Several Questions
Hi,
New guy who really sucks. Any help would be great.
1) I am pretty sure I understand how NOT to waste population points. But, I have been spending all my resources every turn and I cannot grasp how this could be bad. Without getting too complicated, is there something wrong with this? Why would someone want to save resources?
2) With Ftrs at range of 1, other then Naval Stuff (CAP and subs), are they inferior in almost every way to AA?
3) Supplies. I am forcing myself to use Advanced Supply. I am confused by section 10.3 of the manual. Especially bullets 3 and 4. Can someone reword that for me? Is it saying you can only take supplies from the Region you started in and if that does not work out, take them from a region adjacent to the region you started in?
4) How come in the Research screen, some units you can spend up to 3 Research points, and other units you can only spend 1?
5) If you capture Netherlands and West France both only have 1 Resource point. So to obtain one resource from say Netherlands, it takes 10 supply to fix resource. So is that like saying that if you fix a one resource, it will take you two turns after that before you get a dividend back from the repair?
Thanks I have many more.

You probably dont want to be 'saving' resources. The resource pool is only there for if you cant spend all the resource or if a site gets cut off. It will store up to 3 points I believe. When playing the US, its helpful to have 'saved' resources for when their Factory multiplier takes off late in the game.
2) With Ftrs at range of 1, other then Naval Stuff (CAP and subs), are they inferior in almost every way to AA?
More units have a higher Land Attack than Air Attack so Flak are more vulnerable to ground units than Fighters. Fighters can also tech up their Evasion fairly high. Finally, Fighters can increase their Range (and you should probably do so in many cases).
3) Supplies. I am forcing myself to use Advanced Supply. I am confused by section 10.3 of the manual. Especially bullets 3 and 4. Can someone reword that for me? I'm not really sure what you are asking here. I dont have the rule book in front of me. If you are using Auto-supply, supply will tend to be moved for you to the correct locations. If you arent, you'll have to manually move supply to either the space the unit is in or adjacent to it in order for it to draw supply.
4) How come in the Research screen, some units you can spend up to 3 Research points, and other units you can only spend 1?
You have to work your way up. The first turn on a particular upgrade you can only put 1 point. The next turn its 2 and the turn after you can do 3. Three is the max per turn until you are over the 'World Standard' for that trait. After that, you can double it if you are 1 point over, but there is now a harder cap on upgrades beyond that. Look in the 1.87 patch readme for info on it.
5) If you capture Netherlands and West France both only have 1 Resource point. So to obtain one resource from say Netherlands, it takes 10 supply to fix resource. So is that like saying that if you fix a one resource, it will take you two turns after that before you get a dividend back from the repair?
Yes, this is true, but as Germany you tend to have more Factory Points than Resource Points so its almost always in your best interest to repair resources that you think you'll hold onto for a while.
Hope it helps!
RE: Several Questions
I just got the game and I'm much worse off than balto, as I haven't figured out how not to waste pop points.
Can someone enlighten me about it?

Deciding how to manage your spendings, so as to maximize your population usage is probably the toughest part of the game. Yes, you are going to have unspent population from time to time. The only way to really avoid that would be to really pack your build que with units so that you can use every one of your manpower points to construct units. The downside to that would be less spending available for research and supply. You can't have it all, so to speak, and that is where you need to make tough decisions. That's all part of strategy gaming my friends.
2) With Ftrs at range of 1, other then Naval Stuff (CAP and subs), are they inferior in almost every way to AA?
As a general rule, AA is better for defense and fighters for offense. If you wish to protect England from a Sealion attempt it's best in the early stages to rely on Flak. If you used fighters for your defense then German fighters can come in and sweep them out. And this offensive role for instance is when fighters are more useful than Flak. Offensive uses like that one are common, so your going to want a mix of both. It all depends on your game plan, and at times you have to switch your build priority from one to the other.
As you move your units they will take supplies from the stockpile located in their area first and once that runs out will take from adjacent areas. There are times however when you will not want to use the supplies located in the area you are moving from. Like when you wish to save 10 supply there for a repair. In that case you will want to use supplies in adjacent areas first rather than those you wish to save. You do that by using that side bar over on the right. Once you select a unit to move click the oil icon then select the area you wish to supply from. When it works you will see that your unit has been supplied. Look at its icon to see that.

Yes, your right. But since you are likely going to hold the area for 4 years it will pay for itself many times over. Over in Russia that may not always be the case as you may only hold for a couple turns. That's when you would have a harder time deciding if it's worth it.

RE: Several Questions
Thanks for the info. The learning curve here ain't beer & pretzels.
Regarding point 2, would you research evasion or air attack to
strengthen AA effectiveness against aircraft?

RE: Several Questions
For Flak you want to increase its AA. Its toughness is rather secondary, because if you can hit the aircraft it will imediately be turned back. The flak will not even come under attack unless there are more aircraft then Flak in the battle. Flak is also not attacked that often when other unit types are present. Air like to attack artillery then infantry and militia. Because the flak can hide behind other units the need to increase its evasion is low.

RE: Several Questions
Hello Simpeter,
Spitfire and I are going to start a game.
I think the three of us are at the same skill level -- very very low.
Want to start a battle? I think that is how we can all get better at this.
I am Axis in my game with Spitfire. You want to be Axis?

RE: Several Questions
Balto,
I appreciate the offer. I've never played a game over internet before, and I don't know what it involves. It may be that I'm not viable material, as I don't have much free time. I've had the flu for the last 5 days, and so I've spent my time surfin' the web and learning this game. But, I'll be back to work tomorrow and I'll be free only at irregular moments(I work 12-14 hrs a day).
Actually, I still haven't played a game with supply ON, as some of the production phase elements continue to elude me (population wastage remains a mystery). I
recently had 1 turn where I had no pop points available in Germany, and so I used all the production for research. Great research, but I don't think that it's what I should be doing, particularly considering that it was the turn in which i launched Barbarossa! And it's been taking me hours. I think I'm gonna have to catch hepatitis if I want to learn to play advanced supply.
Maybe I should take a raincheck, but I'll be hanging around. This game is an old A&Aer's dream come true.
Post on the AAR, then I can root for you.

RE: Several Questions
hahaha, funny post. Good luck to you.
BTW, as you know I am new, but your statement that you had no pop on a turn.., I think that is impossible.
When you are ready, I am here.

RE: Several Questions
was wondering if i could get involved in that game or a similar one
RE: Several Questions
I would have thought so too, but it happened the next turn as well. I had 30 bleedin' points for research.
The turn after that, my pop read 10/4 in Germany, with a huge load of production. But when I started buying units, the pop stat didn't move, so I was able to buy 3 Ftr,3 Stukes,3AA,3Tanks,3Arty,9Inf (or damn near).
This is my 1st time with production, but I think I gotta head back to the drawing board, because it makes no sense to me. Maybe because I have supply OFF?

RE: Several Questions
Mr Rommel,
I only have one game with spitfire. Are you saying you are interesed in a game with me?
I am ready. Can we use the Advanced Supply and the Fog Of War? The pros seem to use that so I want to get used to that level so I can crush them in the future.

Population is expended on the last turn of production for any unit. So, starting all those units do not use population on their first turn in production - but to finish them you will eventually need to pay 2 population for each.

Yeah, what's happening is your population is being assigned to units on their turn of completion (those units in the top box of the production spiral - THIS turn). You have no population because you're completing too many units this turn (the ones due for completion next turn or later don't affect your population - yet). Remember, each (military) unit requires 2 population points, so if you have 10 pop available, and you're completing 5 new units this turn, your pop points will show 0.
Try "freezing" production of some of your units due for completion this turn (right click on them), just to see what happens. Watch your population numbers. You can "unfreeze" production again just by right clicking on those units (the ones that turned red).
