AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/10/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Washington Island at 108,86

Minor American landings have taken place at Washington Island south-east of Palmyra. These landings were covered by the American carriers but as time went by without any major reaction from my forces ( apart from an intentionally abortive sortie north-east of Johnston Island designed to make it seem that I was thinking of engaging to deny Palmyra when I had no such intention) the strong covering forces were withdrawn. In response I sortied the Baker Island DD Flotilla. Again, although the surface combat model is hosed the flotilla didn't do too badly. It sinks an AVD and is almost certainly responsible for the sinking of an AK. I will order it back in for a second bite of the cherry as I don't see any quick-reaction forces nearby and can probably get away with one more day of attacks.

If I'm wrong then this DD flotilla will be destroyed, a lesson will be learnt and no longer will I be able to go back on "the 2nd night" for further strikes as has been my SOP.

Kunming falls and my troops set off in hot pursuit. The Tank Regiments are particularly bloodthirsty and should be in position to continue the attack very shortly. Lets see if I can get a proper pursuit-type series of engagements going here. This has been what I've been planning towards since Kweiyang and now I have the chance to deliver.

The reduction of Diamond Harbour goes fairly well. A solid 2:1 and a drop in fortification levels. There are still a lot of stay-behinds running around the countryside and they are causing me a headache since they are preventing me from concentrating my forces for the capture of Diamond Harbour and Chandpur.

Sub attack near Washington Island at 108,86

Japanese Ships
SS I-160

Allied Ships
AK Autolycus, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

I 160 joins the fun. Where possible I've stationed RO class submarines at atolls the Americans are likely to invade or attempt to resupply. I hadn't considered that they would take Washington... I had expected a full-blooded invasion of Palmyra and the 46 men remaining there [:D]... and so no submarine was allocated to this position. Consequently I've had to take one of my I class deep-ocean boats and assign it to these shallow waters. Notwithstanding the extempore nature of this tasking the I 160 is doing well. Autolycus is added to my growing tally of Allied merchant shipping dispatched this month.

A nice, cheap, attack designed to catch enemy shipping fleeing from Derby. Only three ships appear to be in port... My question as to where the rest of these ships are is answered when my aerial reconnaissance forces at Port Moresby spot a couple of merchant ships traversing the Australia/New Guinea channel. It seems they are fleeing for the east coast of Australia. Sensible!

Hmm, again the ground combat model's very randomness rears its head. Fresh on the heels of a 2:1 defeat the Allied effective combat strength doubles while the victorious Japanese troops attack with barely one-third of the effectiveness they did the day before. It seems the effect of random dice rolls on the ground combat model is quite marked.

Below you can see the combat forces arrayed against the four tank regiments leading the pursuit of the forces ejected from Kunming. The most noticeable thing in my opinion is the extreme drop in Chinese combat effectiveness after only a couple of forced retreats.

Oh and you can also see that ueber-sneaky Trey has managed to cut my supply lines to Kunming with a Chinese unit. I am going to have to divert a couple of divisions back from Kunming to eliminate this threat. More delay!

This is a bit better. Of course the Blenheims and Wellingtons are likely to only be the initial committment. There are a lot of B-17s and IL-4s which should be floating around my perimeter which I simply amn't seeing. I'm betting they may be in Karachi.

And the Chinese are pushed back yet again. They are now at the Yunan/Chungking crossroads. Since I have troops at Chungking itself I expect the Chinese troops to withdraw toward Yunan when next attacked. This is important as it will act to limit the chinese troops available for the defence of Chungking. I'll post a picture of the Chinese theatre of operations next turn.

Veji,

I have a division behind Level 9 forts at Johore Bahru. When the battle for India is over and I'm on my way to Northern Australia I will stop off at Singapore, take it, and add the division guarding it to my strike force.

Every so often a ship of mine passing by Singapore is spotted by a Vildebeeste so I think 1 or 2 of those planes are operating out of Singapore but they are operationally insignificant so I'm ignoring them.

And onto the next day...

AK Donald McKay, Shell hits 26, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

Once it became clear, a fortnight ago, that the Americans would be making strenuous efforts to resupply/reinforce Canton Island I sent Takao from deep reserve to reinforce the Baker Island reaction force. This decision appears to have paid dividends today with all three merchants at Canton Island sunk. Undoubtedly they managed to land some supplies but not enough to avert the need for further resupply runs.

As you can see from the picture below the Chinese are in desperate straits. The infantry have retreated toward Yunan. Once the Chinese Corps blocking the Kweiyang/Kunming road is routed I will drive on Chungking and things should happen fairly quickly from then. I should be able to muster about 10,000 to 11,000 AV and in combination with airstrikes I believe this will suffice.

Unfortunately one fairly large disaster has occurred... I had no idea how much armaments would be required to fill out a division and so left my armaments production ON. It seems that my armaments pool was sufficiently large to outfit 4 of the 5 new divisions which arrived today. So, instead of a hidden fist comprising 7 divisions I will only have one comprising 3 divisions. Still, by the time the fighting around Chungking finishes I should be able to purchase some more units cheaply. I expect this battle will be EXTREMELY bloody.

All of the usual air attacks continue today... Again no sign of any major move against Bombay... I'm leaning more and more towards committing half my bomber force to Bombay to try and catch the Allies on the ground in Karachi. If I can catch his planes on the ground in such an overcrowded airfield I should be able to cause massive losses but the risk of being caught myself is massive. Decisions, decisions.

2 Wirraway? Weird! Still it fits in with my supposition that the Chinese air force is being switched to more effective plane types and then transferred to India via Ledo. Would the Wirraway really be more effective than the I-153 or I-16?

In any case Yunan has fallen and the 28 units I had driven there have been pushed into the mountainous terrain south-west of Yunan. They can no longer interfere with operations against Chungking. I am leaving my two most damaged Brigades ( one with only 28 non-disabled squads) behind to guard Yunan... I estimate that it will have plenty of time to recover its disablements before the Chinese can march over the mountainous paths and back into Yunan... while the majority of my force heads for Chungking.

Essentially, through manoeuvre I have limited the Chinese defence of Chungking to a maximum of 47 units out of the 130+ that could, potentially, have been committed. In addition of those 47 units fully half are the respawned survivors of major defeats so I should be facing an effective combat force of roughly 32 or 33 Corps. Only the urban bonus will make this at all difficult.

And Calcutta falls. My HI is fairly critical and the additional HI from India ( once my 3 x 16,000 ton tankers reach Madras) will be crucial in maintaining my production.

Below you can see the situation in China.

In today's sweep over Karachi one of the leading Allied aces was downed. Unfortunately my own top scorer was also posted MIA. he had 12 kills.

Veji,
Well, there seems to be a new willingness to own up to errors among the new programmers and given this change I figured I'd go back to the old title as I only changed title out of sheer frustration that no-one was actually responding to the requests for clarification.... I still had to burn over 800 PP to fix the changes the bug wrought ;(.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/20/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1064 encounters mine field at Dutch Harbor (103,36)

Allied Ships
DD Brooks, and is sunk
MSW Quatsino

Definitely a bug. What happened to Moreton Bay yesterday has now recurred. DD Brooks was shown during the turn resolution to sink 2 or 3 hexes west of Pearl Harbour but in the combat report it shows up as being sunk at Dutch Harbour during Quatsino's minesweeping efforts.

Allied ground losses:

Airbase supply hits 5

With the continued high number of supply hits I imagine the Chinese forces defending Chungking must be very low on supplies by now. Unfortunately it still looks as though they are able to repair damage done to their airfields fairly quickly and I can't figure out how this is possible given the fact that the Chinese forces have access to only 36,000 tons of supply per month with which to run their air force and keep almost 70 Corps ( the forces assigned to Chungking, Chengtu and the various important hexes around it) in action.

Another succesful sweep over Colombo. 5 kills at no cost. Seeing as nothing more has been thrown at Bombay I think I may stage my army bombers into Bombay for a rapid strike on Karachi. My recon shows over 900 Allied planes on the airfield there and the opportunity to strike them on the ground just cannot be passed up. Unfortunately given the major breaches in FOW this will give the Allies a great opportunity to strike my base IF Trey is checking the air balance figures religiously every turn.

In other news Junyo has been commissioned and is, along with the elements of KB previously operating in the Indian Ocean and Northern Australia, making full speed for Midway with a view to re-assigning all air wings to their original carriers and creating three CV TFs which will be used to hunt the American carriers. I'm not looking for a decisive engagement as I need my carriers to cover the invasions of Australia and New Zealand but if I can destroy or damage two American carriers I will be able to hold the survivors with half of my carrier force while the other half covers these upcoming invasions.

Enemy forces also seem to be trickling back into Derby. This is ominous as it is risky and the sort of thing to be done only if the shipping is required for an important operation... such as the invasion of Koepang. I think though that I will launch more surface strikes on Derby, transport in a Base Force and some AAA and commit a mixed fighter division to Koepang. It is time to build Koepang up for the offensive against Australia.

It looks like my Zeroes have culled as many fighters as they are going to. Results are starting to fall although, to be honest, I don't see why trey even let the Wirraways fly. They are just targets with little to no ability to fight back at this stage.

Amboina again. Trey seems to enjoy hitting it whenever I stage something out of it. I have lots of replacements for my Dinahs and none of my pilots got killed so I'm happy to endure these raids.

Ki-15 Babs x 4

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
81 casualties reported

The softening up of the Chinese Corps blocking the Kweiyang/Kunming road continues. Once the road is clear my attack on Chungking can be much more easily supplied. The convoluted supply route for the troops currently at Chungking does NOT provide them with their minimum level of supply and it is for this reason that I have not, yet, attacked. In the meantime the AV of the forces sitting at Chungking continues to grow. It was barely 4,000 when the siege began and is now already over 4700.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 81st PA Division, at 42,58

Japanese aircraft
A5M4 Claude x 47
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 10

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-4 Wildcat: 26 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
27 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 1
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 3

A much more succesful sortie. I had noted that enemy fighters appeared to have been based at French Frigate Shoals and so launched this raid to ensure I had a better handle on escorting my raids and also to test my Zeroes against enemy F4F-4s. I was amazed with the 6 to 1 kill ratio earned by the Zeroes. I had expected something between 2:1 and 1:1. Six to one is amazing. I feel MUCH more confident now in taking on the enemy carrier fleet.

Interesting, Chinese troops launched multiple assaults up and down the line. Trey must have hoped that I'd thinned my defences enough to allow him to break through into my rear and force me to pull units back from the impending assault on Chungking. This hope has proven unfounded.

Hmm, to attack next turn or not? My division is very fatigued and disrupted and low on supply but the enemy force appears to be seriously worn down. Perhaps an attack could be succesful? I think that the Allied force at Colombo will probably prove far more formidable in defence than it has in attack but I decide it is worth a shot. Even if I fail I'll get a good opportunity to gauge how well recovered my force must be later on to take Colombo.

I'm also seeing more enemy shipping in the area between French Frigate Shoals and Pearl Harbour. I am moving two of my Glen subs into position to provide coverage north and south of this route and am sortieing three additional submarines from Midway in order to form a small blockade on the route to French Frigate Shoals. If the enemy carriers sortie I would like the opportunity to torpedo one of them.

The KB-CVL is still a couple of days away at full speed. I will try to avoid combat until it can be combined with my main force. I will then re-organise my carrier groups and get all of my planes back onto the right carriers. I have 1500 PP saved and this will cost me over 800 of those PP. Damned stupid bug!!! I could have bought almost an entire experienced infantry brigade from China for that price.

I'm also loading the 35th Brigade onto transports at Midway and am a week away from loading another Brigade at Amchitka. The 35th will land at French Frigate Shoals and take it from the Americans. I estimate that this will form a threat to Pearl and will guarantee the sortieing of the American carrier fleet. With both sides trying to cover counter-invasions and with both sides having the ability to project land-based airpower into the area (and avoid the other's LBA envelope) the stage will be set for an indecisive carrier battle ( precisely what I wish to ensure... I don't have to win but I have to not lose) +/- the taking of French Frigate Shoals.

I believe the 35th Brigade will be sufficient to take French Frigate Shoals as it is, currently, quite lightly held but following my misappreciation at Canton Island and the fact that 35th Brigade is, essentially, unprepped I am backstopping it with a Brigade from Amchitka. The Amchitka Brigade is more than 50% prepped for French Frigate Shoals but will only be on-scene from mid-May. Since I am trying for a carrier battle I want to fight sooner rather than later since the sooner I fight the more likely it is Trey will think he is still only facing the four fleet carriers I left behind when the rest went to the Indian Ocean and thus the more likely he is to commit to battle and let me bring the full weight of my 10 carrier and the 150+ Bettys/Nells at Midway to bear.

Sinking Bug

Post by Capt. Harlock »

TF 1064 encounters mine field at Dutch Harbor (103,36)

Allied Ships
DD Brooks, and is sunk
MSW Quatsino

Definitely a bug. What happened to Moreton Bay yesterday has now recurred. DD Brooks was shown during the turn resolution to sink 2 or 3 hexes west of Pearl Harbour but in the combat report it shows up as being sunk at Dutch Harbour

My theory would be that this is less a bug than incomplete reporting. It's possible that the code checked for mine hits, found none, and then proceeded directly to damage control results on all ships having damage. This is the point when heavily damaged ships succumb to their wounds, and the code reported the sinking of Brooks without bothering to print that the scene of interest had shifted.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

I'm moving KB a little closer to French Frigate Shoals next turn. Not close enough to get decisively engaged but enough to be seen and continue drawing the American CVs onward. The CVL-KB is only 2 days from Midway and while I'd like to re-organise there a mid-ocean rendezvous is possible if the American CVs continue to advance.

I have an feeling that those US CV's will come out to play. (A big mistake if he does so)

Your opponent has taken out a quite an beating in this game. So he needs a moral victory somewhere and by loosing India completely he might try somekind of a counterstrike.
