Quiet one going to try a cheap and nasty attack on the Admiralties.

My Paras are resting at Wasile I may consider an early attack backed by carpet bombing heavies

Operation Minotaur

Post by Andy Mac »

OK following on from Operation Hydra a new operation.

If I give PZB time to redeploy I will regret it so I am going to take afew risks attacking towards Borneo

Phase 1 is a Para assault on two lvl 1 bases that recon confirms are empty (I have 4 recon sqns at Wasile on the go now) 4th USMC Para will assault Makalele and 503rd Para Regt will assault Tomini. Both are lvl 1 AF's and Tomini has a garrison of c 1000 Makalele is empty if my recon is correct.

Given the resources I am transferring to the Marshalls anything I do will need to be on the cheap.

Andy

This 'son of Hydra' mini offensive breaks all my rules its going to be a FT and Para offensive and its only real objective is to secure real estate before PZB fully redeploys from Hydra as I need more bases to effectively employ my Ari Power.

It also hopefully distracts PZB from the Marshalls.

Be cautious, please. Don´t do risky attacks just for doing them.
- Are your convoy supply lines secure?
- Do you know where all his carriers are?
- Where are his subs?
Can you answer all this questions?
Would you be able to stop a raid of his remaining fleet? We all know he loves to do high risk operations.
May I propose to put some of your worn out heavies on naval search to make sure your back garden is a save place?
You are thinking too offensive imho, don´t let you fool by pzb. He has done it again and again and again.

Frank its a weird one.

My combat power is shifting East so there isnt that much left in the West ergo he cannot really hurt me there.

I have so much airpower that I cannotr effectively deploy it all.

Every frontline base is at or beyond capacity (Wasile has 350 a/c on a lvl 4 AF at present)

My Convoys are as secure as I am willing to make them I have a sub picket force and LR Search A/c covering NORPAC

The other gaps are not that far away from CV's and or heavy LBA. He can raid he can even irritate me but I doube he can launch a crippling blow.

Minotaur is being done on a shoe string by a few DD's, AK's and Paras. i.e. nothing that is not expendable.

I need real estate in the area to develop into lvl 3/4 AF's to allow my FB's and light bombers to operate freeing up the bigger fields for 4E. I have 4 recon sqns at wasile operating 24/7 to find targets.

My criteria are lvl 1 AF and less than 1,000 defenders in 1 unit. My Para Bde can overcome 1 construction unit in a day and that is important.

I am going to keep on going foreward as the way I view it I need to take these easy victories while I can.

Hydra broke through the crust of his defences and I think the speed of the advance has expesed his rear areas. I am now into unprepared territory. If I give PZB time he will pull men out of the forward bases and reinforce all of these small bases meaning I am back to Divisonal or Corps level assaults that I dont have the shipping for while I am hitting the Marianas

His Carriers are mostly in dry dock still he does get a few more before the year end but to be honest I doubt he will use them and if he does so be it. (All my heavies are permanently on 20% search)

What I am saying is I need to drive forward while I can, while its easy and while its low risk.

One other point Frank despite everything thats happened I am sure that PZB is expecting me in Centpac he knows my left right combo of old from the marshalls campaign so he must suspect I am moving back to Centpac as its been quiet for several months while Hydra was underway.

I am going to try and convice him I am hitting Iwo or the Marcus but in the end he knows I will strike in this part of the world.

He has lost sight of my modern carrier force and he knows (because I lied [:D][:D]) that I have 4 Essex class at Pearl (I have 2 with 2 more arriving in 8 days on West Coast which will escort 11th Airborne which also arrives in 8 days to Pearl whereafter some DE's will close escort it to NG)

As a result any carriers that he has back in action - even Japanese shipyards need time to repair the damage I delivered !!!!! (and lets not forget the real kicking I gave his A6M5 pool/pilots on Hydra) will be used as fleet in being threat. I cannot believe he would make the mistake of unfettering my hands as he did on Hydra by launching a nothing offensive and losing his carriers. They are a far bigger threat if he doesnt commit them than when he does.

Now a raid by some CVE's is a possibility although he wasted them trying to bait me at Wasile.

One other point is my intel tells me that he is actually quite weak ahead of me I am reconning 4 bases a day at the moment and I am NOT finding any massive troop concentrations or bases towards Java or up into Borneo.

I may have options to be really obnoxious here and move forward rapidly.

Eventually he will have to react and pull forces from the East.

I estimate 25 - 30 days before all ships will be in position to start loading for Thunderchild.

I may take one of the other Marshall bases to give me more places to base airpower. The allies have soo much airpower at this stage of the war it is annoying not to be able to use it all.

Andy

Minotaur is a an extended diversion/attrition battle remember the main focus is Thunderchild:The battle of Tinian !!!!!

It is clear to me you want to use your good situation now, but just imagine your amphibious corps have made their landings, your carriers are doing heavy cap duty and your supplies will be reduced to a mere rinse because PzB destroyed two of your supply convoys between the Westcoast and Pearl Harbour.
The US have lost lots of AKs yet. Do you have enough to transport all supplies you need for a long campaign? Just calculate the needs of your bombers.
Make your convoys save. I am quite cautious, I know, but I follow this AAR from the very beginning and I have a very high opinion of PzBs raids and his ability to see a chance and use it.
The destruction of 50AKs in a raid would slow down your offensive very much.

Ah k I understand the misunderstanding

Kwaj has 999,999 fuel and supplies
Etiwok has 500k of each and building
Tarawa has 250k of each
PH has 999,999 of each

Another 200 - 300k of each are in convoys en route beteen Pearl and Marshalls

Supplies will not be an issue for the CENTPAC offensive !!!

50 AK's would be an annoyance now and would only really impact SWPAC who would lose out in the priority shuffle.

It would have been critical for Hydra in SWPAC when I was scrabbling about for supplies but I have made sure that I have stockpiled massive quantaties ready for this offensive.

I have had 3 months since the invasion of Entiwock to get ready for this. I have been assiduously stockpiling for Thunderchild for months via small convoys.

I rarely have more than 2 or 3 AK's in harbour at San Fran they are all out hauling supplies.

I started with about 2 mill of each forward dumped for Hydra and by the end I was short of fuel and down to 500k in supplies.

Thunderchild should be less fuel and supply intensive because my whole force is hitting one objective more or less.

I view the PH reserve as my 'exploitation reserve' if he hasnt properly garrisoned.

p.s. I am well aware of the quality of PZB's raids if not always the sanity [:D][:D]

I am well covered against raids and most of my convoys are small.

My PB4Y's are on high search in the Aleutians and Pearl and I have a sub picket in the gap. My troop convoys all have aircover (next one is 11th Airborne) this is all standard practice

More likely is that he could raid between the Marshalls and Solomons or the Marshalls and the Pearl although this would be very high risk with my carriers not committed.

Both of these he has tried before.

But honestly I do not expect it he has to know my CENTPAC offensive is coming and he will not waste whatever carrier force he has managed to assemble until he knows where I am going. (By my estimate he could have 1 or 2 CV's available with the rest still in Drydock and the Unryus are months away I will have a total of about 50 carriers between Pearl and kwaj in 5 days he is not going to try this it would be insane even for him.

If anything I think he may react to Minotaur if he guesses (correctly) that I have only left Hornet,Wasp and Formidable plus a few CVE's to keep up this offensive he may try to pick them off if I stick my neck out to far.

That is a credible threat given my lack of bases in the area and the risks I will be taking but so be it !!!
