New Terrain in COTA

Post by Tzar007 »

Look at the picture below. I have encircled in green what looks like grey spots of terrain (there are some others I did not encircle too). I wondered for a while yesterday night what were they (we did not have that kind of terrain in HTTR, well at least it did not look like this) but I was just too damn lazy and busy fighting in Iraklion to open up the beautiful reference manual to see what it is. This morning I did and then understood what it was.

The first one who manages to tell me what it is without looking in the manual wins...a virtual beer !

Hint: these structures are great defensive spots...

They represent fortifications or large churches. Hence the great defense numbers.
There may also be an issue with there map zoom look too. All of the other city like areas have one one zoom level of bitmap before changing to a solid color. Except for forts. Factories don't have an alpha channel image either, but that may have been the intent.

Hey that was fast [:)]

In HTTR, churches were not represented IIRC. Here, they are, and they are of great defensive value.

I did not notice about the zoom thing, but indeed they stay as solid color until the last 2 zooms, where you can see the terrain underneath. No big deal though, at least they are more clearly visible since they stay as a solid color most of the time.

HttR has "Forts" as well, just with a different look, and both are offering the values for the use as strong-points.

I starta wonder.....have you ever tried a right-button-click on terrain/objects? No need for a sneak peek in the manual to identify things.

Yep, that's what I did first. But when you right-click on one of these grey spots, it only tells you the terrain underneath it. Like the big church in town it said "town", the others it said "village". It does not say church or fort. That's why I had to check the manual.

Nope [:D]. You have to right-click several times, just "search" the corners of a church/Fort and you'll see the Fort-thingy. :-)

Geez, I tried harder this time and you're right !

Man, you have to be exactly on one pixel to get that "Fort or Church" popup. Clicking on like 99% of the surface won't make it appear. I would never have got it !

Well, i got angry 'coz it wouldn't show the info, so I clicked on the Fort like a madman, since I knew that they use to display the terrain types that way. [8D]
