Campaign for South Vietnam ( Solitare )

Post by larryfulkerson »

NVA turn 1:

One of the theater options is to divert NVA replacements to the VC. I don't want to do that just yet.

The 50th Inf Bn is to head south to Qui Nhon and blow the main bridge across the river. And the secondary bridge if possible. The reason is that if the ARVN ever fix it they might feel they have to protect it, thereby posting a unit or units there, possibly for the rest of the game.

Image

The 10th Inf Bn is to head south toward Quan Long blowing bridges as he goes. I got those in the red circles and for some reason missed the one in the green circles. ????

Image

I went through all the Ho Chi Minh AAA sites and set them all to ignore losses:

Image

The 308th NVA Div blew through the ruff puff's in Con Thien and assulted the ARVN battalion just south of Con Thien and forced it back. Meanwhile the 102nd NVA regiment captured Khe Sanh and turned it over to the 308th Sappers to hold:

Image

The NVA start out with 400 Lt Rifle Squads on hand and don't produce any so any the NVA gets will have to come from conscripts and reinforcements. Here's the Inventory if you want to view it:

According to the reinforcements schedule each province capital holds the potential to produce a conscript, so it behooves me to capture the province capitals. Here's the reinforcements schedule for turn two:

The NVA order of battle lists about 124 units but a lot of those are nonmovable border guards and Ho Chi Minh trail AAA units. Here is the order of battle:

I broke the 22nd ARVN Div into batallions to protect Pleiku:

Image

The turn 1 air power is pathetic:

Image

The Allied order of battle includes 77 Regional Forces/Popular Forces ( ruffs puffs ). Here is the order of battle:

I'm going to call in all the Marine stuff and the 1st Cav:

Image

It looks like there are 5 trouble spots remaining at the end of this turn.  Here's spot 1( the ARVN's don't have enough combat power to force the NVA back north ):

Here's spot 2 :

CSV, NVA Turn 2:

Post by larryfulkerson »

There were 5 trouble spots remaining at the end of turn 1, now there are 7.

In spot 1 the NVA forced the ARVN back to Dong Ha but lost both batallions of Infantry.
They have decided to call it a day with the captures of Kae Sahn and Con Thien:

Image

In spot 2 the NVA have captured Da Nang and are in no shape to fight off the counterattack that is sure to come next turn:

Image

In spot 3 the VC batallion succeeded in blowing the bridge and is on the way to the other bridge:

Image

In spot 4 the VC batallion decided not to tangle with the ARVN Rangers and captured Thanh Hoa instead of heading SouthEast:

Image

In spot 5 the VC batallion destroyed the ruff puff's but went into reorg before he could move into Quan Long:

Image

In Spot 6 the VC batallion captured Quang Ngai and is dug in awaiting the counterattack or the appearance of the VC conscriptions whichever occurs first:

Image

In spot 7 the VC batallion attacked the RF/PF at Nha Trang and went into reorg:

The Allied air power is now more like it.  Here's the list if you want to view it:
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/5640 ... ist2ob.gif

There were 7 trouble spots remaining at the end of turn 2 .

In spot 1 A recon element from the Marine Amphibious Force ( MAF ) is covering the bridge to protect it while seperate elements from the ARVN 1st Div begin to surround the 308th Sapper unit:

Image

In spot 2 A tank batallion from MAF has assisted the ARVN in attacking the enemy regiment in Da Nang.  Several fire missions were called in from an offshore destroyer to help soften up the regiment.  A VC supply point and some VC conscripts have appeared in Da Nang:

Image

In spot 3 The 7th Eng batallion repaired the blown bridge and the ARVN 21st Ranger batallion attacked the VC unit with 25% losses.  They decided to entrench on the bridge to protect it:

Image

In spot 4 ARVN Rangers assisted in the destruction of the VC batallion and the recapture of Thanh Hoa:

Image

In spot 5 the 31st Regiment of the ARVN 21st Div forced the VC batallion back capturing Quan Long and the 21st Div HQ unit repaired the bridge:

Image

In Spot 6 The 9th Eng batallion is backed up by some 8" howitzers to begin the cordon of the Quan Ngai area:

Image

In spot 7 the 11th Eng batallion moved into Na Trang to reinforce the RF/PF there:

CSV, NVA Turn 3:

Post by larryfulkerson »

I moved the VC supply point in Da Nang west toward the mountains hoping that it'll survive the move and get lost in the shuffle. And I disbanded the VC conscript unit gaining 110 light rifle squads and 1 60mm mortar for the equipment pool:

Image

The VC supply point in Quang Ngai probably won't get far if it costs 19 movement points for the first hex moved to and the survival rate for moving there would probably be less than nominal so I'll just leave it there in town:

Image

The Thua Thien Political section and the 42nd MS Arty batallion succeeded in sneaking up close enough to launch a rocket attack on the airbase just north of Hue and succeded in evaporating an entire squadron (VMFA-115) of 3 F-4's:

Image

And then although it looks like a suicidal move the 42nd MS Arty batallion moves in close enough to launch an attack on the airbase at Phu Bai and the two squadrons there.  The ARVN units adjacent are RF/PF's and can't move.  The result of the attack is the evaporation of the two squadrons there, the VMFA-314 and the VMA-311, a total of 18 aircraft in those two squadrons:

Image

The 50th Inf batallion moved west along the highway blowing 4 bridges along the way.  He and the E210 Inf batallion and the 450th Sappers await their chance to spring another attack soon:

Image

The Q80 Inf batallion has overrun the airbase to the NorthEast of Hoi An:

Image

I got the first four cadres on the HCM trail.  I choose to disband them later.  Let the Allies try to bomb them with my AAA units there:

Image

The 1st NVA Div captures Bien Dien on their way to Hue:
