Tutorial #1. Units' orders delay question

Post by Real and Simulated Wars »

I am playing around with tutorial #1. I am just playing it in different ways to get a better understanding of things I overlooked in HttR.

So, playing as the Allies in tutorial 1 I had the following forces in the map:

NZ Cav Regt (2nd NZ Div Cav Regt)
Greek Inf Bn (II InfBn 82 Inf Regt)
Aus Inf Brig (19th Inf Brigade)

According to the manual the on-map boss is the Aus Inf Brig HQ unit (the highest ranked HQ unit on the map). Important to note, in the OOB tab, the NZ Cav Regt and the Greek Inf Bn do not appear as organic subordinates to the Aus Inf Brig HQ.

I started the scenario with "painfully realistic" order delays and let the clock run until 7:01 AM without giving any orders.
Then I checked the orders delay tab for some units around. Some units have short some have long orders delay. In particular, every unit in the Greek Inf Bn had a whooping 200 minutes of delay at that time. Within the NZ cavalry Regt, two Sqns (the two northernsmost) had 200 minutes of delay as opposed of the other two brother NZ Cav Sqns which had around 50 minutes of delay at that time.

Why two brother Sqns, well within reach of their organic superior (NZ Cav Regt HQ) had different orders delay at that time?
I supposse that this last difference in orders delay between brother NZ Sqns has to do with the distance to the on-map boss. Could it be?

But now here is another thing I don't understand. At 7:30 AM I gave the Greek Inf Bn an order to move north (away from the on-map boss) and as I suspected, the Greek Inf Bn started moving around 9:50 AM or so. Surprisingly, when I checked on their status at a later time (12:00 AM or so), I realized that all the units in the Greek Inf Bn have now orders delay of around 50 minutes. Can somebody explain me what happened? Basically I moved a Greek Bn further away from the on-map boss and that reduced their orders delay.

One thing I thought is that when the orders delay-free window was gone (7:01AM) the order delays for each unit in the map were calculated relative to the on-map boss. I didn't give out orders yet at that time. Then, when I gave my first order to the Greek Inf Bn, the order delays for every Greek Inf Coy started bein calculated relative to the Greek Inf Bn HQ. Could that be? I hope I'm not being too confusing.

Your help is appreciated.

Chelco,

At game start the orders delays displayed in the Cmd Tab are not properly calced till you give an order for the first time. The reason this is so is that they are all on temporary hold missions and have no force group assigned yet. Once you give an order the forceGroup is set and after a minute or so the orders delay fiuelds should update.

When you gave orders to the Gk Inf Bn HQ you in fact gave orders to it and all its organic subordinates, not just to the HQ unit. This is the defaul behaviour - ie. giving orders to any unit also includes its organics unless these have been detached ( by specifically including them in another order ).

Thanks Dave,
All makes sense now. Orders delay-free first hour is a good thing.[:D]

Wow! Now that I think about it, it really makes sense that the Greek Inf Bn had such 200 minutes order delays if no orders were given by me until 7:30 AM. They were just not organic subordinates to the on-map boss (Aus Inf Brig), they were kindof far from the on-map boss, equiped with the abstracted less powerful infantry radios (as opposed to the also not organic Aus Cav Regt). Hell, the game is so well thought. Once I pulled through some orders to them, voila, further orders should take less time.
