Britsh Armour too Hard to Defeat????

Post by k_waterman »

In Operation Crusader, as the Germans, I get crushed by the Allied PO.

The Britsh Armour units seem to be extremely difficult to defeat. Seems like they replace their losses faster than I kill them. I tend to use Panzers and AT units in my attacks on pure Britsh armour regiments(battalions). During the war, the Germans employed their AT units as their main anti-armour, something doesn't seem right.

What I'm I doing wrong?

thx,
Ken

The Allies have a number of advantages in this scenario. Higher unit supply and readiness, better and more tanks, and more airpower. Most of the Axis AT guns in the scenario are Italian 47mm guns. The Allies have a number of tanks that have armor ratings of 5 or 6, which should give any of the Axis AT guns trouble. Except the 88mm dual purpose guns.

Some pointers. AT guns work a lot better when they are attacked. Attacking with them can yield poor results. So try to position the AT guns someplace where you think the British tanks will likely attack.

Use the flak units with 88mm guns as AT units. These are by far your best AT guns.

Try to force the British tanks to attack you from out of terrain such as hills or cities. This will lead to more tanks destroyed over them attacking from a sandy hex.

AFAIK, technically British 41 and 42 tanks were not exactly "superior" to germans ones. In fact only the Matilda 2 really was, the others were rather inferior, and with inferior tactics also. In 41 the 88 and PzIIIJ's ruled the battlefield...
In the game I was also surprised that Germans PzIII's were rather powerless against most brit tanks, I suppose their def is a tad too high.

There are only 31 88s in the scenario. You can't "rule" the entire desert with only 31 of them. However, the Axis does have 431 47mm AT guns in the scenario. [:D]

Maybe you are attacking them too soon or too often? It was a major British offensive. So you might have to grind him down and look for small opportunities to begin with.

Yes, I was talking globally of 41 and 42, if you read me well. Anyway in 41 PzIIIHs and 50 mm PaK38s were a match for Valentines and Crusaders. In the game they have difficulty scoring kills...Maybe I didn't try enough... [;)]
