A little confused and disappointed

Post by thewood1 »

I have been playing and buying H1, 2, and 3 through all its iterations and tribulations. I have probably spent over $300 on versions os harpoon and its battlesets. With that said, even though I qualified for a $15 discount, I bought the $50 version just to get the game and show support for Matrix.

After getting the game, I am a little disappointed that no database editor is included, but I am more disappointed in all the links referring back to an AGSI website that is not ready for prime time. The readme link just takes to a "to be completed later" message and the database editor manual takes to an AGSI page that says no editor is available. The discount link from the Matrix page takes you to another AGSI page that says the discount page will be added later.

Come on. If you're not ready, you're not ready. Are Matrix and AGSI so desperate for revenue that they release a product to a VERY loyal fan base that is just not ready to be released.

I am not going to take advantage of multiplayer. I thought I was spending $50 for bug fixes. Instead, I see many of the bugs still listed as to be fixed later. Not only that, realistic developments from the community like variable ready times for aircraft not being integrated.

Variable ready times for aircraft are a DB-specific feature. Some DBs support it (e.g. DB2000, Colonial Wars DB, 1965-79 DB), others do not.

In fact, I think that, except for the Official DB [ODb] distributed by AGSI, almost every other Database (PlayersDB, H3DB, HUD-II, HutchDB, ADb, WW2Db, ColonialDB, DB2k, etc.) implements the Custom Ready Times in some manner or form.

Since H3ANW does include all the datapacks I figure that the $50 is a good investment, but I'm also basing that on the promise of the database editor being released in the next month or so. Yes, the online readme is a bit sad and I think might throw people off since it appears to be incomplete. Perhaps someone from AGSI could put a couple of paragraphs there.

I will say that I purchased this new edition primarily because it is now under the Matrix Games umbrella. Matrix has always appeared to be interested in the long term support of it's products so I'm counting on them to help keep H3ANW alive and well.

One more thing. Would someone *please* explain to my wife why I needed to buy *three* Matrix Games products within a week? She just doesn't seem to understand [;)]

Hi Temple

Thank you for the purchase and the support. Matrix Games met with both Don Gilman and Larry Bond and I can tell you that the Harpoon Community could not have two better people heading up this project. These guys are dedicated to the project and I think the whole Harpoon Community will see the long term improvements.

There is a scenario editor, there is no DB editor.

There is a scenario editor, there is no DB editor.

If you really need a DB editor, immediately, you can still get and use the one based on Microsoft Access and written by Jon Reimer. It is an excellent utility:

David,

Does this mean basically the Harpoon 3 ANW product is the future Harpoon pathway? (Whereas 'Harpoon 4' was at one point the future pathway for Harpoon.)

By the way, I am not trying to put words into your mouth, I'm just asking.

Hi witpqs

I can not say because I really do not know for sure what the next step of the Harpoon series will be. I do know I will be sitting down with everyone at Origins and see what comes up.

Thanks David. Given the way you there at Matrix do things, I hope you play a significant part in things to come.
