RE: Raid on Sarmi

Post by Andy Mac »

Phase 1 of my preparation for the Marianas

Planning on 9 Fleet Carriers (Lexington, Yorktown, Enterprise, Franklin, Intrepid, Bunker Hill, Essex, Bennington, Ticonderoga), 8 Light Carriers (San Jacinto, Bataan, Langley, Cabot, Monterey, Cowpens, Belleau Wood, Princeton) and 17 CVE's with an additional 6 CVR's

Now initial thoughts

TF 1 Lexington, Yorktown, San Jacinto
TF 2 Enterprise, Franklin, Bataan
TF 3 Intrepid, Bunker Hill, Langley
TF 4 Essex, Bennington, Cabot
TF 5 Ticonderoga, Monterey, Cowpens, Belleau Wood, Princeton

TF 6 1xCVE, 3xCVR
TF 7 1xCVE, 3xCVR

TF 8 5xCVE
TF 9 5xCVE
TF 10 5xCVE

That will leave Hornet, Wasp and Formidable plus 5 CVE's in SWPAC to support mopping up.

p.s. namlea invasion force is loading I am concentrating on this op as Amboina is less important if I can get a chan of AF's from Darwin/kai/namlea/Wasile that will place the SRA at my mercy !!!

RE: Raid on Sarmi

OK guys I have a nother of those cunning plans that never really work as intended......

Objective

I want to drag any 1st rate fighter units out of the Marianas

Means

Transfer 2 of my B29 Gps to Wasile when it hits lvl 5 (B29's will operate with reduced load from lvl 5 AF)

Begin LR Bombing campaign target list.....Manila Harbour, Oil Centres, Repair Yards, AF's on bases that I could be hitting if I were bypassing basically anything remotely strategic within 1500 mile radius of Wasile !!!!

My view is he can hurt me if he gets tonies tojos etc in the right place at the right time but it will definitely spread him out and take focus away from Marianas.

Any thoughts ?

OK toops are moving out as the great redeployment begins

I have decided that Amboina is just not worth the giref so after namlea Hydra will officially be over and the mopping up can begin while the focus shifts to Centpac for Thunderchild

Next 4 days are quiet my forces inch towards Namlea.

I am not going to post the CR's as their is little point.

Landings should start next day I am trying this one on the cheap.,

I notice lots of Aux at Kendari any bets PZB is trying the firebrigade trick again.

Well I know how to stop it I have ordered a heavy raid on Kendari AF. B24J's and P38's out of Wasile

This tactic is getting a little predictable

Hm, i've been thinking over the past few days. The B29 trick would be quite good imho. I'd also try to push slowly towards Bali->Java area.

Perhaps conditions can be created so that when the Thunderchild operation is a success, a swift invasion of Java could be launched? If Java is taken then there is a possibility of attacking India in '45. Do you get enough ground troops in the next 6 months to achieve that?

Only if he sucks out troops from India he will have 2 Divs in each of karachi and Bombay add in lvl 9 forts and the urban bonus 100% prep etc etc and it would be very very tough to take one of the cities.

I am not sure it will ever be possible.,

One thing I am noticing is that my RN Ships have stopped advancing so I will never get the RN Carrier Force or modern BB's

Interesting. Still it would be worthwile to open up an OPPORTUNITY for the invasion of india. I'm sure PzB would be mindful of that too.

I agree I am moving the 1st Bde of the 11th Airborne Div to Wasile now with the other 3 Bdes to follow from there allied with my B29 raids and the mass of FB's basically everything that cannot reach the Mariansa from Entiwock I am hoping to cause mayhem just at the point when my forces hit the Marianas

Hm, are suicide recon squads still allowed in your game? If they are, perhaps another RCT will bite the dust whilst reccing every last single one of his bases in DEI? [:D]

It would annoy him to no end i bet.

Operation Hydra brought to a successfull conclusion

Post by Andy Mac »

Well the title says it all Namlea fell to the first attack and General Lavaracks 1st Army has closed down Operation Hydra - as far as I am concenred its been a total success.

I will post some stats in a few days but the highlights are Aitape, Dagua, Sarmi, Wasile, Namlea and Noemfoor still to fall

6 Corps level Amphibious assaults and the defeat of the IJN Carrier Fleet.

My only dissapointment is that I let the cat out of the bag on Superfortresses by clicking all bombers when I actually wanted to rest them.

OK as the focus shifts East to THunderchild 1st Army will mop up and consolidate for a couple of months

Wasile will be built up, Noemfoor captured, seabeas base forces and supplies hauled to forward bases and perhaps Emirau and the Admiralties captured .

Quite a lot of re organisation to complete before 1st Army renews its offensive

Na I know I was using bare bones on this one as my main amphib assets are en route to the Marshalls

It was sufficient to be overkill had the original garrison been all I faced but he air transported in a lot of troops. (You do not want to be a Japanese Transport pilot in this war !!!)

I am dissapointed by my mistake with B29's I really wanted to wait until Wasile was lvl 5 or 6 before unleashing that little surprise but I hit the wrong button.

Out of 196 of them rested morale high and ready operating (for them) at close range only 80 launched (air HQ etc etc)

Thats about a 40% launch rate I am trying an effort strike against Brunei before PZB gets to re organise but I am not hopefull of a large launch.

I may end up with 50 ish over the target which is a 25% strike I knew I was going to operate from a sub par AF but lvl 4 is a little to low.

I really wish that little surprise had been kept until I was ready.

OK broken eggs etc etc I have decided to prioritese PZB's oil regions if I can eliminate Brunei, Tarakan and Balikapan then I can make the seas around Palembang infested with US subs and we will have a real Sub v ASW war on our hands !!!!

How many subs do you have?

Can you spare some to put a nice perimiter around his fleet bases and/or home islands?

Possibly although keeping them on station until Wasile is operational as a fuel stop is difficult

A few I lost a lot of damaged subs on the last offensive.

OK PZB raised overstacking with me and on checking I have been. (so has he by the way)

My AF's typically have 125 - 150% of their stated capacity although I usually only sorties 50 - 60% of those.

i.e. my Mediums and Lights rest 1 turn in 3 and my heavies typically 1 in 2 FB's get more abuse [:D][:D][:D]

I choose not to get to excited by this because I have so many aircrtaft now that I must overstack or else I cannot base them all.

Wasile was the worst 550 on a lvl 4 AF. In my defence 24 were float (which I dont count) and 200 were B29's which were not on operations until I messed up. So Iwas sortieing (incl CAP) 325 on a 200 capacity AF so about 160%

I am not apologising for this I choose to overstack I will pay the penalties (as the allies I dont really think you have a choice in 44 you just have sooo many aircraft)

Idaho gets hit by a torp but will live.

OK guys I need the pros and cons of hitting my targets in a different order

Possible targets of Centpac offensive

Iwo Jima
Bonin
Marcus
Wake
Tinian
Saipan
Guam
Pagan

OK at present Thunderchild envisages hitting Tinian then Saipan and Pagan then Marcu/Wake and last Iwo/Bonin

I have troops prepping for all the objectives just in case I decide to change (a spare Crops HQ and Inf units at Pearl are prepping for Bonins)

I am going to try and do my raid in force to pull his aircrafts teeth again as part of that exercise I will take a good long look at all off the islands.

I still feel Tinian is the best answer but I am willing to listen to counter arguments

Any thoughts ?

Boy, if he's moving troops around in barges - set your experienced 4Es on low-level naval search. You'll get a bunch of sinkings during the OP phase.

I've got a PBEM going as Japs in '44, and can't have a barge sneeze without getting clobbered by Liberators...

Marianna's aren't atolls, so as long as you hit the beach hard, at worst you park your units there and pound him into oblivion. Pick just one, and the rest will fall in due course. I believe Saipan has fixed fortifications with CD guns, so I'd save that one for last.
