaking her back and sending her down in minutes. A few minutes later she fires four torpedoes at crippled Conyngham getting one hit which also sends her to Davy Jones locker in a matter of minutes.

Chandpur & Baker Island taken

Post by Mark VII »

Operation BroadSword was designed as a hit and run Op only staying around in the Baker Island area if we knew where the American Carriers were. Intel thought they were nearby(NE of Canton Island) which was close enough if they chose to join the fun at Baker. So KB withdrew with a nice victory over the American Navy sinking a BB, 4xDD's an AP and a Aussie CL. Several more American warships and AP's are in danger of sinking soon!

To bad KB didn't stay another two days as the American transport fleet continued to unload and no American CV's were spotted. The 2nd Marine Division did manage to seize Baker from my small garrison.

My Corps advancing across the river into Chandpur found only a brigade from the 18th Division defending and easily brushed them and the support units aside during the required shock attack. Instead of surrendering as I expected, they retreated East across the water way onto the roadway in the jungle. Didn't know you could move between those two hexes?

Funny thing, the Chandpur Naval Base Force also retreated even though it is a static unit. Wonder if they brought any 9 inch naval guns with them? My bombing of the 'ex-Calcutta/ex-Diamond Harbor garrison tells me that the "ex-static" Diamond Harbor Naval Base Force also retreated(twice now)and is part of the Allied stack trapped between Calcutta and Chandpur.

An evil new American air pirate has shown itself up North! B-24D's attack Kiska but don't hit anything.

In East India I get a good sortie rate out of my bombers and there are frequent attacks(especially the 19th) on the two groups of isolated Commonwealth troops. On the 20th, a IJA Corps should be crossing the river and shocking the Commonwealth troops trapped between Calcutta and Chandpur into surrender! I fear they will retreat across the river into the hex SW of Calcutta as I have not occupied it yet.[:@]

A small group of Otori DD's and Tomozuru torpedo boats pound Yanam and blow up some nice Allied aircraft. Wish my CA's would get as good results.

The 2nd Marine Division continues to push the valient defenders of Baker Island into the North corner of the Island. I fear the end is near!

India/Burma Map

Post by Mark VII »

A look at the India front 7/20/42. The big four Cities are taken and I need to clean up the retreatees! Those trapped between Calcutta and Chandpur will be the first to go. Those east of Chandpur may be left to die in the jungle, not sure what I will do with them yet!

After theCalcutta retreatees surrender, my troops have a couple of options. One would be to head to the Dimapur-Imphal-Ledo triangle. I believe that Dimapur has the 45th Indian 'B' Brigade and a BF, Jorhat only a BF, Imphal and Kohmia both have a combat unit and a BF, while Ledo contains the 26th Indian Division, the 254th Indian Tk Brigade, the 45th 'A' Brigade and two BF's. All of these units are cut off along the RR from mainland India and Ledo is double cutoff! Destroying these units should add a bunch to the Allies Army lost points which is already at 12,879 while the Japanese is at 366!

We can also head to Lucknow or in the direction of Yanam and see what happens.

7/20-7/21/42 Sining Surrenders

Post by Mark VII »

Major victory in North China as Sining surrenders to the Imperial Japanese Army. The 16th and 27 Corps, 34th Group Army HQ, 10th War HQ, and the 1st, 6th, 8th and 15th Base Forces all surrender. The Allied Army loss points jumped only 93 points so not a overwelming disaster in the victory point battle but now my northern flank is cleared in China.

In India I begin my first attack to destroy the surrounded Allied units between Calcutta and Chandpur with a shock attack as we cross the river. I have two mostly rested Divisions and an Arty Rgt but with 6-1 odds the Brits are not ready to surrender yet. An unknown Hurricane shows up over the battle and shots down a Zero before being destroyed itself. Where did it come from?

My defensive minefield at the captured Baker Island continues to trouble the Americans. They seem to have problems dealing with mines! Four more combatants have large holes in them and are either sinking or making the long journey to the repair yards. The Baker Island minefield with around 600 mines has now hit a BB, 6xDD's, a DMS, a AK and a AP.

The trapped Brits in India continue to see a Hurricane or two on patrol over their positions. Wonder if this is helping their morale? Where are these guys coming from? They are with the 135th Squadron. If this continues will ask Ed where the 135th is based!

A Battleship bombardment at Yanam yeilds some nice results on the gathering Allied a/c population.

The IJN airforce in the Marshall Islands is reporting a large number of American submarine pirate contacts. A five DD ASW TF was dispatched to deal with one of the contacts. Turns out the underwater pirates name is the Swordfish. The only way that I can figure this out is that the many ship/sub contacts over these two days caused the Swordfish to be low on battery power and thus forced to be on the surface. My ASW force catches her on the surface and the Yudachi puts her main guns to good use.

Yanam is pounded again from the sea and air. Some more Hurricanes are left in a wrecked condition. The 135th Squadron is still flying CAP over the Brits trapped near Calcutta. They got a Sally this turn and got away to where ever they are coming from!

A good day for the IJN Submarine Command. First, the I-2 nails the Dent after being crippled three days ago by a Baker Island mine. Then Combined Fleet learns that the BB Pennsylvania rolled over and sank after first a Baker Island mine hit and then speared by two torpedoes from I-15 thirteen days ago. The American toll from the invasion of Baker Island keeps rising!

Ed tells that the 135th Squadron flying Hurricanes over India are based in Canada. Those Canadians sure know how to stretch out that gas milege. Not only that, FLt K. Langdon now has three kills, all the way across the Pacific and the Bay of Bengal!

Bad weather grounds most air activity on the India front. Lots of air strikes in China but I have not been bothering to show that.

The bad weather is sort of a blessing as large elements of the Combined Fleet are at sea in the Bay of Bengal and there are no sightings by Allied air cover. A new phase of Operation TigerWalk is about to begin, the invasion of Yanam. Intel tells me that only a Brigade from the 5th Indian Division is defending. Landings will begin August 1st!

Of interest, two more ships from the American Baker Island invasion succumb to their wounds, AP Thomas Jefferson and AK Arkansan sink. So far the Allies have lost North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indianapolis, Hobart, Concord, 6xDD's, 4xAP's and an AK from the Baker Island Operation. I think I have only lost the RO-63. All of my damaged surface ships are back in home waters repairing!

8/01-8/02/42 Yanam landing

Post by Mark VII »

TigerWalk continues with a major landing at Yanam. LtGen S. Yamamoto in command of the 15th Army leads the 16th and 20th Divisions supported by four combat engineer Rgt's, two Tank Rgt's, a Artillery Rgt and a Motar Btn. I forgot to include a CA with each of the two troop convoys for CD suppression (only a CL each) so my invading troops take some additional damage. Intel tells me that there is only a brigade from the 5th Indian Division defending so I don't anticipate to much resistance!

Of all the air attacks on my forces, only B-17E's at 6000 feet score any hits, damn those laser guided bombs!

8/03-8/04/42 Dimapur Captured

Post by Mark VII »

The landing on Yanam continues at a slow pace. Lots of broken legs and concusions but very few fatalities to the invading troops. Allied a/c are in the air but they come in penny packets but do get a few hits. Nothing sinks! Dawn of the 5th will see a all out assault on the airbase. With only a brigade defending, the Brits should just wilt away in the face of Japanese steel! A enemy minefield is encountered but is quickly cleared after damaging only one AK.

Dimapur is seized sealing the fate of the multiple Allied units trapped Eastern India.

In China, the hex NE of Canton has had five Chinese units isolated for a long time. Once the rail line was cleared, I sent a couple of fresh divisions to assist destroying them. Finally after weeks of air attacks and bombardments, the Chinese seem ready to join my RR work gangs. The first unit to surrender is the Army HQ? That should do wonders keeping the morale up of the ground pounders!

8/03-8/04/42 Yanam seized

Post by Mark VII »

Yanam falls easily to the first attack, apparently a sqn of Hurricanes was trapped on the field when I shut it down. My left flank has now been pushed out over 400 miles from Diamond Harbor. The Calcutta/Chandpur/Dacca triangle will now have plenty of warning should the Brits try to advance from Madras. Time to start digging in!

In the hex just NE of Canton, the Chinese finally except their fate as RR laborers as the 46th, 64th, 39th and 84th Corps surrender. This frees up a bunch of IJA divisions for use else where! The dead Allied Army points only went up 260 points so these Corps must of been well worn down.

Good turn in the air as the Allies lose 64 to the Japs 12. 15 Hurricanes ended up being destroyed on the ground along with 12 throwaways, 11 BlenheimIV's, 7 P40B's and some others. During a recon of Derby noticed the throwaway CAP and brought up some Zero's for the easy pickings and kill some Allied pilots.
