Backup CD Art

Guys, you should really make available a template for direct download purchasers to use for printing their backup CD labels. If I recall correctly, you did this for Starshatter. In all other cases I have had to create my own artwork using whatever I could copy from the manual or with screen shots of the game in progress and so forth.

This has been especially difficult for CODA as your manuals lack a nice cover page (they are very spartan actually) even though there are lots of small screen shots scattered throughout.The artwork for the box looks good, but you don't provide a direct shot of that, only a small oblique thumbnail.

Anyway, here's my first cut at creating my own label. Feel free to copy it for your own use if you like. Obviously the text and logos are trademarked and this is for personal backup use only! [:-]

Sorry, we don't do that as policy. I wish we could, but it would be asking for some of the less ethical folks on the net to create perfect-looking pirated copies of our games. At least right now, you can generally tell a pirated physical copy when you see it by the less than perfect box and CD art.

Oops... that was fast. While you were posting I was saying:

It would also be really cool if Matrix would provide a template for a DVD case insert to properly store your games.

I'm not a great artist... I would really appreciate some professional art from Matrix to go along with my direct downloads. It could clearly indicate "backup copy" or whatever to discourage anyone trying to sell pirated copies of the game. I wouldn't expect to have the artwork from the actual physical shipment.

I'll bet that a lot of your downloaders would appreciate you doing this. [&o][&o][&o]

Note that you could combat the piracy by clearly marking it up as personal archival copies. I mean, if someone wants to do a knockoff... you really aren't discouraging them. A good Photoshopper could put together something authentic in a short period of time.

Hey, I just scribbled "COTA" using a Sharpie. Pretty labels, bah! [;)]

My procedure:

Under "My Documents" I create a folder named COTA

I download the game and save it there.

I get the details of my order, save into a text file and save the text file under COTA too

I the burn the folder to a CD

Subsequently patches and or scenarios might be released. These are downloaded to the same folder and burnt to a second CD.

Then I get an empty 2 x CD case and keep the CD there.

Each CD has a simple label like an envelope type label.

The spine of the case I use another letter type label and write the name neatly.

I get the front page of the manual, print it in colour and insert into the front of the case.

Presto! I have a back-up and a nice case.

I don't buy lots of games so its not a lot of work.

I'm too "picky" for the "Sharpie Method" [:D] Since I got that Epson R300, I've printed artwork onto everything that I copy, even PowerPoints for use at school or a Music CD mix. It always impresses people around here. [;)] In fact, the only DVD's and CD's that I buy these days are 100 packs of printable ones.

My next DVD burner may be one equipped with the "Lightscribe" capability to burn images onto the disk with a laser. Hopefully, the price of those disks will be reasonable in the near future.
