Information and short cuts?

Post by Fred98 »

I have never played TOAW.

Given that there are 200 units on the map, and each unit has at least 3 "features" attack strength, defense strength and movement, is there a short cut way to find the information?

Are there lists like in Uncomon Valour where you can drill down or maybe short cuts like in the Decisive Battles series?

Is the game turn based or WEGO?

It's turned based.

There are a wide variety in the number of units on each side, there are about 70 old scenarios, and 130 newer ones included. The maximum is 2000 units per side.

There's a sticky AAR at the top which shows the two zoom levels for the main map, zoomed out shoes only counters, zoomed shows either attack/defense or movement, there's a toggle to switch between the two views. There's also a side panel that always shows the zoomed in view, and details on the terrain.

You can look at lists of formations and the units in them, and you can even look at the quipment that makes up the unit.

One thing that is unique is that the numbers shown on the couters is only an approximation, TOAW models the actual equipment, and the attack values are going to be a bit different from the displayed value depending on the make up of the defender. You don't need to know this for the starting levels of play, but it's the kind of details that the very top players pay attention to.

There aren't always 200 units on the map. There are some much smaller scenarios that can help you 'in' so to speak. And there are a number of ways to drill down/find the information you want. Test driving one of these smaller scenarios allows you to take a good look under the hood though the play balance isn't always that great.

I think there's also still an old Talonsoft Demo version out there somewhere if you want to try it.
