Are MRE's and that freeze dried stuff you see in the camping stores anything alike?

Not at all any more. The old MREs (1980s to early 90s) had a lot of freeze dried stuff, but now there is practically nothing that is freeze dried. It's basically pasteurized, homogonized stuff that's packaged to last forever.
