Can I use my Harpoon 2 Rulebook?

Post by Adam Parker »

Wow - this release came right out of the blue for me - I have wanted for so long now, to get my Harpoon 2 Commanders Edition by Three-Sixty working on my PC. It stopped working once I could no longer invoke DOS mode after moving to Win98 from 95! It was the sexiest game I ever owned - so true to the what I believe command and control are all about. So real in feel.

(No, not even the Harpoon Classic Win95 edition could satisfy me - that was just ugly to look at imho [;)] Harpoon 2 was a work of graphical art!)

So a quick question - I still have my users manuals from Harpoon 2. Will they be useful in getting me playing with the new H3?

Into harm's way we go (once we download),
Adam.

I can only speak from personal experience, but I found the Harpoon2 manuals to be very helpful in understanding the mechanics of using the Harpoon commands. IMO, there are lots of new things added to ANW that aren't covered in the old manuals, but I think that most of the basics are covered in the old books. I found it much easier to have a book open and learning the game than having to refer to *.PDf files. [:)]

Check out the new electronic Manual / book. It is quite extensive.

I have the old Harpoon 2 Admirals Edition myself. That great manual plus videos! And photos! Wonder if I can adapt them to H2ANW?

Thanks Herman. Will be digging them out asap!

I just realised the Harpoon 2 I own is actually the "Multimedia Edition" which I think by the screen shots here is what H3 seems to have adopted as a graphical start.

Wow, this is a real surprise. I wonder if all the battle packs have been included?

A very happy wargamer. Man, I loved thumbing through the rules to the actual board game too. I know a guy who is a friend of Larry Bond.

There's just something cool about watching a CIC screen on your PC as a battle unfolds, faithful iconography and all.

Adam.

I just realized it too. Cool watching the little video windows, even if they are a cheat [;)].

Great news too - from the Armchair General preview:

"ANW will ship with all the original battlesets and six new scenarios created by AGSI specifically for this release, for a grand total of about 120 scenarios..."

Great value!

The various Battle Packages like WestPac, Cold War, Regional Conflicts, etc. were all there in the Beta testing. Looks like they're all included in the game.

I agree. The Harpoon 2 manuals were very informative to read. I also have the paper rules. I never got a chance to play the game, but I could spend hours just reading through the scenario descriptions. [8D]

If anyone is interested, someone thinks that he found a way to add on to the current library of video animations. That would mean that the different weapons could, conceivably, each have their own individual video. I haven't seen it done, but this fellow thinks that it is possible. So, if anyone is looking for a project, all help is welcome. [8D]

The H2 manual & Guide to Naval Warfare are still useful and relevant, as they cover the essentials of air & naval combat and these tend to remain unchanged. In addition, any book you can pick up on modern air & naval warfare will also be of help.

Sunburn, I have to confess that I have been away from Harpoon for quite a while. Since I see that you have the Harpoon HQ banner in your sig file, could you or some of your folks post a new thread here outlining what resources you have over there that would work with H3ANW? I'm sure it would be of benefit for the rest of us. Perhaps we could sticky it as a reference.

There is an online manual available on the Harpoon Wiki at http://mediawiki.advancedgaming.biz/index.php/Harpoon_3_manual. We have tried to update it with the most current information during the ANW beta phase, so it should give you good advice.

Cheers,

The HHQ originally started as the home of the DB2000 database and its associated scenarios. DB2000 was started by Ragnar Emsoy back with the old H2 but really had the chance to shine with the coming of H3 and its range of improvements. DB2000 covers the time period from 1985-present (and a little beyond). Since the release of H3 the Harpoon community has grown and to cater for various tastes there are now more third party db option than ever before. In addition to DB2000 the HHQ now host the Colonial Wars DB covering the period after the Second World War through to the mid sixties. Bridging the gap between the Colonial Wars db and DB2000 is the DB1965-79. The most recent database added to the HHQ lineup is WWII DB. Lovingly crafted (how could creating a WWII db for a game intented for missile warfare be anything but a labour of love) this db should really have its chance to shine with ANW in the future. You can have a look at the platfroms found in the various databases via the database encyclopedia

Of course we should all remember that the strength of the Harpoon series has always been the community that has grown around it. It is the community that develops these databases and the community that writes scenarios for them. The evolution of both Harpoon 3ANW and the still to come Commander Edition would never have happened without the community support and now with this release we will have the oportunity to welcome back old pooners and new. I just hope that everybody will think just as much about what they can give back to the community as they think about what it owes them.

cheers

Daniel

ps I have placed this a thread of its own now as per Temple original request.
