Game won't work

Post by SMK-at-work »

I've posted several times here with no reply. I did get a private message saying I should check my drivers - my drivers are the latest available.

I tried the beta patch - no change.

I can't get a refund.

I'm a bit pissed off![:@][:@]

Sorry if you already wrote this somewhere, but what are your system specs?

Win 98 SE, 512Mb, P4 2.8, ATI 9200SE with 128Mb.

Symptoms are the game will either freeze the coimputer solid or shut it down to "black screen" some time before the 1st turn is finished - some timeswhile actually in hte turn, most often immediately after the supply determination phase.

In hte 1 PBEM I tried it allowed me to look around a bit, move a couple of units, then crashed.

Often playing "Annonymous heroes" it crashes right after the first P0 turn.  Most evenings I give up after 3-4 attempts (efinition of stupidity - well I seem to fit it!!).  Usually if it runs then it works on the first try - only 2 or 3 evenings in the last 2 weeks has it doen this.  Once it crashed as described when I finished 1 game and tried to start another.

No error messages - just a solid lock with the graphics still up, or crash to black - either way I have to hard reset.

TAOW II used to run fine on this computer.

I'm running on about 1/2 the system requirements (windows 2000 os, 333mz, 400mb free mem, 64 mb ram) and it runs ok, have to turn the sound off amd Fite is out of the question but I can play a lot of the larger scenarios. I might advise to turn of movies and sitreps if your memory is limited.
Edit I now find that the game freezes during the PO turn. PBEM seems to work fine. This machine is going in for an overhaul on Monday, that should stop that problem for me.
I have returned

I've seen some screen freezes but not nearly as much as this. Be sure to turn off sounds, music, and video. Don't do movies or log files. Check how much free RAM you have before TOAW 3 is started. TOAW 3 needs more RAM than earlier versions. Update to latest DirectX files. Keep your system cool.

I don't run the movies or logs, mave DirectX 9.0c, it's winter here and the computer is freezing! :)

How do I check free memory?  It doesn't seem to matter if it's a small or large scenario.

Please attach a DirectX dialog file to a reply here.

Your situation sounds very similiar to what is going on with mine. Lock ups during the game. Mine are mostly when I end the turn and the computor starts to resolve the conflicts but I've had it do it when I click on a unit or even just scroll around the map. I have tried everything that was suggested in this forum and nothing has helped. Its getting very frustrating.

BTW - I'm serious about keeping the system cool. I've seen some computers perform dramatically better just by having a 5-minute quickie with a compressed air bottle...

Blowing the dust off can definitely help with the cooling. TOAW is a very cpu intensive game during the end of turn processing, and it may be a case of overheating.
