Nomad(A) vs theelf(J) sen 160 CHS 2

Post by Nomad »

I see that Ian has his AAR going so I had better get moving.

This is a senario 160 test and/or game. If we run across any really bad OOB problems we might stop, but if we don't it will be a game to the finish. Senario 160 is for CHS using Andrew Browns fantastic extended map. The Soviet Navy is present from the start of the game. And then from ABs web page:

Experimental A2A variant: This variant has modified scenario data similar to that used in the "Nik Mod" by Nikademus, but with some additional changes. Specifically, the following data changes are applied:

The starting experience values of all Allied pilots has been decreased by 10%, except for USN pilots.
The starting experience values of all USN and Japanese pilots has been decreased by 5%.
The Zero bonus has been removed (this is compensated for by the larger reduction in Allied pilot experience).
The endurance values of all aircraft are increased by 50%.
The effect rating of all AA/DP weapons has been increased by 50%.
The accuracy ratings of all air-to-air weapons has been decreased by 50%.

The maximum speed value range has been compressed by halving the difference between actual aircraft max speed and a centre point of 350 MPH.

We have no or few house rules in place, mostly we have agreed that invasions should be completly supported with air power and surface fleets. Neither of us wants to game the game and take advantage of loopholes. It should be interesting. My main objective is to try to run the war the way I think the real Generals and Admirals would have given the situation. And I do want to both win and have fun, I just will not let winning override having fun and doing what I think is right. I have and will reserve the idea of Ian and I discussing any short comming the game provides. ie. house rules on the fly so to speak. More in a bit.

Look forward to the AAR Nomad. I need to take notes for my upcoming PBEM as Allies against TheElf.

The first turn has run and Ian did a PH attack. This is the BB/CA/CL/DD damage list for PH:

Image

BB Maryland and a PT sunk at PH.

A somewhat troubling thing, but Ian might have changed a number of things, is that I lost 164 aircraft to his 85. Less than 2:1. [8|]

He landed at a smaller number of bases than I expected. He landed forces at Midway(repulsed [:D] ), Guam, Legaspi, Viagan, Kota Bharu, Batan Island( he took it ). there are a number of TFs at Aparri. A number of his Nells and Bettys were on Naval Attack, CHS starts with a number of Allied ships around China, Hong Kong, PI, etc. A few of them got plastered [:(]. As per my ususal alowing the Japanese to have nearly total surprise on turn 1, I only redirected my CV tfs( toward Aukland ), and a couple of others, gave a orders to a few units in China.

I haven't seen any turns lately( for any game ) so I'll type some. I plan on fighting as hard as possible in the PI. I have sent all my subs out on sub ops. A group of 6 to around Formosa. A group of 6 outside of Saigon. A group of 6 around Davao. Six more to Legaspi and two North of Palau. I have sent PTs to Vigan and some from Hong Kong to Formosa [X(] ( could be a surprise for Ian ). All units in Mayalya will stand and fight, no evacuations. The Dutch have no where to retreat to, so they also fight and die. I may make some evacuations of either depleted units or some base forces when there are no aircraft for them to support. But, I may not, I will have to see what happens. I do wish they had come up with something other the limited PPs to move restricted units from a restriced base to another by air or sea. I would like to move some units to better positions but still remain in the same Command HQ area. Oh well, rant over.

The obvious priorities will be India, Australia, New Zealand, the Hawaiian Islands and the West Coast. The South Pacific HQ does not show up for a while ( 130 days in Aukland ). After I feel the above are secure, then I will look at puting forces at Pago Pago and Nouema. Suva has a small force that starts there, it will be the next island to be reinforced. One question is whether I should reinforce Ceylon? I would hate to have him launching aircraft from its two excellent airfields, but I also hate to lose troops there that I might need in India proper. Any ideas on that?

Report for 12/9/42:

The damn out of sync combat replay was in full force. Also, I have a TF I created in Aden last turn and sent to Calcutta. It is now three or four hexes south of Aden, stuck in the brown stuff.

None of my PT attacks did anything. [:@] This one was really frustrating( not sure where the replay went haywire ) when I viewed it the combat started at 2000 feet and the first message was "task forces break off" WHAT? [&:][:@]

There's 34 ships there, are PTs afraid of MSWs and PCs? [:(] Maybe the massed firepower of the APs scared them off?
Where in the heck are those "uber PTs" the JFBs talk about? I would like to buy a few.

I sent CA Houston into Legaspi, but she got sunk by a CL with 4 DDs. I tried.

Ian did not hit PH again, so no more ships will sink in the harbour. I still will not move any ships out for a few days or weeks.

I have decided to leave the oil and resource centers in the USA just repair. They were all set to repair yes, and I left them that way. I'll see if that is the right thing to do.

More shipping got hit around the PI, not much I can do. I have sent most of them in one ship TFs and scattered them. Some of them will get through. Queation: What about the dry dock at Manilla? Is it gamey to try and move it?

I am going to risk using force Z in Malaya. I sent it to Kuantan and will try to hit a TF unloading at Kota Bharu. I am trying to act as complacent as the real guys. Those damn Japs can't sink my BB. [;)][:D]

CL Boise will meet up with some Dutch CLs and DDs tomorrow. I need to see where they can operate if at all possible.

I have no idea what to do in China. The setup is so different. I am leaving most everything alone right now. I moved the AVG in to Chungking. I am moving the units north of Yenen to Lanchow.

Most everywhere else it is just wait and see what happens.

report for 12/10/42

Still have a combat replay sync problem. If it doesn't fix itself this turn, we will have to try the Pompack method.

Not much to report, the Japanese took Legaspi and Makin that turn. Nothing in either. I am a bit bummed with the sync problem. Plus, about all I can do right now is hold on for the ride. [:D]

I did send force A on a surface combat mission. I wonder if anything will happen? [:)]

Report for 12/12/42:

No bases were captured by the Japanese that turn

Some more ships were damaged and/or sunk around the PI.

It is a bit hard to do much in an AAR when you are starting out and playing the Allies. I have no
real successes to report and not too many failures either.

Ian does seem to be moving slowly, and carefully. I am taking another chance, Ian has been bombing Hong Kong with no fighter support, so I moved a Squadron of the AVG in to see what happens.

force Z has been sent to Batavia for the time being. No good targets have appeared and sitting at
Singapore is dangerous.

A problem and I need opinions( everyone has one or more )

Post by Nomad »

At the start I expected this game to be one that did not use loopholes and/or exploits. But Ian has done something
that I think is outside of that. This is what has transpired:

1. On 7 Dec 1941 KB made an attack on PH.
2. Then it appears that KB reired to the North-Northeast about 1000 miles.
3. After a couple of days KB then moved back to the PH area and attack some shipping there

First, is not a problem that he sank some valuable ships( all the really important ones respawn anyway )

Second, it is my opinion that only the first turn mechanics, which are wonky, let this manouver occur. I do not
believe that KB had the resources available to it to perform this manouver.

Am I wrong? Has Ian used a known faulty design decision to do something that the IJN was physically incapable of doing?

And please, do not go off on tangents about what might or might not happen in the future. I want to only discuss this aspect.

I dont think that there was a faulty design decision(except maybe reduce the amount of fuel that the TK TF is carrying) involved in this type of ploy but it is certainly something that could be discussed in the house rules.

My current opponent Tophat did the same thing to me....ie KB drifted slowly to the NW of Oahu stacked with the TKs while it refueled and then suddenly just disappeared out of PBY range. I got suspicious and sent single ship AK TFs and subs to the NE of Oahu and sure enough he started spotting them with his KB floatplanes. He kept the KB there for the entire month of December. I just had all my transport TFs hug the east edge of the map until they were south of the Hawaiian Islands and then move west towards Johnson Is. before moving north.

At least I sort of knew where KB was and it wasnt busy hurting me in the DEI or the south Pacific. Id much rather see this type of move than have KB hit Pearl for 3-4 days in a row sinking all the BBs and CAs.
