Opponent may have reloaded blah blah times

What exactly does this mean when you get this message on a PBEM game?

Though there is a possibility that your opponent has a legitimate excuse, odds are, they are cheating, and reloading previously saved games after they've already played on. If you'd like to handle this behind the scenes, so as to not falsely accuse someone in public, then email me, or PM me.

Woe there, cowboy! I'd say that odds are, they aren't cheating at this point. Crashes can cause one to reload, among other things. Plus doesn't this count saving mid-turn during a PBEM and loading it back up to work on it again?

LoL...if it was Chuck, then I'll personally vouch for his honesty. Anybody else, I don't know...[;)]

Anyhow, you can save and load, any number of times during a PBEM, and as long as you don't reload an earlier one that you've played on from, you shouldn't have to worry about a reload message. If you did have a crash though, and had to reload an earlier save, then you will get a reload message.

For example...you start the game, play a little, exit and save as Scenario 1a.SAL, restart the game, load Scenario 1a.SAL, play a little, exit and save as Scenario 1b.SAL, restart the game load Scenario 1b.SAL, play a little, exit and save as Scenario 1c.SAL, and so on, until you finally exit after the end of the turn, save as Scenario 1.PBL. This is okay, and will not trigger any reload messages.

Now, if you were to start the game, play a little, exit and save as Scenario 1a.SAL, restart the game, load Scenario 1a.SAL, play a little, exit and save as Scenario 1b.SAL, restart the game load Scenario 1a.SAL, play a little, exit and save as Scenario 1c.SAL, and so on, until you finally exit after the end of the turn, save as Scenario 1.PBL, then you would trigger a reload warning, since you are loading an earlier save turn, that you had played on from.

Like I said, if you have any concerns, PM me, or email me, and I'll try to get to the bottom of the situation, and determine whether it is a case of a false positive, or a cheat. I don't want anyone falsely accused in public.

Well, I'm guessing my match of Soviet Union 1941 is lighting up the reload tree. My opponent hasn't mentioned it though (not pvthudson).

Anyway, I'm not sure what does and does not cause the reload message to appear. In one PBEM I saw the reload message almost every turn. I really doubt they were cheating. I'm pretty sure they were saving the turn and then going back to it later.

Chuck, are you swapping out the non-public beta executable, when you play non-beta tester opponents? We may be getting false positives from having two different executables being tracked.

I'm running the 3.0.0.17 and EDITED is running the public beta patch and I've seen the "you're probably using different versions" message several times and I've seen the "your opponent reloaded 2 times" but I always thought it was because of the different versions we're using. You're saying I might be right? EDITED doesn't have any reason to cheat, he's winning, and I don't suspect him of it, BTW.

Do you get the reload message each turn or only on occasion? I suspect if it where a version issue it would be every turn.

We're on game turn 7 already and I don't really remember getting it EVERY turn but I may have. Sorry. And thanks for editing out the name of what's his face. How come I didn't think of that. Sorry again. "Mud" is my middle name here I guess. I'll try not to do that again. I felt kind of funny putting a real name in there but ignored it....I guess I should pay attention to those feelings in the future.

Hey guys, Well I've been playing EDITED for the last week or so and have seen the "may have reloaded" message 3 or 4 times and had to reload myself once due to a freeze up, no big deal, neither of us would cheat. However I think we're all missing the obvious here. The culprit is Elmer! Elmer knows that when the pbem thingy catches on more and more he'll eventually be redundant and deactivated. He's trying to make us turn against each other with unfounded suspicions of cheating. Didn't you guys see 2001 Space Oddysey?!!! Elmer and HAL must be cousins. I'd say now is the time for decisive action but that's just one man's opinion. BUT if you don't act and you all start to end up like those guys on that spaceship don't come asking Okimaw "What do we do now?", you'll be on your own [:-]

I think you are onto something there! TOAW III installations have achieved a critical mass where the AI (PO) has achieved sentience! We are doomed! What have we unleashed upon an unsuspecting world?

I thought you would have reload warnings for reloading a PBL already opened, not for reloading a previous .SAL file. Sorry if I appear dense but I'd like to be sure: what if (like I usually do) you always overwrite the same .SAL file during a turn? Load a .PBL, play a little, save as turn01.sal, then come back a bit later, open turn01.sal, play a little, overwrite turn01.sal ad lib until I'm done and save the end turn as .PBL to send to my opponent. Will this trigger a reload warning?

No. It would not. That is a perfectly legitimate and reasonable thing to do.

Program crashes, reloading a .sal other then the one that you just saved, loading a pbl multiple times before sending it. All these types of things will trigger the reload warning.

If you see a reload message on every turn, your opponent is doing something strange. I wouldn't call it cheating, he may not be aware that he has to save to exit, or it could be something else.

If you see an occasional message, he may have had a program crash, or it could be something else like that.

It also could be that they're using the program in ways I didn't anticipate. The anti-cheat logic is the most complicated of the new features, believe it or not, and it was the most troublesome to get right and to test, since I couldn't easily test it on one machine.

As long as you reload the game you saved, the message shouldn't be generated, that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

You can overwrite the existing file, with no problems, or cheat warnings, and since this will "clear" any previously existing saved files for the game that you are playing is the safest thing to do, in order to not generate the reload messages. See Ralph's clarification to Nemo69.

What my example showed is that if you reload an earlier save from a series of saves, then you will generate a reload message that your opponent will see. If you have the program crash on you while playing, the reload message to your opponent will be for a "legitimate" reason, since you will have to load a saved game that you did play on from. However, players should notify their opponents when this happens, just like they should for use of the undo button, so that their opponent is aware of the situation.

TOAW III forces you to save the game, when you leave a PBEM game. It still saves as a .SAL file, but you can't exit the PBEM without saving, unless it has crashed.
